PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Yam is a short and stout woman, though it would be ill-advised to underestimate her based on those physical qualities. She wears long flowing dull-colored robes that in reality disguise the battle armor and heavy weaponry she is clad with underneath. Outside her battle she keeps her hair flowing, mostly to hide the holdout blaster she keeps just above her left ear-lobe. Due to a messy boarding encounter several years ago her right ear is a gnarled mass of flesh that has poorly healed and she is missing her left ring finger.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Yam is gruff, to the point, and lacks the table usual manners of a ship captain, to say the least. Thirty-three years of waging a non-stop war of vengeance and a campaign of piracy at the edges of the Galaxy tends to do that to a person. She expects only the best from her crewmates and often seeks to push them to their very limits. However, on the rare occasion they fail, Yam does not immediately implement punitive punishment. Instead, taking inspiration from Chiss's commanders in the past, she encourages her men to learn from their mistakes. But if they continue to make the same disastrous mistakes over and over with no attempt to rectify it, she enjoys making examples of them to the crew by venting them out of the airlock.

Yam is surprisingly "noble" for a pirate as she has certain rules when taking a merchant ship. She would plunder the cargo but would never touch the personal possessions of the crew. If any of her men harmed or stole from the crew after they surrendered she would compensate the victims before personally slicing off the hands of the offender. Even when capturing the ships themselves as trophies she would ensure safe passage for the crew to the nearest hub world and provide enough credits for them to get home. This wasn't always out of compassion as from a purely pragmatic sense it encouraged targeted merchants to give up without a fight, sparing her the effort of having to violently chase down and board their ships.

Even though she has every exotic dish in the Galaxy at her disposal, Yam has a fond liking for simple leek soup as it reminds her dearly of her mother, and has it as a side at nearly every meal. Yam will often have multiple meals per day not because she is a glutton but because she still has strong trauma from her time in poverty where she and her mother would go weeks without eating to the point it emotionally hurts her to have anything close to an empty stomach. Despite rising from nothing to one of the most feared and wealthy pirates in her sector, she in some way is still that little poor hungry girl staring longingly through the display glass of the bakery at the extravagant cakes that one day she wished she could have.

HISTORY

Yam was born into poverty in the world of Corellia to a Human father and a Chiss mother, the former being absent leaving Yam to be raised by a single parent. Her early life was rough, to say the least, as she worked in terrible conditions as a spice runner for the boss of a local gang. It was a hazardous occupation for even the most hardened gangster to navigate the dangerous slums where an ambush could be waiting around every corner, much less a child. However, she instead excelled, her small form and natural Chiss cunning allowing her to slip by silently through gaps nobody thought possible. When she did fight she did so with such ferocity and viciousness for her small size that she quickly earned the name of "Grass Viper."

Yam's mother, Ziravi, wanted better for her daughter so worked agonizing hours in a textile mill to raise the credits needed to send her to Corellia's famed Flight Schools where she would be able to grasp at any opportunity among the twinkling stars. While Ziravi managed to finally raise the credits after years the exertion on her body left her vulnerable to sickness, eventually catching the fatal Tendor Virus. Despite Ziravi's pleas to leave her on her sickbed and make a future of herself, Yam refused to go of her mother and orchestrated a heist against her gang boss to pay for her mother's treatment.

After saving her mother, Yam joined the Corellian Security Force Academy where she came to excel at all courses. Her instructors noted her unique determination at every task, fermented by her desire to never return to the slums, and her out-of-the-box thinking when it came to fleet actions. She was given command of a CR90 Corvette, called the Chìlóng, and around the same time found the love of her life in the form of a fellow student named Zheng Yi.

Everything was going perfectly. Too perfectly.

It turned out the gang boss never forgot Yam's theft. During her wedding with her mother present, a bomb detonated. It was intended to kill Yam but failed, instead killing her wife and mother. But the gang boss wasn't done destroying her chance of happiness and used his political connections to frame Yam and her crew for treason. She and the Chìlóng barely managed to escape.

With a galactic bounty on her head and the head of her crew, she was forced to turn to piracy to survive. Despite only having an outdated CR90 Corvette she and her crew quickly became well-known due to their famed naval training and discipline. The speed of the CR90 Corvette allowed her to run down slow merchant ships and outrun patrol craft. She made it her policy, perhaps trying to hold onto the last vestiges of her Corellian Security Force past, to minimize the damage she caused during raids. But deteriorating conditions and the price of her bounty rising forced her to take drastic measures as the discipline of her crew deteriorated. After an incident where one of her crew-mates murdered a surrendering Security Officer she had him executed. This action would have caused a full-blown mutiny if she hadn't discovered the conspiracy in time and had the conspirators arrested.

However, despite their expectations for a horrible doom befalling them, Yam instead pardoned them as long as they all swore a personal oath to her. In doing so she had created a vital core of shipmen who would forever be loyal to her and eventually become her most capable officers.

As her infamy grew and attracted more attention from planetary security forces all around the sector it also attracted other pirates to join under her banner. Many of these pirates shared stories like her, betrayed by the very systems they had given their lives to, while others were plain opportunistic criminals. She sorted the chaff from the wheat, allowing only the most disciplined to join her ranks. They would all collectively share in the booty and even get to partake in a sort of democracy where they could collectively vote on vital decisions, so long as they followed her code of conduct. She grew from a single ship to two, to three, to four, until she had a small armada under her control.

This armada would become known as the Red Confederation due to the stark blood-red their starships were painted in.

Yet, even after nearly two decades had passed, vengeance still burned brightly in Yam's heart. The gang leader who had torn away everything she loved had only risen through the ranks of Corellian politics until it looked like he had a real chance of becoming Prime Minister of the Five Worlds. Her revenge was slow but methodical and all-encompassing. The pain he had wrought on her would be inflicted back on him tenfold. The Red Confederation began to exclusively raid his business and smuggling ships, stealing not only his goods and redistributing it back to the people of Corellia but also seizing information revealing his criminal that they released onto the holonet. Bit by bit Yam tore down his underground empire but that wasn't enough. As the gang boss was in the middle of giving a televised speech insisting on his innocence and that he was being framed, Yam snuck up behind him and disemboweled him in front of billions of watchers before slipping away.

Her vengeance was now complete yet it did not fill the hole in her heart. She now continues with her piracy, being known as the Pirate Duchess for the fleet she commands, yet at the same time seeks a greater cause to fulfill herself.
