However, back then the gear lacked the shield unit it has become equipped with in more recent times. Initially the armor was developed to better protect against ballistics and explosives the rebels liked to employ. Created with ballistic weave and plasteel to better resist blunt force and concussive trauma, the armor was meant to defend against . It also provided Royal Soldiers with the ability to keep in touch better than Rebels and operate at night. Yet even these advantages began to fall off later on in the war as the rebels fielded their own armor for some of their units as well, though they lacked the ability to mass produce it for all their troops like the Royalist Forces.
Nonetheless it became abundantly clear where the armor was lacking when the Royalists were dealt a harsh blow in the form of their Lord General at the time, Tiberius the Saint as he was called, was slain in battle and many of his forces were killed with little resistance. Their armor protected them shortly before they were gunned down, and the explosions that ripped Tiberius flagship apart also revealed weaknesses. The armor of the Royal Army was not as effective to energy based harm like the heat from close proximity explosions and blaster fire.
To remedy that flaw the High Command issued the development of a light shield unit that could be integrated into the armor. It would allow the Royal Soldiers wearing the armor to absorb several blaster shots before it failed, and mitigate the damage from being closer to explosions. While it was a bit more costly, it was considered worth the expenses to make their army more effective as their morale at the time needed a boost.
