OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Clubtail
  • Designation: Non-Sentient
  • Homeworld: New Plympto
  • Language: N/A
  • Average Lifespan: 35-40 Standard Years
  • Estimated Population: Planetary
  • Description: The clubtail a large saurian creature slightly taller than an average human at its tallest, with thick spiked armor covering its back and sides, as well as its namesake clubbed tail, which is a large and heavy structure made up of dense bone.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type I
  • Average height of adults: 2-2.5m
  • Average length of adults: 10.5m
  • Skin color: Dark Green, Varying Shades of Brown and Grey
  • Hair color: N/A
  • Distinctions: Clubtails are easy to spot thanks to their namesake clubbed tail, however they also possess large plated armor along their backs from the top of the skull to the tail, which is fused into their skeletal structure and segmented to allow for a lightened weight load and better overall protection. Their skin color varies, though is always in shades of dark green, brown, or grey. Females are almost indistinguishable from males.
Strengths
  • Armor: The Clubtail benefits heavily from segmented plates of osteodermal armor, providing excellent defense from physical attacks, predator claws and teeth, and limited protection from blasters as they act in a way that disperses the heat.
  • Club: Its namesake club is a deadly weapon turned loose against predators or other threats, with significant muscular structure leading along its tail to allow for the Clubtail to utilize powerful swings capable of outright killing average humans from the blunt force, or at the very least crushing bones to a severe degree.
  • Size: Clubtails are large creatures, and benefit from this size and weight primarily in that they are exceptionally difficult to push around.

Weaknesses
  • Eyes: While the top of the Clubtail’s eyes is protected by small outcroppings of its armor plating, the undersides are not, and are exceptionally vulnerable to attack.
  • Underside Protection: Similar to the above the Clubtail’s armor plating doesn’t cover its underside or legs, making them perfect targets for attack by predators or hunters. Flipping one over, while a difficult task, can be done, and is often the best method of execution, as it bares not only the belly, but the throat to attack.
  • Tail Range of Motion: The dorsal side of the tail contains some protection from the osteodermal armor, which in turn limits the range of motion afforded by the tail and by extension the club. It can be lowered enough to drag along the ground, but cannot raise up much more than half a meter above a straight-out position.

CULTURE
  • Diet: Herbivorous
  • Communication: Basic Vocalizations, Body Language
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: N/A

GENERAL BEHAVIOR

While not a very social species, the Clubtail is a creature that is almost always found traveling in a pair. These pairs are typically a mating male and female pair, as the species has been noted to mate for life, an interesting behavior as such pairs have been observed in the wild to go for up to five years between mating cycles. The offspring of these pairs will remain with the parents until they reach approximately three years of age, a time noted to be the minimum age for a Clubtail to reach sexual maturity, before leaving on their own to seek a mate and continue the process. This is one of the only times a Clubtail can be found alone in the wild, the other time being after its mate has died. In these cases widowed Clubtails have been observed to refuse to find another mate for the remainder of their lives, which can leave them in dangerous situations as covered below.

An interesting part of Clubtail behavior are their defensive practices. As herbivorous creatures they tend to avoid conflict with other species, fleeing when possible if a predator is sensed in the area. When cornered, however, the Clubtail is a dangerous enemy alone, utilizing its thick bone-formed club as a blunt instrument to deliver lethal force when pushed by a predator. Mating pairs however are a much bigger threat as they will work together to fight off predators, often providing enough of a fight to scare off Dryptodosaur packs. A specially noted tactic against enemies is to intentionally leave space between the two, allowing a predator to get between them, before side-stepping into each other, crushing the foe between armor plates and impaling them on the thick osteodermal spikes that often extend from the edges of their armor. When alone, however, the Clubtail loses this advantage, and is more likely to be surrounded and attacked from multiple angles, being easily overwhelmed by smaller, faster predators.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

One of the older recorded species on New Plympto, the Clubtail is one of the most well-documented on the planet, owing in part to its notable appearance and intriguing mating practices. Unrelated to the Nosaurian despite sharing status as a reptilian being, Clubtails have a long history of being observed in the wild thanks to their docile nature in response to other creatures sharing space. They were reintroduced to the planet along with a large majority of its previously native fauna after its reconstruction by the Vong, and have since returned to their place as a major part of the upland plains ecosystem, with some having even been found to make their way into mountainous terrain and forests, though rarely found along the coastlines of the planet.
