[SIZE=12pt]Balance note: To balance the design of this ship I used a point system. Armament, Defences, Manoeuvrability, and Speed were calculated from 1-8. 1 being None and 8 being Extreme. For Hyperdrive and Hangar my scale was 1-3. I then added the number of points for a ship where everything is average and got 23. Then I created my ship so that it had a total of 23 points.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=12pt]Tempest Class Research Frigate: With the increasing demands for resources across the galaxy, many Core World governments have put pressure on academic institutions to find suitable worlds for colonisation. This has triggered a wave of expansion, and created a new breed of explorer. The scientist. [/SIZE]
[SIZE=12pt] This wave of exploration required a new kind of starship. The current market of colony ships and military vessels was unsuited for the needs of the scientific community. They needed a specialised scientific craft. With government grant money, many academic institutions began to put out contracts for large research vessels. Arthur Maxwell, owner of the small Onyx Manufacturing company on Kuat won one such contract from a scientific group in Naboo. Over the next 5 years he and his small team created the first Tempest Class Research Frigate. A 200m ship perfectly suited to the new age of scientific exploration.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=12pt]The Cloudburst I: The Cloudburst I was the first Tempest Class ever built. It was a revolutionary ship, with a highly trained crew from 10 different groups across the galaxy. The ship’s first mission was to revisit the planet of Nycteria[/SIZE] (http://starwarsrp.net/topic/110975-dead-planet-contest-nycteria-the-whispering-planet/), a habitable world with good potential for resources. However, contact had been lost with Nycteria’s only settlement, The Nycteria Exploration base.
[SIZE=12pt] The goal of the mission was to find out what’d happened to the base, and reassess the suitability of the planet for habitation. To achieve this the Cloudburst was equipped with highly advanced bio-analysis and meteorological research labs, as well as an assortment of advanced scanners. A crew of 180 is stationed on board the 200m ship. 160 of which are permanent crew of the ship and 20 that are part of the surface team. The ship’s highly powerful engines, and high manoeuvrability make it very well suited to navigating unexplored sectors of the unknown regions, where hazards are not marked on maps or navigation computers. Because it is an exploration vessel, The Cloudburst I has a large supply of consumables, enough to feed the crew for 15 years. It has a cargo capacity of 500 metric tons (2 Boeing 777s,) most of this is food, water, and colony supplies, as well as mobile lab equipment.[/SIZE]
