Cyran acquired the weapon as a bit of a "bonus" on his payment after completing a bounty for a Tapani Noble Family who sought the aid of Cyran to capture one of their own sons who had been dishonoring and tarnishing the reputation of the family as a "saber rake". Although a talented duelist with a lightfoil they were no match for Cyran's cunning tactics, which was just to shoot the uppity noblemen with a stun round from his blaster. They were no force adept so they failed to block the bounty hunter's shot. He was there for a job, not to get into some honor duel.
After capturing the saber rake and bringing him back to his noble house to be repirmanded. The Noble Family to send a message that their son that he was to no longer continue any more of their silly duels, they let Cyran take his lightfoil for himself. Initially the bounty hunter was hesitant to accept it, not wanting a weapon so closely associated with the Jedi or Sith. But the noble family insisted, and expressed that the modern traditions around lightfoils were largely devoid of jedi and sith influences. So Cyran accepted it as a bonus to his contract.
Although sleek, the weapon paled in comparison to the craftsmenship of the lightsabers made by Jedi and Sith. However, he didn't let that stop him from using and as a replacement for his Force Pike, which had been his primary melee weapon for a good while before hand. As it was much more portable and was a lot cooler in Cyran's eyes. The bounty hunter, along with the help of his astromech companion even added on some nice modifications to it. Cyran knew about the abilities of Force adepts to telekinetically throw and catch their lightsabers, giving them some range and a boomerang effect. But he wasn't force sensitive and thus couldn't accomplish such a feat normally. But he recalled a particular weapon used occasionally by Rodian bounty hunters and mercenaries call a Repulsor Throwing Razor. A thrown weapon that can have a fair amount of range and accuracy as well as return to it's owner. With this in mind Cyran modified the weapon's hilt to incorporate miniature repulsor engines and a homing beacon at the bottom of it's pommel. So that when being remotely summoned and guided back to to him the blade of the weapon with be pointing away from himself.
