OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Name: Crucible Scale
  • Manufacturer: Akure Executive Interstellar (T6, Alchemy specialization)
  • Affiliation: Closed-Market (used by many individuals and corporations to make their own suits of armor; ask first)
  • Homeworld (optional): Fireworms are native to Eol Sha, but AEI has transplanted them to magma environments on more accessible worlds.

  • Production: Limited (only one small group of characters, i.e. small task force, not entire factions.)
  • Modularity: No
  • Material: Alchemized Eol Sha fireworm scales, alchemized tikulini leather
PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Silicate scale backed by leather
  • Weight: Average. Several forms of alchemical treatment tend to increase density, and leather and silicates are not especially light.
  • Resistances
Blasters and Plasma Weapons: High* (before shattering), Average (after shattering)

  • Kinetic: High (before shattering), Low (after shattering)

  • Lightsabers: High* (before shattering), Average (after shattering)

  • Heat: High* (before shattering), Low (after shattering)

  • Cold (e.g. CryoBan): Very Low

  • *Note: AEI sells a higher grade of Crucible Scale at times. Therefore, this material can be assumed to allow for Very High or Extreme resistance to blasters, lightsabers, and heat for Unique armor submissions.

Color: Red

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • High resistance to heat, plasma weapons, and lightsabers.
  • Unique effect on lightsabers.
  • Easy to shatter, especially in cold environments.
Strengths:
  • Excellent blaster/lightsaber resistance.
  • Can 'break' a lightsaber blade by compromising its containment field. The lightsaber blade will spin off temporary, partially-contained 'pieces' of itself in all directions, and the weapon will shut down until reactivated. (Canon fireworm property; see Primary Sources for quote.) AEI enhanced this ability and made it more reliable by incorporating a variant of the Force-crafting arts used in Sith 'bloodshine' lightsaber crystals.
  • Individual scales can be replaced easily outside of combat. Replacing them during combat would be cheap. Naturally, some Sith owners carry a few extra scales for just this purpose, assuming they get the chance.
Weaknesses:
  • Individual scales shatter on impact. A kick or a punch will crack a scale with relative ease.
  • A thin blade could slide up between the overlapping scales and only need to deal with the tikulini leather.
  • Eol Sha fireworms swim in magma. Their scales are not designed for subzero temperatures. CryoBan will make the scales shatter outright, and the armor is much easier to damage on, say, Hoth. Cryokinetic powers or plas-bonded ostrine weapons will work wonders.
DESCRIPTION
The Eol Sha fireworm is a fascinating critter, a stone-scaled dragon that lives in magma. Its silicate scales have unique properties, though they are vulnerable to impact. The first known Forcewielder to make lightsaber-resistant armor out of fireworm scales was the Nightsister-trained Dark Jedi La-Reia Beorht. Later, the alchemist Rave Merrill -- founder of AEI -- made several suits of armor after Beorht's pattern. That wasn't enough for the company that mass-produced terentatek and tikulini leather, though. By transplanting and cultivating fireworms on various worlds, AEI eventually built up enough livestock to harvest significant quantities of scales. They also consulted Velok the Younger, who had led the Sith Order's efforts to exploit fireworms as a natural resource.

AEI arranged the scales in easily-replaceable mounts on tikulini leather, whose proprietary alchemy ensured it retained the worm's lightsaber-resistant properties. Rather than market the resulting material in suits of armor, AEI advertised the material itself, for whatever use its clients preferred.
