STANDARD FEATURES

ADVANCED SYSTEMS

Strengths:
  • Heavy ordnance capacity
  • Strong defenses
  • Can resist ion/EMP attacks
  • Ability to penetrate interdiction fields
  • In endurance configuration, can drop bombs without need for resupply
Weaknesses:
  • Large blast radius upon destruction - if someone or something manages to kill a Chiloon-III in combat, all the explosive tiles that are then remaining will detonate; for this reason it is recommended not to maintain tight formations of Chiloon-IIIs
  • Exposed engines
  • ERA reduces pilot survivability in the event of a crash
  • In standard configuration, limited ordnance
  • In endurance configuration, unstable bomblet generator can take out the craft if the bomblet generator is fired too often
  • In endurance configuration, slow bombing rate of fire
Description: The Chiloon-III is borne of battle experience, with the main innovations of the Chiloon-III over the Chiloon-II being the addition of a HIMS on the upper wings, additional fuel tanks and the addition of explosive-reactive armor. The ERA increases its defenses against shrapnel, projectiles as well as asteroids; in fact, if an object hits it with sufficient force, the tile will detonate. In addition, while it outwardly looks like there are ten pylons across the two sets of wings, in fact, six of them are used as antennae for sensors and EWAR, so the outermost four pylons are, in fact, used to fit a variety of ordnance, usually of proton torpedo or concussion missile sizes. To accommodate the extra weight of ERA, four engines are installed, over the two engines of the original Chiloon series. However, given the extra weight of ERA, a HIMS and four ordnance pylons, the two additional engines do not provide extra speed or maneuverability. Also, outfitting ERA on a fighter is not without its hazards: large quantities of explosives are installed along the hull of the craft, allowing pilots to crash their craft on a target as a last-resort measure.

There are two configurations for the Chiloon-III: standard configuration, where physical ordnance is loaded in an underside bomb bay, and endurance configuration, where a heavy bomblet generator drops bombs without it needing for resupply, with the endurance configuration being used in higher-survivability missions than the standard configuration. Of course, the endurance configuration is not without its pitfalls: it takes longer to drop bombs using the heavy bomblet generator than with the standard configuration, and also dropping bombs too often can cause problems to the craft.
