Time was a flat circle. The last time Ace had done this, he'd arrived unannounced and furious, ready to rip someone's head off. Now wasn't much different.
The circumstances had changed, obviously. Except last time, he'd come concerned for Sibylla. This time, his anger was directed squarely at the man who owned the fucking place, and somehow, that felt a little more righteous.
Shiraya's Sanctuary replayed through his mind in broken pieces. Especially Lorn. He could still feel Lorn's rage, see him descending on Her, and could still remember closing the distance and catching Lorn's wrist before another blow landed.
Funny. Ace had managed to keep his own head when everyone else's seemed to be falling off. He'd stayed focused because someone had to. Whatever else happened, whatever grievances waited until afterward, they needed to finish the mission and get the hell out.
Now the mission was finished and Ace was fucking furious. Because however many individual choices had been made inside Shiraya's Sanctuary, however much blame belonged to Lorn, Her, himself, or anyone else who had walked into that courtyard, Ace could trace the reason they'd been there at all back to one conversation.
Aurelian Veruna had found D'Qar and then he'd put it over their heads. That violation of agency alone would have been enough to drive him up the fucking wall. Everything that followed? Ala and Colette getting hurt. Lorn nearly losing himself. Freeing Her.
No. Veruna didn't get to sit comfortably in his ivory tower while everyone else dealt with the consequences of his decisions.
So while Lorn and the others made their way back toward D'Qar, Ace made what he would later, perhaps generously, describe as an impulsive decision. He stayed on Naboo, and Parrlay appeared beneath him in a blur as the small vessel screamed through the atmosphere. Technically, the ship wasn't his. Commandeer was probably the polite word for what he'd done.
The vessel came down hard enough to make the landing gear shriek against the pad before the ship finally lurched to a stop several meters beyond where any remotely sane pilot would've put it.
Ace was already climbing out before the canopy had fully opened. Royal security poured onto the landing pad ahead of him, weapons already raised. Someone shouted an order for him to stop. Another demanded that he place his hands where they could see them.
Ace's left hand twitched and every weapon left its owner's grasp at once. Blaster rifles and pistols ripped upward as startled hands closed around empty air. Ace flicked his fingers apart without breaking stride and the weapons dismantled themselves. Screws, plates, triggers and circuitry suspended briefly in the air before raining harmlessly across the landing pad.
Apparently, that wasn't enough. Several guards reached for secondary weapons. Others simply moved to intercept him physically.
The Force erupted outward and a repulse burst from Ace in every direction, throwing bodies backward and clearing the path ahead of him as Ace continued forward without so much as slowing.
His pulse thundered in his ears as the estate rose ahead. Ace had just walked out of a courtyard that resembled a small warzone, and here everything was immaculate. Peaceful. Sunlight washed over grounds like nothing terrible had happened anywhere in the galaxy. Like the man living here hadn't sent others to do his dirty work.
Ace could feel the anger building with every step. He'd spent enough time drowning in the dark side to recognize the sensation creeping beneath his skin. That seductive clarity. He knew he should have stopped, but somewhere beneath his own thoughts something whispered.
He's a threat.
Threats need to be removed.
You've killed for less.
He knew where this went, but the thought wasn't some spirit whispering into his ear. It was him. That was what made it worse. It didn't need to invent anything, just take what was already there and give it permission.
Veruna had threatened D'Qar. Lorn. Everyone who followed him there, who trusted that patch of jungle to keep them hidden. Safe. And he'd done it because he knew they couldn't afford to call his bluff.
Make sure he never abuses his power again.
For one ugly moment, Ace imagined doing exactly that. Wrapping the Force around Veruna's throat and squeezing until all that royal authority, all that confidence, all that fucking arrogance meant absolutely nothing.
Ace swallowed hard. No, he wasn't here to kill Aurelian. Ace reached the approach to the estate, dark eyes fixed ahead as his presence burned through the Force like a warning flare. He doubted he'd need to knock. The King would know he was here soon enough.

Steel clashed against steel in the center of the War Cloister, the ring of metal echoing off stone statues of disgraced and reinvented ancestors. Sweating beneath the Naboo sun, Aurelian shifted his footwork to meet the sudden flurry from his opponent. He possessed proper aristocratic and military training, yet Adelle fought like a true Mandalorian. Pride never blinded him to that truth. Learning from her was a breath of fresh air compared to courtly guards who held back out of fear for his royal position.

Adelle caught his blade with a sharp turn of her wrist, parried the blow wide, and drove her boot straight into his abdomen.

The force of the strike knocked the air from his lungs. Aurelian stumbled back, heels scraping the stone floor before he caught his balance and wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead.

"Is that the best you can do?" he asked, flashing a reckless, teasing smile. "I thought Mandalorians hit harder than that."

Before she could answer, a piercing security alarm shattered the quiet afternoon. A nearby protocol droid hummed to life, projecting a holographic feed into the air between them. The blue light flickered, displaying Ace tearing through the landing pad. Weapons were disarming themselves in midair, guards were flying, and the intruder was marching straight toward the estate.

Aurelian stood straight up, rolling his shoulders with a heavy sigh. "Not again."

"Just ignore him, he will tire himself out trying to find me,"
Aurelian murmured, barely glancing at the screen as he raised his sword back into a guard position. "He's harmless. Come on, go again."

Partway through the spar, Adelle felt a distant storm in the Force. If it had been a physical storm, she could have watched the thunderhead roll in, dark clouds roiling across the sky while the rain swept over the land like a curtain. She caught Aurelian’s blade with her beskad and turned it aside, before landing a solid kick to his gut.

"Is that the best you can do?" he asked, flashing a reckless, teasing smile. "I thought Mandalorians hit harder than that."

Aurelian, all grins and bravado, of course took a crack at her. Adelle opened her mouth to tell him about the thunderhead advancing on the estate, but a sharp alarm made her grind teeth. Adelle watched the security feed projected from a protocol droid, focused on the individual marching through trained security like it was nothing. He strode purposefully into the estate, as if it belonged to him.

As if he’d been there before.

"Not again."

Adelle raised her eyebrows at Aurelian in a silent question but he was already moving past, brushing the security matter aside like it was nothing more than an unwanted solicitor.

“You realize there are ways to push beyond physical limits with the Force, yes?” she asked, only a little amused by his nonchalance. Leave it to Aurelian to treat an invading Force user as ‘harmless.’ “I don’t think he’ll stop anytime soon.”

Still, if Aurelian wanted to continue the match, she needed the training. More than that, she needed to test this beskad. It had been newly forged, following Warpriest Prime Warpriest Prime 's instructions for putting her soul into it. Her first had broken suddenly in the Verd’goten. If it was a skill issue, Adelle had to know.

She didn’t want to contemplate the other option.

“But if you’re sure.” Adelle charged at Aurelian fast, feinting at his shoulder but driving at his leg. All the while she kept tabs on the oncoming storm in the Force.

He'd half expected Aurelian to come out and meet him. That was what had happened the last time he'd stormed the estate looking for answers. By now, there was no chance the King hadn't been informed of his arrival. Yet no one came.

Whatever.

Ace reached the estate's main entrance without slowing. He lifted his prosthetic hand, fingers curling toward his palm, and the doors blasted inward beneath a violent shove of telekinetic force.

He stepped through the opening and more guards were waiting inside. Ace barely gave them the opportunity to issue whatever warning they'd been preparing. The first guard was ripped sideways before he could properly raise his weapon, thrown hard enough to send him sprawling across the polished floor.

Another rushed him from the opposite side. Ace twisted, caught him with a sharp telekinetic shove to the chest, and sent him crashing backward into one of his comrades.

A third managed to get closer, but Ace caught him without touching him. The guard's feet left the floor as invisible pressure seized him around the torso and slammed him against the wall. Ace held him there, suspended several inches above the ground, while the remaining security personnel wisely reconsidered their approach.

"Where?"

It didn't take much pressure. Apparently, getting thrown around by an increasingly pissed off Force-sensitive had done wonders for the man's willingness to cooperate. The guard told him Aurelian was at the War Cloister and, more importantly, how to get there.

Ace released him and the man dropped unceremoniously to the floor. Then Ace turned and continued on.

The directions eventually carried him back outside, through the sprawling grounds of Aurelian's estate. Naboo's afternoon sun hung brightly overhead, warm light spilling across carefully maintained paths and gardens that seemed offensively peaceful compared to the mood Ace was dragging through them.

The further he walked, the more distant the commotion behind him became. Security alarms still echoed faintly through the estate, but Ace paid them little attention. His focus had narrowed onto a single point ahead.

He could hear the clash of metal before he reached it. Ace rounded the final approach and found another set of doors standing between himself and Aurelian. He didn't bother opening these either and both doors exploded inward beneath another telekinetic blast.

Ace stepped into the doorway and there he was, and he wasn't alone. Ace's gaze briefly shifted toward the woman accompanying him. Mandalorian, judging from the armor and weaponry. More than that, there was something familiar about her. He'd seen her somewhere before, though where exactly refused to surface through the anger currently boiling inside his skull.

Didn't matter either. He wasn't here for her.

His eyes snapped back toward Aurelian. "Veruna."

Ace started across the cloister, cracking his knuckles.

"You fucking scruffy looking nerfherder!"

Their weapons met again as Adelle drove low toward his leg, her feint forcing Aurelian to pivot back. He deflected the edge of her beskad with a sharp downward sweep, his pulse drumming from the exertion.

"I don't expect him to stop, but best to let that Sith rage fizzle a bit," Aurelian said, pressing forward into a quick thrust. "Besides, it is good practice for my guard. Let us see who really will put their life on the line and who will be fired."

He flicked his gaze toward the protocol droid's feed between strikes, watching the sheer chaos unfolding through the corridors. Ace was tearing through security with predictable theatricality. Adelle pressed the offensive, forcing Aurelian to step light, trade two fast blows, and sidestep a sharp horizontal slice. Sweat stung his eyes, his lungs burning with exertion as he threw a counter to keep her distance.

The heavy stone doors of the cloister exploded inward with a deafening crack. Debris rained onto the courtyard, dust swirling in the bright afternoon sunlight. Aurelian froze mid-strike, blade poised in the air. He wiped a shoulder across his damp forehead, chest heaving as he turned to face the entrance.

Ace stood in the broken threshold, fuming and yelling profanities across the stone floor.

A slow smile broke across Aurelian's face. "Scruffy nerfherder? Have some manners, Sith."

Standing up straight, Aurelian lowered his weapon, offered the hilt to Adelle without looking away, and smoothed the front of his tunic. He rolled his shoulders, completely unbothered by the sudden property damage.

"Sibylla is not here, Moonbound," Aurelian said, deliberate and mocking, knowing full well the man had not come for her.

Glancing sideways at the Mandalorian beside him, Aurelian gestured toward the intruder with a wave of his hand. "Have you met your boss's misguided younger brother yet?"

Adelle frowned at the casual disrespect for the beings that he employed for supposedly his own safety and security. The Dark Side felt restrained for now but that could change at any moment and unless he had secret Force Users among his guards, they would be at a severe disadvantage. Hells, they were at a severe disadvantage without the Dark Side.

She kept her eyes and focus on the king’s movements, but from what she could hear of the protocol droid’s projection, it was predictably not going well for Aurelian’s security. They could benefit from Mandalorian Anti-Force User training. In spite of his carefree comments, Aurelian’s gaze kept slipping to the projection. Adelle pushed forward, swinging her beskad and forcing Aurelian to refocus and adapt.

Adelle felt the echo of a burst of power and pivoted suddenly to face the doors, raising a barrier between them and the angry Force User—Sith, Aurelian had called him, although Adelle wasn’t wholly certain.

The doors burst inward and clattered off the barrier she’d made. She dismissed it just as quickly, watching the exchange. While the young man that had entered seemed determined to thrash Aurelian, the king looked like he was greeting just another of his constituents, even going so far as to hand off his sword to her and straightening his clothes. Adelle stifled an eyeroll and sheathed her beskad.

“Officially? Once,” she said. The banquet on Voss with the mystics and Sith delegation came to mind. Aurelian’s mockery about his looking for Sibylla had triggered the memory of Quinn’s coronation on Eshan and a whispered conversation that Adelle had pretended not to notice.

That Acier walked freely enough to trespass on the king’s home made her question a lot. Last she had known, Sibylla had mentioned he’d surrendered himself to High Republic custody. Clearly, the Jedi hadn’t leveraged their position to take him in, and Adelle would’ve read a report somewhere about Acier’s diplomatic immunity status since she hadn’t heard anything more from Sibylla.

So, aside from wanting to pummel Aurelian into a pulp, what was he doing here?

“No killing,” Adelle said, stepping away to put the king’s sword down someplace safe. “But if you’re going to fight, knock yourselves out.”

Preferably literally. Then maybe reason and sense could govern two supposedly grown adults.

Sith. The word bit harder than Ace would've liked. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, but otherwise he gave Aurelian nothing. He'd learned by now that there wasn't much point. Aurelian Veruna had always seemed most comfortable when the galaxy could be divided neatly into categories. Jedi. Sith. Republic. Enemy. Ace had never fit particularly well into any of them.

Then came Sibylla. That didn't give him pause either. If anything, it only encouraged him.

"Good." Ace's voice dropped, cold anger threading through every syllable. "Then she won't have to see what I'm about to do to you."

His gaze shifted briefly toward the Mandalorian standing beside the King. So she was definitely one of Aether's. That explained part of the familiarity, at least. She'd said they'd met once. Officially. Ace studied her for another second, trying to drag the memory into focus. Something was there, buried beneath everything currently occupying his thoughts, but he still couldn't place her.

Ace's attention snapped back to Aurelian as he closed the remaining distance between them. There was no warning, shift of his shoulders, or dramatic winding back of his arm. Nothing telegraphed what was coming until Ace's left fist was already moving.

The cross shot straight toward Aurelian's pristine jaw. And Ace had very deliberately chosen the left. Beneath the fully fingered glove wrapped around his hand wasn't flesh and bone, but beskar-plated metal.

Ace's organic hand shot forward, fingers bunching into the front of Aurelian's tunic as he seized him by the collar. He pulled him close, his other fist already drawn back and raised beside his head. For a moment, every part of him wanted to bring it down. Yet. Whatever satisfaction might have come from simply beating the King senseless, Ace needed him to understand first.

"The Grandmaster was injured because of her." His voice rose now, the restraint cracking just enough for the fury underneath to show. His grip tightened around Aurelian's collar. "Because of your fucking prisoner! Why?!"

That was what this was about. Not the guards outside, Aurelian calling him Sith, or whatever history existed between the two of them.

Her.

The woman Aurelian had forced the Vanguard to extract. The prisoner they'd been blackmailed into breaking out of Shiraya's Sanctuary. Everything that had followed from that decision.

Ace's nostrils flared as he drew a breath through them. His fist remained raised, poised there with the threat of another blow that still hadn't come.

Only then did he glance toward the Mandalorian again. Some of the hostility left his expression, not much, but enough to make the distinction obvious. She hadn't done anything to him. There was no reason to treat her like she had.

Ace gave her a small nod.

"Su'cuy." Better late than never. "And don't worry." His eyes slid straight back to Aurelian. "I'm not planning on killing this schutta."

Planning being the operative word.

His fist was still raised, and whether Aurelian wanted to talk or fight, Ace was ready for either. Preferred the latter, even.

Frankly, he expected both.

Aurelian had turned his head toward Adelle, intrigued that she and Acier had met before. That meant the former Sith had been lounging at home during his disgraced dark-side phase. He wondered what Aether made of that. Where Aether possessed absolute logic and immovable strength, Acier was a messy mixture of emotion and weakness. Aether was a commander, but Acier was just a reckless child throwing a tantrum.

Adelle stepped aside with a smirk, practically encouraging the violence. Aurelian started to turn back with a wry comment on his lips, but the strike was already moving.

Acier's beskar-plated fist smashed directly into Aurelian's face with a sickening crunch. Pain erupted across his features, driving his head backward. Before he could fall, fingers snagged the collar of his tunic, holding him upright.

Warm blood welled instantly from his broken nose, dripping down his lip and onto his immaculate silk tunic. Aurelian didn't flinch or fight the grip. He simply stared up at the raised fist, his face aching as he forced a wide, bloody smirk across his face.

"I do not recall any prisoner of mine," Aurelian said, his voice completely smooth despite the red stain spreading across his teeth. "No. That does not sound like me at all. Does it, Adelle?"

It hardly took any time for Acier to make Aurelian eat a fist. Adelle folded her arms across her chest, watching. A left cross, striking jaw and breaking the nose. The sound echoed in her ears. The Dark Jedi gripped the King’s collar and started demanding answers, fist poised to strike again.

The Grandmaster was injured because of her.

Jedi business? And someone Acier clearly cared about. Aurelian hated Jedi—really, all Force users—though, why would his name even be relevant in a conversation about Jedi?

"Su'cuy." Better late than never. "And don't worry." His eyes slid straight back to Aurelian. "I'm not planning on killing this schutta."

Adelle nodded in greeting, even though she raised her eyebrows slightly. Was now really the best time for hellos? There was, however, something more immediate that demanded her attention.

“‘Planning’ and ‘won’t’ are two very different words,” she said. ‘Planning’ invited the possibility, even if it happened accidentally. It allowed for justification. It lacked restraint. “No. Killing.”

And true to form, Aurelian smiled like a fething tooka that caught a duck at Acier.

"I do not recall any prisoner of mine," Aurelian said, his voice completely smooth despite the red stain spreading across his teeth. "No. That does not sound like me at all. Does it, Adelle?"

Sighing internally, Adelle pinched the bridge of her nose.

“I swear you enjoy making things harder on yourself,” she muttered under her breath. She looked Aurelian in the eyes, the copper tang of his blood filling the air. “Answer him or I’ll knock sense into both of your heads.”

Adelle could tolerate many things about Aurelian. She’d seen a few glimpses of who he was beneath all his defenses and armor. But his bantha osik wasn’t one of them.

Ace didn't acknowledge Adelle's correction. Not because he was being defiant, he just lacked the interest or desire to clarify what he'd meant. He hadn't come here planning to kill Aurelian. That was enough for him.

Besides, he was currently far more occupied with trying not to smile. Blood ran freely from Aurelian's broken nose, staining his lip and that immaculate fucking tunic of his. Stars knew how long Ace had wanted to do that. Longer than he'd ever admit aloud, probably.

And yet, despite all of it: bleeding, held by the collar, and another fist hovering dangerously close to knocking those perfect teeth out of his head, Aurelian was still smiling. Still posturing. As though somehow he remained the one in control.

Maybe he did. Because the moment Aurelian opened his mouth, Ace's expression twitched. He was the catalyst for this entire fucking mess and that was what he had to say? People had gotten hurt. The Vanguard had been compromised. Ala had been injured. And Aurelian wanted to stand there bleeding through his teeth and try to be funny?

"You arrogant son of a--"

Ace's fist drew farther back, his arm only stopped when Adelle spoke. Ace's eyes flicked toward her. Well. It was nice to know she wasn't some kind of lackey to Veruna.

Then again, why would she be? She was Mandalorian. One of Aether's Mandalorians, specifically. His brother's Empire. Ace didn't know her well enough to make any judgments about her personally, but he was certain of one thing: Aether wouldn't surround himself with warriors who weren't worth a damn.

His dark eyes returned to Aurelian. He elected to ignore the latter half of Adelle's warning entirely. She certainly could try.

For another moment, Ace simply stared at the King. Then the fist suspended beside his head slowly unclenched and his fingers loosened around Aurelian's collar next. Ace released him, giving the King's chest a light push with the tips of his fingers as he stepped back.

"Go on." His voice was quieter again, though none of the anger had left it. Ace's gaze remained fixed on Aurelian. "Tell her how you blackmailed us into breaking a Sith prisoner out of Shiraya's Sanctuary. Tell her how your actions led to Ala Quin getting hurt by the same prisoner you wanted out."

Aurelian flashed a brilliant, bloody smile toward Adelle. He knew he was full of nonsense and she knew it too, but poking at Acier's rage without giving him an inch was far too entertaining to stop. Acier thought coming here with a heavy fist made him dominant. The boy failed to see he remained a simple puppet, furious precisely because he was so easily maneuvered.

Stepping back as the grip released his collar, Aurelian smoothed his tunic and straightened his shoulders. He paid heed to Adelle's threat, having no desire to test her patience.

"Is that why you got that new hand of yours?" Aurelian asked, tilting his head toward the metal limb. "Needed to feel like a bigger man? Hit harder?"

Waving a dismissive hand before the boy could offer a angry rebuttal, Aurelian strolled toward a nearby side table to retrieve a linen cloth. He dabbed the crimson mess from his upper lip and nose, wincing slightly as the broken bone protested.

"Oh dear, Sibylla is not going to be happy with you," Aurelian murmured to Acier, tossing the red-stained rag onto a stone bench. Turning toward the Mandalorian, he added, "You see how he behaves? Such senseless anger."

Walking back into the center of the courtyard, he stopped a few paces from Acier with his hands casually resting behind his back.

"I do not blackmail anyone," Aurelian declared smoothly. "I merely offer suggestions. Whatever conclusions your team drew are entirely on you. You should have done a better job."

The clatter of boots echoed from the doorway as a dozen royal guards finally breached the threshold, heavy stun blasters trained directly on Acier's spine. Aurelian subtly held up a palm, signaling them to hold their fire for just a moment longer.

"Frankly, I do not see why you are so upset,"
Aurelian continued, his eyes glinting with arrogant amusement. "We both got what we wanted."
