Company & Workshop Overhaul 5.0

Welcome to Week 19 of Factory 5.0!
giphy.gif
Today we have an update for the Company & Workshop section of the Factory!

Those of you who play the "Company game" may have noticed we changed very little, if at all, during our transition from 4.0 to 5.0 early this year. However, that change is coming to you now with our Factory 5.0 Company & Workshop overhaul. With these changes we hope to make the use of companies and workshops more accessible and approachable for all members on the board, as well as integrate the codex into its use for those of us who enjoy both sections of Chaos.

Below is the new Factory 5.0 Company & Workshop tier progression system. Please feel free to post any questions regarding these changes here or in the Factory Q&A thread, or via PM.

Company Expansion and Growing in Tier
Company Index by Tier Level: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6
  • You may not advance more than one Tier in a single request. Threads already used for advancement from one tier to the next or made during a previous tier will not count towards a new tier advancement. If your expansion is one lengthy consistent thread, you must specifically provide the applicable unused posts that pertain to that tier up.
  • Each linked thread may only be used to fulfill one of the sub-requirements for each tier level. ( IE: No double-dipping the same thread to fulfill a major contract and a use of company operations.)
  • Every additional new Location & Operation or Headquarters change requested through the Company Modification Thread will require proof of expansion.
  • Each expansion in Tier level will require a company to display examples of company growth in influence and/or finances or territorial expansion, as well as usage of the company's operations.Territorial expansions used for tier promotion purposes may result in that new location being added to the company's location list if it is on a new planet. Location submissions in the codex may be used for this.
  • Use of a company's operations may vary from a thread in which a company's operation is utilized, or as a submission in the factory or codex in which one or more of the company's operations are used for its creation.
  • If company growth is done in the form of venturing into a new operation then that new operation will be added to the company's operation list.
  • Displays of company growth in influence or finances are any examples in which there are efforts to expand these two. Show that a company is putting an effort into growth and/or is putting its influence to work and it will benefit here from it!
[*]Each expansion to tier IV and up will require a Major Contract.
  • A major contract is any thread in which a major faction or tier V/VI company decides to align its interests, long-term, with your company specifically that greatly expands your company's influence and/or size & scope. Examples may vary from, but are not limited to: a contract or agreement to become the designated provider for one of your company's operations for a major faction or tier V/VI company, the completion of a large or ambitious project with a lasting impact on the growth of your company, and/or the long-term or permanent partnership between your company and the major faction or tier V/VI company in question.

Workshop Expansion and Growing in Tier

A Workshop is a small operation, comparable in size to a Tier One Company and follows the same production limitations. A Workshop’s growth in tier reflects increasing prestige and expertise in a specialized field.
  • Each expansion in tier will require personal commission threads or specialty products.A specialty product is any factory or codex submission which utilizes the workshop's specialty for production.
  • A Personal Commission thread involves providing your Workshop's specialty products or services to another PC or NPC used by another writer.
[*]Each expansion in tier from tier IV and up will require a Mastercraft Project thread.
  • A Mastercraft Project thread is an extensive and/or ambitious project that involves providing an especially innovative product or service, in keeping with your Workshop’s specialty, that is tailored personally for a PC or NPC used by another writer.

Have a question: would a personal commission, in the context of a service-oriented workshop (such as my very own Crown Nebula Hotel), simply be an IC thread where the workshop provides the service?

So production levels are no longer a factor for either companies or workshops? A company can tier up off uniques and a workshop can tier up off mass-produced items?

Yes. In such cases for service-based companies/workshops, reasonable accommodations will be made to give them a means to advance.

No. Workshops cannot mass-produce. Companies need to display growth. A Tier 4 company making a unique piece of technology in the form of a blaster pistol is not growth.

Where will those standards exist in writing, if not in the tier-up rules?

The rule regarding workshops has been in writing since their inception:

A Workshop is a small operation, comparable in size to a Tier One Company. A Workshop’s growth in tier reflects increasing prestige and expertise in a specialized field.

Company Tier Unlocks
Below are Tier Level Company unlocks

Tier 2
  • Able to Mass Produce submissions.
Edit:

To clarify, growth are RP threads utilizing your company in some manner:
  • Display two examples of company growth in influence and/or finances OR territorial expansion.
Display two uses of company operations.

This is the requirement for factory/codex submissions and may be any submission for which your company has operations for.

  • Use of a company's operations may vary from a thread in which a company's operation is utilized, or as a submission in the factory or codex in which one or more of the company's operations are used for its creation.
Basically, either write a thread utilizing your company and its associated operation (or expansion into such operation), or submit something to the factory or codex using that operation. All of those will qualify.

The new rules can be much, much clearer and more accessible on these points. Removing the rule and trusting that your average submitter will understand how separately and ambiguously stated rules fit together is a fast track to angry submitters who did things in good faith. I strongly recommend adding like three words so people actually know what standard's being used to judge them. That's not spelling out every little thing, it's giving fair notice of a basic rule. I'm not aiming to be critical here, but people need to know what standards will be used, and the new version makes them kind of opaque.

EDIT: Resolved in collab by PM. Rules good.

From tier 4 to tier 5:
- Sign a contract with three player run organizations, one of which must be a major faction OR tier V+ company.
- Complete a Major Contract.

If I complete a Major contract with a major faction, do I then need two more contracts (which are not Major, but can be with anyone, such as a major faction, but do not fulfill the "major" requirements or lasting impact on growth)?

[member="Pella Vun"]

Completing the major contract with a major faction would satisfy that requirement, however you would still need three contracts with player run organizations, including another major faction or a T5+ comapny.

So link a thread which involves your company doing business or a link a submission directly?

In my case selling starfighters, or a starfighter submission?
Sorry I didn't see this post. Yes. That would satisfy the company operations requirement :)

[member="Jamie Pyne"]

I noticed the verbiage of "new" contracts is no longer present. Are we able to make contracts with previous PC companies or major factions done in previous tiers?

IE, if we did one contract with a company at tier 4, and we made a new contract (new thread different contract criteria) with the same company in tier 5, is that allowed?

So now we have 12 (6 subs and either 6 threads or 6 codex subs or whatever mix in between) instead of the original 6 to go from T5 to T6? I only had two more threads/codex locations left and now I've got 6 to do? When does this go into effect?

[member="Jamie Pyne"] [member="Lily Kuhn"]

EDIT: The reason I ask is because I only had two left that could have been threads or codex subs to get into T6 or a mix and now I have 6 to complete before that's possible.
