OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: To create a pirate crew under Darth Bedlam's control
- Image Credit: Miguel Iglesias for character art, StarSector for emblem
- Role: Pirates under Dath Bedlam's employ acting as soldiers and agents
- Permissions: N/A
- Links: N/A
- Unit Name: Crimson Corsairs
- Affiliation: Darth Bedlam
- Classification: Marines & Ship Crew
- Description: The Crimson Corsairs are a mostly independent pirate gang who operate in the Outer Rim, terrorizing shipping lanes in their frigate; the "Bloodtaker". While they lack a standard uniform or gear they typically paint what salvaged equipment they have a dark red, and usually emblazon their equipment with the icon of their band, a styalized skull (pictured below).
COMBAT INFORMATION:
- Unit Size: Medium
- Unit Availability: Unique
- Unit Experience: Trained
- Equipment: The Crimson Corsairs lack any standard equipment, instead they rely on what ever equipment they can salvage, steal, or buy on the black market. Typically they are equipped with a body glove capable of surviving in the void of space, metal armor, a sealed helmet with rebreather or oxygen supply, and a blaster or slugthrower. Most carry some kind of backup melee weapon such as a knife or machette, or a more advanced weapon such as a vibro-axe if they favor close combat over ranged engagements.
Really the only thing they all truely share is their home and ship, a ZV Slythmonger Assault Frigate dubbed "Bloodtaker".
- Combat Function: Typically Crimson Corsairs attempt to board their prey, disabling enemy ships or locking them down with tractor beams before finding their way inside to dispatch the crew. They are skilled in boarding actions, especially so in anti-gravity which they hope to use to disorient their enemies by disabling a ship's on board gravity systems.
- Force Abilities (Force User Units Only): N/A
- Void Rats: The Crimson Corsairs spend most of their lives in space with a few having actually been born in the void. To this end they find the traversal of anti-gravity spaces to be trivial and are able to manuever in three dimensions easily.
- Boarding Actions: Years of boarding enemy vessels has instilled a level of skill and intuition into the Crimson Corsairs one would expect from trained marines. They're fierce in close quarters combat and have dispatched more than one corporate security force or diplomat's security.
- Disloyal: Whether they're under Darth Bedlam's employ or not the Crimson Corsairs are pirates through and through. They'd be more than happy to give up what ever information they have to save their skins or even cooperate with enemy forces if it meant a payday. To this end Darth Bedlam rarely tells members of the Crimson Corsairs greater details beyond 'attack this ship' or 'look for X colored box'.
- Agoraphobic: A life in space has shaped their psychology to detest large open spaces or spaces without an easy means of escape or to hide. To this end they suffer while on the surface of planets or when operating small craft and instead prefer to stay within their frigate or occasionally take 'shore leave' on space stations.
The Outer Rim has always been a breeding ground for pirate gangs and the Crimson Corsairs are nothing special in that regard. Made up of corporate security deserters, soldiers of collapsed governments, mercenaries who decided to take a more ruthless path to earning credits, and those who joined out of bloodlust or desperation the Crimson Corsairs only remarkable trait is their success. Originally just a minor gang with the Black Sun the crew hit it big when they saw the writing on the wall that the Black Sun was beginning to crumble. Rather than wait for the inevitable and take a steady paycheck they helped the collapse on a little, stabbing their comrades in the back, securing weapons, gear, and armor, before grabbing everyone important they could and turning in the bounties, the credits from which they used to purchase the ship that would come to be known as "Bloodtaker". Since then the gang has grown in numbers, wealth, and skill through a darwinian process of constantly onboarding criminals. Those with the strength and skills have stayed around longer, forming a core of officers who direct the Crimson Corsair's actions.
It is this inner circle that Darth Bedlam approached originally and the only ones who ever speak with the Sith. The rank and file of the Crimson Corsairs stay clear of their mysterious employer who continues to supply them with shipping routes and wealthy targets he wishes to see disappeared.
