Bright Tree Village

Dunames Lopez

Megalomaniac CEO of Star Tours
"Star Tours is now offering convenient daily departures to the exotic Forest Moon of Endor. Come spend an afternoon or the entire day with the lovable Ewoks in their charming tribal villages. It's a fun-filled visit that you and your family will remember forever. Just ask for the Endor Express, available only from Star Tours! Reservations are limited so call your travel agent or Star Tours today!" the holoadvertisement made with Dunames' voiceover blared.

Endor, a standard day or two after hostilities ceased. This was Star Tours' chance to take advantage of the very first landing of the reborn Endor Express (from Xal 3) to make an announcement relative to Star Tours' goodwill efforts as it pertain to the Ewok reserve on Endor, encompassing, in its initial stages, the charming tribal villages of Bright Tree Village and Hanging Moss Village. Morgain Industries, while a relative unknown to the galaxy, could still be contracted to do work on Endor because the damage has been relatively limited. Nothing like the damage sustained on Atrisia, which even Taking Off on a Star Tour covered from Dulvoyinn. With Star Tours stationing a TOoaST office at every major hub, they could act as a news channel. Sure the reserve may not have the official blessing of the First Order authorities but at least the First Order seemed to appreciate nature conservancy as well as the preservation of local populations. [member="Jaina Morgain"] took advantage of this visit to seal a deal with this space travel company called Star Tours...

Clack. Clack. Clack. Clack.

Jaina's heels struck the floor with a precision that clockmakers strive for. She was here to meet with a person interested in relief efforts for Endor. She had taken her executive corvette from Luthien to Endor, a not inconsiderable trip, but one well worth it if it got Morgain Industries on the lips of more people around the galaxy. Jaina turned a corner and nodded at a pair of guards in sharp uniforms. It was one of the tell tales of the regime that ruled over Endor now, but it didn't frighten Jaina. She had the money to create influence, and the interest of hungry populations to turn the influence into clout in the right conditions. She stopped at the door to a conference room. The number on it was the one where she was supposed to meet her contact. She checked her chronometer on her wrist, then knocked once before stepping into the room. She smiled as she zeroed in on [member="Dunames Lopez"] and offered a nod and her hand as she approached.

"Jaina Morgain, Morgain Industries." She said by way of introductions.

"Dunames Lopez, Star Tours"

The conference room was but one of the thatched-roof houses that the Ewoks usually used to this end for meetings of a village's high-level officials (or whatever is high-level to Ewok bureaucracy; they are mostly called elders). Surely [member="Jaina Morgain"] realized that the First Order has taken good care of the local environment, as she made her introduction. Oh, sure, the Ssi-Ruuk did deal some damage to several Ewok tribal villages, and Bright Tree Village has taken losses of a few dozen residents. But it was in the early stages of reconstruction. The First Order has begun a process for gubernatorial processes, whereby the governor of Endor is going to be an Ewok, and to be selected among the tribal chieftains (much like the Khagan is chosen from the khans among the Warlords of the Core, or the Mand'alor from the Alor'e Council for Mandalorians). Yet she knew that sometimes externally-driven reconstruction processes can go awry if reconstruction processes do not respect local customs and practices. Star Tours may be the company raising the funds, but they subcontract to several entities for the actual work.

"First things first: Ewoks don't always live among the treetops but I hope you can respect the local practices of the Ewoks, agricultural or architectural: that's one of the main conditions the First Order poses for anyone wishing to do business in rebuilding war-torn worlds"

"Of course," she replied, nodding as she shook the other woman's hand, "Morgain Industries tries to tailor its approach to different planets, much as we tailor the genes of our crops to produce a maximum yield in each field." That might seem like an odd way to phrase it, but Jaina was a trained geneticist, and that sometimes shone through her business woman exterior. She looked around the hut and smiled before turning back to Dunames. "To cut to the heart of the matter, what type of aid can Morgain Industries help with? I understand that you have a hostile species causing the First Order trouble, though more than that I am at a loss I'm afraid."

"The Ssi-Ruuk you mean. But this is not about the Ssi-Ruuk: they have retreated away from the hex altogether. The Ewoks would probably appreciate some new livestock from Morgain Industries as appropriate to them because the Ssi-Ruuk attack caused their livestock to be slaughtered. Ewok practices would mean that they are primitive, and whatever crops you bring in here must be harvestable and processable using Ewok tools"

"But the best estimate is that Ewok technology is at best late Neolithic" Virginie told them, especially [member="Jaina Morgain"]. "Late-stone-age if you prefer"

Early metallurgy might have stumbled upon copper, which requires lower temperatures to smelt vs. iron (and the resulting steel that today's galaxy depend so much on, in many, many variants). Surprisingly Virginie had some working knowledge of archaeology; she may be wondering why she didn't go on Ziost alongside Dunames and a certain Sith Lord that they knew under the names Darth Veles, or Avreet. Oh, sure, there are some agricultural companies that supply solutions of the variety the Ewoks need that may not be harvestable using polished-stone tools and Virginie knew it. Essentially redwood was stuff the Ewoks built all their wooden implements from. Catapults, homes, and whatnot, regardless whether said homes are on treetops, at the surface or on lakeshores. Oh prehistory, whatever that means, and the challenges it poses to the First Order when they talk about preservation of species to what extent does Morgain Industries understand them? Dunames thought.

"Also, keep in mind that, if you bring in vegetal crops, that the climate where Ewoks lived would essentially amount to a climate where redwoods can thrive"

As she listened, Jaina pulled out a datapad and began to make notes. She noted the request for livestock, adding a sprite to research native Endorian livestock and their importance to Ewok culture. She then noted the low level of technology, adding a second search sprite to go through the Morgain catalog to pair the appropriate vegetation and genetic specifications. She had climate data from the shuttle that had deposited her on the ground. She made note of that and had the pilot schedule an overfly of some villages to get specific weather data. Then she looked up, asking her questions.

"Is it possible for myself or some of my techs to get soil and vegetation samples from the areas around the target villages? That would help me have the correct vegetation types and genetic modifications zeroed in." She paused a moment, looking into the middle space as she thought. "Also, what is the time table you would like us to work in?"

"It is best not to expose the ecosystems to undue stress so the delivery of these implements must be gradual"

"Probably 3-4 months, perhaps 6, would be acceptable to the First Order. The First Order Environmental Agency wishes that Ewoks' natural habitats be preserved to the best of the possibilities afforded to us, given the above considerations. But the Ewoks would probably have no objections so long as care is taken not to damage the ecosystems when the samples are taken"

What if the Ssi-Ruuk attack was itself an undue ecological stress as Virginie put it? She knew about prehistory all right, but her knowledge of ecological stresses was very, very limited. She had an idea of what one such stress was but no more than that. Surely [member="Jaina Morgain"] would actually know what ecological stresses are and not just because Dunames knew very little about ecology beyond the concerns raised by starship operation and waste disposal.

Jaina nodded as soon as the point was starting to be made. "Yes, all of Morgain Industries relief efforts take into account the ecological stresses. That is why we wish to take samples, so we can tailor our wares to the ecosystem."

"Six months is beautiful. We can have genome samples for the First Order Environmental Agency to look over in two, then we can have a mobile agricultural station moved from Luthien while we do the first growth. The installation of foodstuffs and fauna will be gradual, and we have environmental scientists monitoring it the entire time. If you would like to have a First Order liason oversee the whole process, that can be accommodated as well."

"Mr. Braunfel has the expertise to work on environmental disasters, he's a person you should keep in mind when contacting First Order authorities for environmental reclamation regulations"

Robert James Braunfel did have one call from Dunames, when she was detained over Quintas for illegal dumping of hazardous waste, even though said waste had one catch: the safest way to dispose of them was dumping them into a black hole. Most other hazardous waste could be disposed of in dry casks or other such implements, where the waste is contained inside a turadium container and also filled with inert gases, which is later sealed using duracrete, and such things are later dumped in asteroid fields whose mining capability has been exhausted so they are shaped to look like asteroids. Plus she was often asked by various parties to transport such dry casks to uninhabitable planets, like gas giants or atmosphere-less planets. But this isn't about hazardous waste: it is about ecological reclamation. [member="Jaina Morgain"] knew that such work wouldn't be easy, nor instantaneous, and Dunames, too.

"But yes, I think we can agree on the terms of reclamation. In fact, part of the money will come from Star Tours and the Ewok Preservation Fund it administers. When can we expect the contract to be drafted?"

Jaina nodded, then turned fully to her pad for a moment, typing quickly, but with efficient movements. After a few moments of this, she presented Dunames with the pad. On it was a contract, fairly bare bones without any room for hidden clauses. It pretty plainly stated that the First Order, Star Tours, and the Ewok Preservation Fund agreed to pay <insert reasonable amount of credits here> for services by Morgain Industries. The contract goes on to stipulate the services as 1) Appropriation and resettlement of genetically appropriate livestock which will be in keeping with aboriginal customs and traditions, 2) Genetic sampling of local flora and soil, 3) Adaptation of high yield crops farmable by roughly iron age implements and farming techniques, 4) Continuing ecological stability testing for 3 years after the first initial planting/reaping cycle, and 5) Installation of a small system of monitoring satellites, fully operable by the First Order, that will continue to monitor the local ecology and alert Morgain Industries and the First Order to any irregularities.

"There you go. I try to keep our contracts as bare as possible, keeps them flexible and unable to hide secret charges." She said with a smile.

"Much better. I have seen my share of contracts that were convoluted beyond belief, which could spell trouble; at least you appreciate the First Order's clarity when it came to business"

To Dunames, rebuilding Endor's ecosystems is key to ensure the viability of the Moonlight Cruise and the Endor Express, even branding the Moonlight Cruise as an eco-sensitive adventure. To Virginie the line farmable by roughly iron age implements made her cringe, but she restrains herself, especially since, to Dunames, neolithic or iron age both mean primitive technology on some level. To be fair, there was little difference between the farming implements of the iron age and the late neolithic ones: they still use animal-powered implements, and possibly horse collars, or whatever their equivalents are in terms of local wildlife. While being an implicit acknowledgement that Morgain Industries is dealing with a primitive species, high-yield may not mean the same as it would under cutting-edge, space-age agricultural practices, and usually is climate-dependent, that much Virginie knew. But the rest of the contract checks out, and so Dunames proceeds to sign the contract on the datapad.

"There you go"

"Excellent, I will contact my headquarters and start the process. I have a couple environmental engineers on my ship, they will go about collecting samples over the next few days. I'll tell them to be careful of the Ewoks, and to follow any First Order directives." She said and held out her hand to shake. Her mood was jubilant, as this was the largest scale contract they'd had as of yet. With the signing of this contract, she'd be able to advance Morgain further into the Galaxy. She'd have to have two farm ships sent out once they have the samples prepared, but she could start cycling up bigger and actually subbed farm ships once this contract was under force.

"Thank you very much."
