SPECIAL FEATURES:
  • Due to the properties of fire in space, the micro-flares will ‘burn’ slowly and in sluggish, spherical shapes, the lingering heat mimicking the thermal signature of ships’ engines, and are sufficient therefore to confuse heat-seeking projectiles pulling them away from the actual ship.
  • Pyronium, which not only absorbs but holds a potent ion charge, will disrupt, confuse, or disable guidance systems and homing devices joining with the clouds of particles themselves to cause incoming projectiles to prematurely detonate safely away from ships, mistaking the cloud for the ship itself.
  • Dampener aerosol creates a localized cloud, through which passing blaster bolts and other energy weapon rounds are greatly diminished, degenerating the containment fields surrounding them and causing them to experience noted reductions in power.
STRENGTHS:
  • Able to thwart and confound a variety of projectile weapons such as torpedoes, missiles, and rockets by confusing or disabling guidance, homing, and heat-seeking tracking systems, causing misdirection and safe-distance/premature detonation.
  • Able to degrade and de-power incoming blaster (or other energy weapons) fire, reducing them to harmless or near-harmless levels.
WEAKNESSES:
  • Chaff launchers cannot be reloaded from inside the ships they are mounted on, meaning they require ground crews or skilled technicians to do so when – and only when – landed (as on a ship, space station, or planetary surface). Once exhausted, replenished or renewed capability will require landing to make possible.
  • Due to relatively short range, duration, and localized area of effect, a single volley may not be sufficient to block all incoming threats or launchers may not be sufficient to provide complete protection against multiple simultaneous attacks launched on different vectors. In short, a single volley will only protect against attacks coming in a single general direction.
  • Not suitable for ships above 200m in size, as they will lack the ability to provide sound coverage/protection to supply ratios.
  • Short duration means that coverage/protection is not indefinite and will not last beyond a few seconds’ time.
  • Significant energy weapons fire, such as heavy turbolasers and the like, will not be much affected by the dampener aerosol and will still cause notable damage though perhaps not quite as much as they might have without it.
  • Offers no protection against kinetic weapons like slugthrowers and railguns.
DESCRIPTION:

Rectangular duraplast casings, made of reinforced stygian-triprismatic polymer, are durable and resilient and moreover, are resistant against enemy scanners and sensors, enhancing the overall stealth of ships they are mounted on. Each launcher holds a pack containing two (2) rounds, which can be deployed by computer-assistance linked to lock-threat warning systems onboard the ship, adjusting them for angles and timing to maximize effectiveness. These launchers need to be reloaded when landed by skilled technicians or ground ordinance crews, meaning once exhausted they won’t be replenished again until the ship they are mounted on makes a landing, such as aboard a nearby carrier or similar platform.

Each round produces a dense cloud of ionized pyronium particles and micro-flares which are able to confound electronic guidance and homing systems, as well as heat-seeking munitions, causing them to become confused and detonate prematurely at safe(r) distances away from the ship. Further, dampener aerosol is also released to form a slightly larger cloud which degrades the containment fields of energy weapons fire passing through them, rendering them significantly weaker or even causing them to dissipate entirely. Thus, in the event of a ship losing normal shield protection, the Charlatan Chaff Launcher System provides a complex and potent secondary defensive system able to diminish or defeat incoming enemy fire of various kinds, at least until these become exhausted.

The protection is not absolute. Multiple simultaneous attacks from different vectors will not be stopped by a single round and multiple rounds may be required to provide coverage and protection to several sides of the targeted vessel. Additionally, the effects of these countermeasures last only a few seconds. Therefore, the timing, angle, and number of rounds used must all be properly executed to achieve maximum protection levels, and even then, very powerful energy weapons or kinetic projectiles such as those employed by slugthrowers and railguns will continue to offer serious threat to targeted ships.
