I have tried many times to change this character's display name, but each time it tells me that the current password is incorrect. I've logged out and logged back in, so I know the password to be correct.

Name changes only work on the Writer account. Being that sub accounts are made under the affiliation of the Writer, the account needs to be signed in to reach that sub. That being said, there is no password for the subs, so it will always come up with incorrect.
That being said, I have tested it dozens of times. Writers can change names. Just no character accounts.
