DESCRIPTION
The Browning rapid-fire ion cannon builds on the success of today's rapid-fire point-defense weapons and, with its improved ion accu-accelerator, makes it possible to fire four standard ion cannon shots in the time it would take a standard ion cannon to fire one shot, at the cost of a correspondingly higher power drain, and for this reason cannot be mounted in more than three tubes in one hardpoint. Its cooling system, making use of flared fins, allows the ion cannon tubes to prevent heat buildup. However, the Browning suffers from the classical weaknesses of ion cannons: while it can fry electronic systems and shields inside starships, it does not deal any hull damage.

Important note: for shipbuilding purposes, one Browning tube is worth four turbolasers

Strengths:
  • High firing rate
  • Can fry shields and electronic systems
Weaknesses:
  • Deals next to no damage against hulls
  • Prone to misfires if fired too often, resulting in the emplacement being itself disabled
  • High power drain; can potentially drain shields

So some questions on this sub.

-Weakness : high power drain. Is this for the starship using these cannons? Please clarify, give some insight onto what would exactly happen (i.e. life support failures if over used, draining of shields, etc)

Won't damage hulls isn't much of a weakness either. Electronics and shields are the lifeblood of any vessel. Once the electronics go down one may be as good as dead. You can't pilot, you've got no shields and you're essentially blind. Hull damage can sometimes be mitigated by closing down corridors/doors and pressurizing areas.

[member="Delila Castillon"] I'll go with draining of shields; also if it is used too much to the point draining of shields becomes problematic, there's also the risk of misfire, which could disable the emplacement if it occurs.
