PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Maneuverability — The Centripetal Compass is a structure that contains hardware can 1.) manipulate the vessel's gravity in order to improve its turn radius and thrust-to-weight ratio, and software that can 2.) coordinate the maneuver boosters already equipped on the vessel to improve the efficiency of the ship's movements.
STRENGTHS
  • Maneuverability — The Centripetal Compass can improve the maneuverability of large capital ships.
  • Repulsorlift — The Centripetal Compass can allow a vessel to remain suspended in the air. This technology can perform the role of a repulsor.
  • Confusing Signals — Due to how the Centripetal Compass manipulates the vessel's gravity to improve maneuverability, this also has the unintended consequence of giving off a false reading to sensors. The decreased mass of the vessel can give off the appearance the ship is smaller than it is. However, the heat signature and other detectable signals give away the true scale of the ship.
WEAKNESSES
  • Large Infrastructure — The Centripetal Compass cannot be installed on a starship that is smaller than 750 meters. Whenever this device is installed in a starship that's smaller than 2,000 meters, it frequently protrudes from the hull of the vessel, similar to how the solar ionization reactor protrudes from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. These protrusions can be vulnerable to enemy harassment - an easy target to afflict damage which can knock-out the Centripetal Compass. When the vessel depends on the Centripetal Compass to remain suspended over the terrain of a planet, this can have disastrous effects, crashing the vessel into the ground.
  • Power Requirement — The Centripetal Compass requires an immense amount of power. Frequently the Centripetal Compass competes with energy-based weaponry and more complicated shield systems for power.
  • Atmosphere — The maneuverability enhancements that the Centripetal Compass provides, decreases noticeably when the vessel equipped with this hardware falls under the effects of a planet's gravity and atmospheric pressure.
  • Electromagnetic Pulse — The Centripetal Compass can be temporarily knocked out by natural phenomena or weapon systems which cause electrical disturbances.
DESCRIPTION
The Federal Cooperative began development of multiple systems that could increase the maneuverability of capital ships. Most of these projects went nowhere and were discontinued. Between 700 and 828 ABY, the Federal Cooperative would go through seventy-eight projects. Each of them ended in failure. They main impediment to their efforts were their desire to create a cost-effective answer for credits-strapped governments in the outward sectors of the Galaxy. However, they continued to explore the idea until they finally reached a sufficient answer. One of their divisions on Corellia would develop the Centripetal Compass, which would be a sophisticated, albeit, colossal piece of hardware that could achieve the outcome they desired. One of the drawbacks though was the scale of the Centripetal Compass would preclude it from being used on smaller capital ships - which were far more common in the Outer Rim. However, this was the first step in the right direction, and they approved the production of the new ship component for the open market in 830 ABY.
