“We found something, Sir. In that floating piece of junk.”

“What? Gold?...Silver age weapons?...Valuables?”

“Well…..no sir. We…we found...”

“What is it? Spit it out, private.”

“We found a Clone, sir.”

“....better get the Marshal on the comm. She’ll want to hear about this.”

  • Throughout the Clone Wars, CT-8429 served under General Shaal Abnir in the 32nd Scout Battalion. Commonly associating with his squadmates Exit, Lux, and Jaws, CT-8429 was known for being the most outspoken of the bunch. The earliest part of CT-8429’s career passed in unmarked exemplativity: several successes and losses were documented. However, it was the Battle of Taanab that stood out most prominently in CT-8429’s record.

During the defense of Tryd Base on Taanab, CT-8429’s squad was dispatched to report on the loss of communication with the base’s forward security grid. Unbeknownst to the troopers, the security grid had been sabotaged by enemy forces and was set to explode upon entry. The first trooper to enter the security grid was vaporized in the explosion, followed by CT-8429, who was thrown from the impact. CT-8429 woke up hours later in intense pain due to several shrapnel lesions, second and third-degree burns, dislocated clavicle/shoulder, and severe-profound hearing damage. While the Tryd Base’s medic was able to provide exemplary care for the lesions, burns, and skeletal damage, nothing could be done to repair the hearing loss without the help of specialized cybernetic implants.

Being declared unfit for duty, CT-8429 was ordered to return to Kamino to face “decommission.” In spite of this, CT-8429’s fellow squadmates Exit, Lux, and Jaws propositioned General Abnir a retraining period for their injured friend on the condition of the successful outcome of the battle. The general agreed to give it a shot, noting that a clone’s “propensity for adaptability in face of adversity is perhaps one of the greatest testaments to Kaminoan ingenuity yet.”

The Battle of Taanab was recorded as a success for the Republic. The 32nd Battalion remained on Taanab for nearly a month after to re-establish the army’s presence there. It was during this time that CT-8429, with the help of Exit, Lux, and Jaws, learned how to cope and regain independence despite the presence of his disability. As CT-8429 attempted to regulate his speech and modify his HUD to better translate captioning, most of the squad learned Galactic Sign Language (GSL) in order to more effectively communicate with each other. This actually led to the name “Silent Squad’ being given, as they became known for communicating in complete silence both on and off the battlefield with deadly precision.

CT-8429 was field tested by an approved officer and passed the trial to reinstate his fit for duty status before the battalion left Taanab. Though the rest of the war progressed unremarkably for the majority of the battalion, CT-8429’s disability left him with a very unique, albeit difficult, experience. No longer the loudmouth of the group, CT-8429 became acquainted with the art of listening to conversations rather than participating in them and would fade to the background of much of the banter that took place. His newfound antisocial habits permitted him to become more familiar with scouting and long-range marksmanship, both of which he excelled at.

An unintended consequence of the explosion blast (that left CT-8429 deaf) was the inability of inhibitor chip activation. Due to CT-8429’s inability to receive verbal orders, he was left unable to hear specific code word activation sequences for all contingency orders. While he remained unaware of the presence of the inhibitor chip, CT-8429 was the only trooper in his battalion who did not hear the Order 66 given, and thus was not affected to follow it.

Unfortunately for CT-8429, this meant he was left appalled at the actions of his comrades during Order 66 on the planet Kooriva. Unable to process what was happening, CT-8429 attempted to stop his squadmates and managed to incapacitate Exit and Lux. Being overrun by his own squad, CT-8429 fled the base with Jedi General Aloris Ode with whom he was stationed at the time. CT-8429 was able to discern from General Ode that something had happened to the rest of the clone troopers to make them target the Jedi. After a full night of planning, the Jedi and CT-8429 snuck back into the base to steal a ship. It was during this fight that General Ode was injured, and CT-8429 carried the unresponsive Jedi onto a ship and piloted off-world.

In the midst of the escape, the 32nd’s Venator Class Star Destroyer Invictus opened fire on the small craft, punching through the shields and damaging the hyperdrive just before CT-8429 and the Jedi were able to make it into hyperspace. While the ship’s hyperdrive did engage, the damage that occurred before the jump caused the ship to enter a hyperspace void. This void of distorted time and space consumed the ship, placing both CT-8429 and the Jedi into a deep hypersleep.

The time of their reappearance would not come until hundreds of years later, when the Dauntless carrier The Lionhearted was conducting weapons testing above the planet of Kooriva. While fluctuating their turbolaser battery frequencies, a rift in space was torn anew, and the ship containing CT-8429 floated back into real space, plunging him into a completely unknown and mysterious new galaxy. Jedi General Aloris Ode succumbed to the sustained injuries upon exiting hypersleep, leaving CT-8429 to adapt once again to a changed reality - but this time, alone.
