GENERAL INFORMATION
Name: Cindergilt Tree
Origins: Native to the planet Vaal
Other Locations: Rarely transplanted offworld; survival outside Vaal is extremely low without replicating exact soil and climate conditions.
Classification: Tree
Average Growth Cycle: Seedlings germinate during the wet season and establish deep taproots within the first decade. The tree reaches maturity in 80–100 years and can live for several centuries.
Viability: Thrives in open savanna plains with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Requires full sunlight, mineral-rich soil, and a long dry period to develop its fire-resistant heartwood. Grows best near seasonal firebreaks and Bulwark Bloom clusters.
Description: A wide-canopied savanna tree with pale tan bark streaked by natural metallic-gold veining. Its fire-resistant heartwood and shimmering grain make it a valuable material for starship interiors, fortifications, and high-end furniture.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Average Height: 8–12 meters
Average Length: N/A
Color: Pale tan bark with gold streaks; deep green leaves in the wet season, dusty olive in the dry season.
Nutritional Value: Minimal, leaves provide sustenance to certain grazing fauna but have negligible nutritional value for sentient species.
Toxicity: Non-toxic. Inhalation of sawdust during processing can cause respiratory irritation.
Other Effects: Contains natural fire-retardant compounds in the heartwood and bark; these compounds can be extracted for use in industrial fireproofing.
Distinctions:
• Umbrella-like canopy adapted to maximize shade in open plains.
• Bark with metallic-gold mineral veining, caused by deep taproot mineral absorption.
• Exceptional fire resistance, surviving intense dry-season grassfires.
• Very slow growth rate, making mature trees rare and highly prized.
Strengths:
• Fire-resistant, durable wood suitable for military, industrial, and luxury applications.
• High economic value as a luxury export and rare building material.
Weaknesses:
• Very slow to mature; overharvesting can lead to long-term scarcity.
• Difficult to cultivate outside of Vaal due to strict environmental requirements.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Cindergilt Tree has been part of Vaal's ecosystem and culture for millennia. Its deep taproots draw minerals from the plains, giving its bark the distinctive golden veining that has made it a status symbol for both local clans and wealthy offworld buyers. Adapted to survive the planet's seasonal grassfires, the tree's fire-resistant heartwood became a metaphor for endurance in Vaalic folklore.
Clan chiefs traditionally held councils beneath mature Cindergilt Trees, and wood from a naturally fallen tree was reserved for chieftain's thrones, ceremonial weapons, and comissioned carvings. During the Old Republic era, traders brought the lumber to the wider galaxy, where its beauty and durability drew the attention of shipwrights, architects, and luxury craftsmen.
In modern times, demand for the tree's wood has surged. Empires and Republics alike have an understanding that if you want luxury, and protection, you have to use Cindergilt wood. The harvesting of more of the trees has lead to backlash from both the nomadic tribes and regular citizens alike. There are a lot of people advocating for the protection of the trees. It's a careful balance between economics and conservationism.
