Aiden finished the examination of his lightsaber and, with one exception, was pleased with what he discovered. The electronic circuitry proved to be sound as he hoped. Also, as he expected, he found the focusing crystal to be damaged. Inspection with a magnifier revealed the crystal to contain thousands of almost microscopic fractures. He wondered idly if there was a shatterpoint within the crystal now, that if struck, would turn his prize from Ilum into a pile of blue-green sand.
It was an academic question; one that he wouldn’t challenge as the Ilum crystal held a great deal of sentimental value to the young jedi. Master Bokato had taken Aiden to Ilum to find a crystal for his lightsaber construction assignment. It became more of a challenge as a sith knight happened to be in the old temple and attacked Aiden. Aiden still bore the scar from that knight’s lightsaber but held his own in the dramatic, yet short lived battle. He returned to their transport, bloodied, but happy to show his fretting master his collection bag full of crystals.
Aiden smiled wistfully at the memory and made a mental note to construct a display holder for the crystal. It had been overloaded and failed when he used his lightsaber as a focusing conduit while exorcising residual dark sorceries discovered in an ancient sacrificial chamber using Force Light. While successful, the immense flow of power overwhelmed the crystal.
While eventually essential, replacing the crystal wasn’t immediately urgent. Jon Burke loaned him a lightsaber from his collection until he could repair his own. While he doubted that he would need it, it was reassuring to have should the unexpected arise.
Aiden rubbed his finger over the intricate engraving found on the handgrip and marveled at the craftsmanship involved in its construction. It was apparently made by an ancestor in the Burke family that was a jedi master. Even now, it burned with a white brilliance Aiden found hard to fathom. He was sorely tempted to open it and study its construction, but, he knew Jon would never forgive him if he somehow broke what was considered a family treasure. He was actually still perplexed at Jon’s offer and extremely grateful.
Aiden put down the antique and picked up his tablet. He reviewed the research he had accumulated on crystal sources and began eliminating possibilities. He was loath to return to Ilum – it was at the far side of the galaxy, almost impossible to locate, and freezing cold – none of which appealing in the least. It was, however, the most likely location to find Aiden’s goal, Adegan Pontite. Of the other known sources – Adega, Halm, Mygeeto, and Cularin – only the Cularin system seemed to offer more than a blind, planet-wide search for the elusive crystals. That was mainly because the source planet, Oblis, was shattered by the Darkstaff and its remains consisted of the Cularin Asteroid Belt. The crystal deposits on that planet reportedly remained virtually intact and now consisted of one of the larger asteroids in the belt. The only trick was getting there. Apparently the massive collection of crystals interfered with sensors and navigation making even piloting in its vicinity a hazard.
Aiden considered himself a competent pilot and handled his Baudo with no problems. He was the first to admit, however, that he relied almost exclusively on the systems AI and the navigation computer to calculate courses for him. He was definitely no sextant-wielding mariner and knew his limitations. He would need a more experienced pilot to navigate that asteroid belt. He hoped his new alliance with the Silver Jedi would provide a solution. He posted a request on the SJ message board and waited.
