PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Aurora Industries
  • Affiliation:
    • Aurora Industries
    • Individuals and Factions that have purchased, licensed, or contracted the company.
  • Model: Carbuncle Shielding System
  • Modularity:
    • No, components cannot be swapped out.
  • Production: Semi-Unique
    • The Carbuncle Shielding System is designed almost exclusively by the company for their larger vessels due to the extremely high power demands, so unless specifically commissioned or modified, the Carbuncle will usually only be found on vessels over 1000 meters.

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Influenced by Mon Calamari shielding design philosophy, and building off the system established from the Kirin, the Carbuncle makes use of six overlapping energy fields that are created from multiple embedded emitter arrays in a vessel's hull. As an advancement for the Carbuncle over the Kirin, each layer, except for the first, of the shielding can be switched for different types of shields depending upon the situation. Listed below is the standard configuration of the shielding:
    • The outermost layer of the shield, designated Ruby Light, is a vastly improved version of the electromirror created by the Xandret Shielding System that makes use of features from the Bounceback technology, point-of-impact shielding, and retribution feedback shield technology. Whenever an energy-based weapon attack impacts the shield properly, it will more often than not reflect towards its source, empowered by energy feedback from the Carbuncle to inflict a higher degree of damage on that source than the original shot.
    • The second layer of the projected shield is a reinforcing particle shield to blunt or deflect kinetic weapons, such as those from a mass driver or hypervelocity cannon.
    • The third layer of the projected shield is a reinforcing ray shield to deflect further or mitigate any energy weapons, such as from a turbolaser, laser cannon, or ion weaponry.
    • The fourth layer of the projected shield is a second particle shield to blunt further or deflect kinetic weapons, such as from a mass driver or hypervelocity cannon.
    • The fifth layer of the projected shield is a reinforcing ion shield to mitigate ion and EMP weaponry damage to both the vessel's shields and electronic systems.
    • The sixth layer of the projected shield is based on molecular shielding, allowing the shields to absorb incoming energy weapons, such as from a turbolaser, laser cannon, or ion weaponry. The absorbed energy is shunted into capacitor banks that an equipped starship or vehicle can use to distribute increased power to other systems or even back into their other shielding layers.
  • The Carbuncle Shielding System emitters make use of a dynamic modulation and oscillation to create an invisible eddying or cyclical motion throughout each shield layer that can deflect kinetic projectiles away, essentially pushing enemy fire away from the equipped vessel. This also helps the system counter shield-leeching technology as the energy-absorbing beam can't latch onto any one particular portion of the shield before it shifts away to be replaced by an equally powerful layered field.
  • A secondary module of the Carbuncle also projects shift and relativistic shielding for equipped starships, with this secondary module able to function even if the rest of the shielding system is knocked out to prevent time dilation or particle impacts from dust and other space-borne debris.
  • Making use of haysian smelt and diatium in the construction of the system, the Carbuncle has an enhanced refresh and recharge rate as compared to standard deflector shields due to the energy efficiency of the materials and their conductive capabilities.
STRENGTHS
  • The Carbuncle makes use of several different types of shielding in conjunction with its Ruby Light electromirror in a six-layered system to give any equipped starship superior shield protection and reflection capabilities. The system can also alternate what ship type is present at each layer beneath the Ruby Light for more adaptive capabilities and versatility. The installed capacitor banks also assist with the reflection properties of the Ruby Light electromirror to ensure any reflected energy attack is returned to sender with more damage potential than the original shot.
  • Each shield emitter for the Carbuncle oscillates and cycles its shields to help counter shield-leeching technology and to deflect kinetic projectiles away from the equipped vessel.
  • The Carbuncle has an enhanced recharge rate, coming back online much faster than other deflector shield systems if they are knocked out or overwhelmed by enemy fire.
WEAKNESSES
  • The enhancing effect on the reflected energy-based weaponry relies upon the capacitor banks tied into the Carbuncle. If those capacitor banks are depleted, any reflected shots will be their original strength or even weaker until those capacitor banks are recharged from either absorbed fire or from the vessel's power systems. In addition, while extremely effective, the reflecting capabilities of the Ruby Light layer are not foolproof. Concentrated fire can overwhelm the layer and breach it, and as the outermost layer, it takes the longest to recharge.
  • A perfectly aimed kinetic shot or ordnance can slip between the oscillating fields, ricocheting within the shield layers to inflict compounding damage to the shields like a pinball until the projection or ordnance is ejected or makes impact against the equipped vessel.
  • While the shield emitters of the system are scattered across an equipped starship or vehicle's hull to avoid one large target for an enemy to concentrate on, it does mean that if sections of the equipped ship or vehicle are damaged and the emitters go with them, it can create gaps in the shielding and provide an enemy with an unprotected target until shields can be redistributed.
DESCRIPTION

As part of Aurora Industries' Aeon Program, the Carbuncle Shielding System was designed to be a heavier and more powerful version of the Kirin Shielding System that the company had previously developed. Much like the Alexander-type hull plating, the Carbuncle was created with capital-scale vessels in mind, with its design team originally planning to equip and test the system on the Defiance before its commissioning and deployment was accelerated at the request of its commanding officer. With the additional development time, the team focused on incorporating and improving upon an even older system, the Xandret, to include in the Carbuncle.

Designated Ruby Light, the new electromirror shield system had improved reflective capabilities for energy-based weapons, being tied into the capacitor banks of the Carbuncle to add additional damage potential to reflected strikes and with the previous design flaws eliminated. Beneath the Ruby Light were an additional five layers of adaptable shielding, although a standard configuration of the shielding layers was provided in the system's technical readout. These layers, at the direction of an equipped vessel's engineers or officers, could be swapped for different layers of the Carbuncle's traditional shielding types to suit any situation the equipped vessel might encounter, whether it needs more energy protection or additional kinetic defenses. In addition, the new shield emitters created for the Carbuncle were designed to oscillate and cycle their shields to ensure a system like a shield-leech could never weaken any specific section enough to threaten its integrity as a new part of the shield would rotate in, and the damaged portion would rotate out.
