- Name: Canis Snowus
- Designation: Sentient
- Homeworld: Hoth
- Language: Barking, physical motion, and telepathy. Basic, Wookiee, Huttese, and a few other common languages if they really put a lot of effort into it.
- Average height of adults: 3 feet
- Skin color: White
- Hair color: White to gold
- Breathes: Type 1
- Strengths:
- (+) Extremely cute - squee!
- (+) Very strong - heavy and muscled enough to take down anything nine feet or smaller
- (+) Friendly - Because everybody needs a big white snowball following them around.
- (+) Highly Intelligent - Are smarter than many biped races, and are quite capable of using most technology.
- (+) Keen senses - their senses of smell, taste, and sight are very strong.
- (+) Thick fur - easy for them to keep warm
- Weaknesses:
- (-) Thumbs are not quite opposable - these guys can't pilot or hold most round objects, except in their mouths, which is kinda not helpful
- (-) thick fur - easy to get overheated. Their fur can be cut or shaved down a bit, though.
- (-) Not very stealthy - great, when you want some muscle, but are not good at keeping total silence
- (-) Not very patient - if they need something, they need it now.... Or they might piss on you.
- Distinctions: thick, fuzzy quadrupeds, sometimes with furry wings showing.
- Average Lifespan: 150 - 300, depending on individual
- Races: Snowus Blancus - White, Snowus Aurum - Gold
- Estimated Population: Common as a pet and/or travelling companion. Only found in large numbers on Hoth, though
- Diet: Whatever they think is edible. Puppies will sometimes eat trash, if they think it smells good. A few kinds of vines, and some types of raw meat are semi-toxic to them, though.
- Communication: Telepathy or actual spoken language.
- Culture: Baby Snowus (puppies) are extremely cute creatures that most resemble balls of fur. They don't usually know how to communicate other than barking and other noises until the age of ten, when they start developing telepathic ability. This is usually limited to communication until maturity (usually around 19-23 years), when they really learn how to use it to hunt. When hunting, Snowus often use their telepathy to make the prey stop in their tracks, or even simply slow down a bit. Very powerful Snowus have learned real Force techniques, like mind crush, animal empathy, and minor telekinesis, which they mostly use to pelt each other with snow.
The Snowus govern themselves by dint of choosing seven hunt-chiefs, one from each over-pack. Each over-pack can contain as many as twenty smaller families or tribes. The Hunt-chiefs are really only there to advise the clan/tribe leaders what to do in given situations. Power struggle is minimized by simply pushing out any chief that does something really shameful.
the Snowus enjoy making art. While some define their pee in the snow as art, others actually scratch out portraits, sculptures, or even small buildings out of the ice. The most well-known of these ice-buildings is the Icefort, where the galaxy at large actually became aware of the Snowus and their presence.
- Technology level: They are easily able to adapt to technology if it is brought to them, but they mostly lack technology themselves. They are able to build simple devices made from scrap or parts given to them by alien settlements nearby. As the species as a whole became more intelligent, they realized that the big shiny 'rocks' that sometimes fell from the sky
- General behavior: Snowus are generally a happy, friendly, and principled bunch. Almost ridiculously so. The first time a Snowus was attacked by another sentient, it simply kept trying to lick the person, until it actually shot at him. Then the assailant simply ran away when the individual probed his mind a bit. Snowus don't keep themselves to themselves whatsoever. They explore the planet almost constantly, sometimes running into towns (which are fun), and sometimes running into pirates (also fun, to chase, anyway), and even into gangsters (who are sometimes killed for trying to attack them)
- History: The Snowus are a relatively recent evolution (~ 700 years before present time) of a small, previously unnoticed pack hunting race. Contact with sentient races and larger creatures made the species generally get larger and more intelligent, as survival of the fittest demanded. The Snowus were first sighted in 740 ABY, but disappeared into obscurity until 830 ABY, when the Icefort, a large creation of ice and big pieces of rock that houses most of the most sage old Snowus, and many of the youngest puppies.
- It is interesting to note that the researcher who discovered them, despite being a seven foot tall, male, muscle-bound Falleen, was rendered totally incomprehensible by their cuteness. All that anybody ever got out of him was a continuous squeaking sound. He died of a blaster shot to the head when a grumpy bounty hunter couldn't take his continuous squeakinganymore.
- Notable Player-Characters: N/A
- Intent: To create a sentient species that has formed an actual society on Hoth, without actually having much outside contact. Also, because everybody needs a furry friend who's not liable to gut them with a knife for cuddling too much.
