First Reply Chandrilan squig amuse-bouche

"But why do they call it that?" Max looked at Landon as he fixed his bowtie. The puzzled pinch of his brow genuine.

Landon took a shallow drag of the spice stick perched precariously between his lips. Stars, they were stuck in the middle of Devaron at some fancy-arsed space wizard gala where mooks with a kriff ton of credits to burn came to gawk at nature while eating things called amuse-bouche. Landon tugged at the crisp collar of his waiter get-up.

What a lousy job.

On top of playing waiter-boy, he had to put up with Max. At least on this job he wasn't the youngest. By a cycle. Look at that? Something Max was useful for already.

The smoke of his death stick puffed out and curled lazily in front of Max's expectant face.

"Max, you're asking all the wrong questions. These mooks need fancy words to eat fancy food." Landon took a step and leaned in closer, whispering in Max's ear. "You should be asking yourself what the big boss is after here. What do we get outta this job?" Max blinked as Landon pulled back, grabbing a tray of Chandrilan squig amuse-bouche. With a shuffle, he lined up with the other staff. Some were organics, like him. Some were also in the gang, like himself and Max. And some were plain ol' droids.

"Kid, put that out before you go in." The one in charge of the wait staff with the oiled moustache pointed at Landon. Landon made sure to take his sweet time taking a final drag, eyes rolling. "Not a kid, ol' man." With a lazy flick of his fingers, the drug disappeared. The doors opened and he followed the other line of waiters out to the gala beyond.

Dressed in deep eggplant, her bodyguard droid to her left, Persephone took in the scene before her. Another gala and it was her least favorite of all ; for a Senator's son. A political fundraiser-slash-elbow rubbing disguised as a university graduation party. She was getting good at looking between the lines of all these events. At this point she had politely greeted their host before stationing herself up against a corner. A few others mingled near her, trying to blend in to the walls, hoping to make it through the night.

Carefully taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, a moment passed and she was able to get a canape as well. At the very least she would eat something before disappearing.

"How soon can I leave, Zee?"

[ Approximately one hour, fifty-eight minutes, and twenty-seven seconds. Two hours will be acceptable. It will allow for the event to be in full swing, letting you leave unnoticed. ]

"How important is this person on a scale of one to ten?"

[ Not terribly. These types tend to inflate their own worth Miss Persephone. ]

"I'll enjoy the free food until then. Maybe I'll run in to someone."

Kriff, Landon hadn't seen so many lightswords hanging from fancy-arsed belts in one location in a long time. This was certainly going to be tricky for the bosses. Max shared a worried look with him and Landon just shrugged.

Higher than his paygrade.

They split off, carrying those plates of food and sparkling bubbly liquids to the guests. Landon was carrying some dish that was very popular at events like this. And expensive. He'd bet the food on this one tray alone could pay for a new ship for himself.

Gorram rich mooks.

He strolled toward the corner of the room, scoping out the place. Offering the food as he went until he ended up in front of a girl with bright blue eyes and dark hair. And a droid. At least she didn't have a saber at her belt. He swooped the tray in front of her as he paused.

"Chandrilan squig Miss...?" Landon flashed a charming smile.

Lost in her plotting to escape, she didn't see the waiter come towards her until the last moment. Her first bite gone, the teenager was nursing her champagne, studying the room to see if she recognized a familiar face. None so far.

Why did her parents even make her come to these events? Right, it was one of the few socially acceptable party outlets she was allowed, given what her adoptive parents did in life.

Oceanic blue gaze met the waiter then the squigs. Frankly looked like snot in some type of water. Something she had never seen nor heard of.

If she was being honest they looked like slugs she would eat out of desperation back when she was a child. Not something she wanted to relive.

"Oh, no thank you Sir." Head inclined to a group of girls. "They look interested. Slimy food goes down the digestive track faster and easier - maybe they won't gain weight. Seems a good way to sell it to the crowd anyhow."

Landon Landon

"Kress," he couldn't help his scoundrel's smile turn more crooked. "Don't think I've ever had no one call me 'sir' before."

Grey-blue eyes lingered on her face for a hair too long. More like he was trying to put together a puzzle he didn't understand. Before they flickered over to the gaggle of girls she pointed at. He pulled the tray back from her and stepped so he was at her side, looking out at the room as she was. She didn't seem like a wall-flower but definitely had the position.

"You come to these fancy-arsed events often?"

He'd have to move soon. But for now it was nice to talk to someone else that didn't have a stick so far shoved up their arse.

The aristocratic hum of the Devaronian gala was a familiar equation, but the physical handling of his premium product was a complete logistical disaster.

To the wealthy scions, corporate elites, and political donors currently mingling near the pillared arches of the estate, Roqar Zatt was just an intensely loud, fussy alien vendor fluttering his wings in a frantic blur. He hovered exactly three inches above a velvet-upholstered bench near the grand ballroom, aggressively adjusting his data-slate as he watched the wait staff distribute his cargo.

"It is an absolute blemish on my corporate ledger!" Roqar whined loudly, his high-pitched voice cutting directly through the classical strings echoing from the terrace. "Commanders Galactic Gastronomy did not secure a priority, sub-light transit waiver across the sector just to watch local handlers ruin the presentation! The Felucian Sunshine-Melon canapés require a precise, rapid distribution angle to maintain their flavor profile! If they sit in this room's humidity for too long, the imported zest oxidizes into an unpalatable brine! Sludge! And then who explains the ruined margins to the Senator's house? Me! Roqar Zatt!"

He gestured wildly with his stubby, three-fingered hands, his webbed feet kicking dramatically at the air as he threw a spectacular, performative temper tantrum over food service quality. It was a masterful, exhausting routine. To anyone looking, he was the ultimate pedantic non-human merchant, entirely consumed by petty greed and the perfection of his niche grocery delivery. But his commercial presence here was thoroughly authorized and completely real. Armed with authentic corporate purchase orders, he had landed The Manifest on a primary hangar pad to physically supply the estate's legendary luxury menu with his exclusive delicacy. His alibi was verifiable down to the last decimal point on his datapad. Because his high-society clients trusted his photographic palate and flawless delivery windows, he had a legally unassailable right to roam the venue's secure corridors, inspect the service stations, and monitor the cargo ramps.

Beneath the frantic buzzing of his wings, however, lay a calculating, cold military intellect that was actively mapping out a far more dangerous transaction.

His true motivation on Devaron was a closely guarded clerical secret. His private data-mining of archived military records had flagged a severe, un-repealed clerical error tied to this exact estate. Decades ago, an Alliance expeditionary team had quietly routed a highly sensitive archaeological containment unit directly to the secure vaults beneath this manor under the mundane listing of "Pneumatic Actuator Coupling, Type-7". The wealthy politicians and oblivious teenagers in the room were far too busy drinking champagne to notice the ancient manifest numbers buried under centuries of bureaucratic noise—and Roqar intended to balance that ledger before the gala concluded.

Behind his right shoulder, the massive, matte-black silhouette of S'tosh moved with terrifyingly quiet grace, the Dowutin bodyguard keeping his tree-trunk arms crossed while his dark eyes silently traced the structural weak points and exit vectors of the corridor. To Roqar's left, the mirror-sheen chromium surface of SE-4 "Lux" gleamed in the firelight, elegantly carrying a silver tray to blend seamlessly with the domestic droids. As Roqar carried on, Lux quietly engaged his sensors as programmed, observing the crowd for the kinds of subtle shifts in emotion or behavior that had given Roqar the edge in countless social and business engagements. A subtle diagnostic ping flared across the inner lens of Roqar's cybernetic eyewear, sent directly from Lux's optical scanners. It wasn't a magical revelation of anything in particuluar; it was a simple, professional alert regarding a major breach of product handling protocol.

[PRODUCT MATRIX: INVENTORY NEGLECT]
[TARGET: LOCAL CONTRACTED WAITER "LANDON"]
[VIOLATION: LINGERING AT TARGET TABLE / PREMIUM STOCK STAGNATION]

Roqar's cold eyes drifted toward the corner of the room. A young waiter carrying a tray of his premium melon canapés had completely abandoned his route. Instead of circulating the floor to keep the delicate appetizers moving, the boy had stepped right up to the side of a young woman dressed in deep eggplant silk, leaning in and engaging in a casual, highly un-professional conversation.

Incompetent slacker, Roqar calculated internally, his whiny merchant facade remaining perfectly intact while his inner thoughts moved with clockwork precision. If the product spoils on his tray, it reflects poorly on my brand. Worse, if the estate's actual floor managers start a shouting match with the staff over station neglect, it will draw additional security droids right to this sector, cutting off my path to the lower stairwells.

Roqar knew he had to take a chance or risk losing out on his opportunity to see if his intel on the artifact was correct or not. Adjusting his tailored Corellian silk vest, Roqar let out a sharp, rhythmic 'clink' of his heavy gemstone rings against his glass as he drifted forward. As always since receiving the ring it was housed it, Roqar was entirely oblivious to the fact that the deep violet crystal on his right hand was emitting a near-silent hum into the Force, broadcasting a microscopic signal straight into the grand hall.

The whiny, rapid-fire Toydarian dialect returned in full force as he floated directly toward the corner where Landon and Persephone were talking.
"Excuse me! You! In the waiter's vest!" Roqar snapped, his wings fluttering obnoxiously as he intercepted the pair, completely playing the part of a hyper-protective, tyrannical product vendor. "Are my squigs and fine canapés going to walk themselves across the ballroom floor? I did not spend thousands of credits on hyper-baric stasis padding just to watch my stock evaporate while you stand around acting like a wall-flower! Move that tray and circulate those appetizers before they dissolve into unmarketable mush!"

He offered an exasperated sigh, turning his eyes toward Persephone with a swift, polite incline of his head that masked his calculating gaze, hoping he had not pressed the poor boy to harshly. "My deepest apologies, My Lady. The local staff hired for these galas have absolutely zero understanding of temperature-sensitive logistics. May the Profit Favor You. Returning his gaze to Landon, he said "Now, boy—move those melons!"

"Unfortunately yes. I'm sure you've seen me before and you didn't realize it."

Persephone was assuming he was a waiter or caterer at these events. From what she could tell most in the upper echelons were using many of the same companies. Made sense. Having a new company serve cold food or a waiter offend the guests would be a certified disaster and a social faux pas for whomever put the event together.

Just as she was about to ask a follow up question on the nature of his work, a hot-headed Toydarian fluttered over, screeching at the top of his little lungs. Persephone resisted the urge to roll her eyes in case the motion got back to her parents or to Danger Arceneau. She found the entire display quite embarrassing for the Toydarian. Not very masculine either, but who was she to question such things. Just a personal opinion.

"Excuse me Sir." Persephone spoke up before the waiter could. "While I understand you are paying for a service from this young man, I find your tone to be highly disruptive to the evening. There are ladies present."

If she had learned anything quickly in these circles was that there was a decorum to follow.

"Furthermore, if you are worried about your canapes dissolving so quickly, then perhaps you should have paid a better credit for a more premium product. Sounds as if you skimped on quality for an event so critical."

Persephone Dashiell Persephone Dashiell

Ah frek. One of the bosses. Not THE boss. The one who thought he was in charge. The little blue bastard's face went a shade redder than Landon would've thought possible. Whether it was because of the chewing-out or the fact some fancy rich bird had just called him cheap in front of half the room, Lancon couldn't rightly tell.

Didn't matter much.

He bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to stop the grin trying to crawl across his face.

Karking netherworld...

If words could nick a purse, she'd just cleaned the poor sod out. The Toydarian spluttered something about standards and reputation before huffing off to find someone who wasn't being publicly dressed down by a woman half his size. Landon watched him buzz away, then looked back to Persephone.

"...Y'know," he said after a beat, shifting the tray onto one hip. His mouth twitched. He held his tongue for a moment.

There was an awkward pause. He wasn't sure what the proper etiquette was when a noble decided you were worth defending. Bow? Thank her? Pretend it hadn't happened?

He settled on scratching the back of his neck.

"Thanks?" His brow furrowed. "Didn't exactly need rescuin'." The words came out with more pride than conviction. Truth was, he'd stood there and taken worse from others a lot scarier because answering back meant getting hurt, docked pay, or worse.

His eyes drifted after the retreating Toydarian.

"...Still."

A crooked grin finally won.

"Callin' 'im too poor for decent canapés..." He barked out a laugh under his breath. "Tha's kriffin' vicious." Head shoot as he gnawed on the inside of his cheek, catching the chrono on the far wall. Things were about to get messy. He glanced toward the musicians, then the main doors. His voice dropped low enough not to be heard above the clinking crystal.

"...I'd finish yer drink an' be somewhere else in the next five minutes."

He started to step away, then hesitated.

"Nothin' personal. Jus'..." He rubbed at the bridge of his nose. "Big night's about t' get a whole lot bigger. An' rich folk've got a nasty habit o' bein' where all the trouble starts."

Landon went to move away. He needed to slip back into the crowd. Be just another forgettable waiter weaving between silk gowns and expensive suits. Exactly where nobody ever thought to look. He had to get into position.

"Vicious, yes."

Persephone wasn't looking for praise or thanks. Yet she also wasn't expecting a 'didn't need rescuing' response. Oceanic eyes narrowed slightly, taking note of this waiter. Not that she was the type to act on a small grudge, there was a feeling this idiot was in the same vein as her idiotic father. There was no genetic resemblance, this guy was just too-cool-for-school on his own.

"Get out of here?...Alright..."

Considering she had wanted to leave anyway, Persephone took this as time to leave. Not finished with her champagne, the teenage girl was going to take her glass with her. They could bill her some inflated price later.

"Looks like we get to go home Zee."

[ Guess you got your wish Miss Persephone. ]

No way was she waiting around to find out what happened in the next ten minutes.
