Breaking The Pit

Sol watched his grandmother as she pulled the trump cards from the small bag. They were an item that he had seen and even used before, albeit only with his mother and grandmother since he was incapable of using them on their own. One did not travel with Silencia for over a century and not see those particular artifacts, especially if one was her great grandson. He however did not smile at their appearance, instead he grimaced. He did not like traveling using the trump cards, they made him sick every time they used them. His stomach churned at the thought of having to travel using this particular method, though it was quickly settled at the thought of returning home.

Halcyon Citadel had been a place they had often visited and even stayed at, he remembered the large corridors fondly and the jungle outside of the fortress itself even more so. He smiled at that nostalgia and then nodded to his grandmother.

He did not want to push Silencia for answers, he knew that she would not take that too kindly. Sol however was determined to find out more information about his father. He needed to, he had to know what he had been to the Empire, if his heritage could give him a leg up on his future goals. He frowned slightly, getting lost in thought. Finally he snapped his head up again, regarding his Oma with a smile.

Sol quickly realized that she was of course Queen here, and that she would not be leaving this place along with him...at least not for any significant length of time.

“I suppose I wont have you to train me then.” Sol said still smiling, obviously talking about his new affiliation to the force.

The Sith Master smirked at her great-grandson and shook her head, "Not just yet, Soliael." Always so eager to learn, he was, and it made her quite proud of him. Lifting a hands towards the boy she beckoned him take it with his own, and as he did that familiar surge of power erupted through his veins and permeated his every cell. Blood Trail. Fold Space. Ancient and forgotten magics ... so few members of the galaxy today were capable, even aware of these arcane instruments. But Sol knew these sensations just as well as he knew the warmth of the Onderon sun on his face or the caress of deep space cold across his skin. This is how they'd traveled during those decades of darkness when the realm of technology lay shattered and torn. Fuel had been rare but this power? It never quite left.

Blackness enveloped him. His entire being twisted and stretched, skewed by the threads of time and space as all the galaxy moved around him. He could feel her hand in his still, grip ever strong and steady as it always had been. Whole worlds passed them by too quickly to see, but he might feel their presence at his core. He might touch upon a memory of a hundred years ago on a day spent learning lessons or escaping certain death. His life rippled outwards, drawn into the tempest of the existential where once he had landed upon a moment in time that might've changed the course of history and as quickly as that movement had come it was suddenly gone again, leaving behind an unknown ghost, a faded shadow of what might've been but never quite was.

The hand was gone.

The darkness withdrew.

Soliael Devin Talith stood at the entrance of an old stone citadel lightyears away from Kuat.

He was alone, but only for a moment.

"Master Talith," a breathless voice behind him of a loyal Acolyte of Knowledge, "welcome....welcome home."

Soliael stared at the woman for a few seconds, his eyes adjusting to the bright sunlight. He heard the strange woman before he saw her. He was blind for a few seconds as the sun shone brightly into his face and seemed to dig into him. The Sith frowned slightly as he covered his eyes and slowly adjusted, a wave of nausea coming over him.

He quickly held up a single finger to the woman and twirled it around. The servant immediately spun on her heel and faced away from Soliael. The Sith immediately placed his hands on his knees and entered a sort of hunched position, he nearly threw up several times as he took in deep controlled breaths. It took him about a minute or two to settle himself, he hated traveling like that. After another few seconds Soliael finally righted himself, standing up straight and speaking to the acolyte in a fairly controlled voice. “Thank you.”

It was not words one really expected from someone like Soliael, but they were ironically heard quite often. The woman simply nodded to him, a mixed look of divine inspiration and absolute worship.

Quickly Soliael and the woman began to walk towards the front entrance of the palace, finding themselves in the doorway in no time at all.

Soliael would be in the company of the Acolytes and Citadel occupants until nightfall.

As he sat down for his evening meal in the private solar of the Masters Chambers another arrived at the entrance. Sol might feel it upon the Force, he might not. It was rare that Quietus ever traveled under cloak or guise, never having felt a need to hide herself from anyone. Her arrival was quite sudden, hinting to her own means of travel, and it did not take her long to make her way into the inner halls. Here the Force Master was a God, almost nearly literally. Having taken the planet under her reign centuries ago, her legacy as the former Sith Pillar of Knowledge, Beastia of all Beast Clans and Governor of Onderon was simply too strong to forget. It was because of her that for nearly a hundred years the planet of Onderon knew peace between it's two main groups of inhabitants. While Iziz saw the largest production of technological advancement and economical growth, the Tribes had flourished and their people's honor, strength, courage and ferocity had spread across the galaxy. At one point in time Onderon had been one of the Sith Council's strongest footholds ... but that was a long time ago.

And only the very few privileged people would know of her continued presence. The most loyal of subjects to the Pillar of Knowledge had stayed to pass on the legend.

"We've indicted twelve more into the fold," she was told as she ascended the spiral staircase up the levels to the private Masters chambers, "we would be most honored to have your approval. I am certain you will be pleased."

Following the sensation of her son's presence, she entered the Solar without much affair, stripping off layers of sodden outterwear. Judging by the heavy scent of earth and blood she'd been staying on Dxun again.

"You will also be interested to see the latest news from Iziz. Riots have broken out in the military sector. Leadership is failing ... Lady, this is the chance you have been waiting for."

Silent as she always was, the woman gave the Acolyte a strained stare, heaved a deep sigh and motioned for him to continue talking as she pulled a chair directly next to Sol's and took a seat, slumping against his shoulder and resting her head there, wet hair dripping onto his fresh robes.

Good to see ya, Kiddo. She patted his arm with a yawn.

Soliael had been sitting there for quite some time watching the bustle of activity within his mothers palace. He found that he had no palate for food at the time, something was eating away at him. He frowned slightly as he sensed his mother approach, it was an odd sensation within the force...one he did not like. The force was still entirely new to him so he could not pinpoint exactly where his mother was, for all he knew she was half way around the world...it didn't really come as a feeling, but more of an instinct.

He pondered this, and guessed that his mother was near.

Finally after another thirty minutes Soliael heard foot steps behind him. The instinctual feeling in his head got stronger and a pressure began to fill in his mind until finally his mother plopped herself down at his side. He felt her head rest gently on his shoulder, and then the warmth of her voice in his head. He ignored the wet feeling on his shoulder, and simply enjoyed his mothers presence for a few seconds.

After years in the darkness, after entire decades spent without the comfort of his family, after an entire human life time of Misery. Soliael finally felt at home. Here with his mother on Iziz, here he was at home. A smile grew on his face, and then finally he spoke. A warmth filled his voice, one of genuine happiness. "I have missed you too, Mother."

The warmth didn't escape her. Quietus closed her eyes and smirked, patting his arm again but this time with a bit more force before sitting up abruptly and shoving wet hair from her face.

That's enough of that, then - the mute signaled to the Acolyte who had, up until that exact moment, continued on talking about news from Iziz. Signing to bring in a meal, the Acolyte was quick to dismiss himself and send in the servants. It was all rather streamlined. They knew Quietus and they knew what to expect from her when she returned from her journeys. Food was always on the list.

She dug in, taking several bites of meat and a drink or two before dividing her attention.

Tomorrow we're going into Iziz. We may need to clear some garbage, I hope your tenure at the pit has kept you sharp.

Soliael smiled for a few more seconds, and then his mother moved away. As soon as the affection had come, it was gone. He smirked slightly at that thought, knowing how...fickle his mother could be. His smile continued as he watched her eat for a few moments, he still had no appetite. Food was not appealing to him at the moment and instead he decided to sit in silence. Then his mother dropped a bit of a bombshell on him. He raised an eyebrow as she mentioned Iziz.

He was well aware that his mother had once ruled Onderon, this palace was proof enough of that. Though he had not expected her to venture into the city, as far as he knew she had not been there in quite some time. “Iziz? Retaking your throne are you mother?”

Soliael was not being serious when he spoke, to him his mother had always been rather listless when it came to events of the galaxy. Of course it had not always been so, he knew this but he could not imagine her trying to be...active within the galactic scene again.

As soon as he said the teasing words however he realized something. The servant had been rattling off facts about Iziz, the acolytes had been out in massive numbers in the palace. A frown formed on his face...could she really be?

“My skills are fine.” He said finally after pieces in his mind fell together.

Chewing her meal, Quietus glanced up at her son at his question. As he wavered over his own meaning so, too, did she over a faint sneer. The inking enough to make one second guess their humor, but faint enough to wonder. She never was one to divulge plans to anyone because, for the most part, Quietus didn't have plans. She had instincts. Her instincts were telling her to go to Iziz - where she went from there was yet to be seen.

The woman returned to her plate, filling it now with fruit and chewing it with vigor.

"My skills are fine."

Another glance this time, but there was no humor in it. Those pale green eyes of her stabbed at him, unwilling to believe these things without proof. We will see, won't we?

Oma tells me you are ready and she is probably right, she nodded, but I will pass my own judgement.

Soliael stared at his mother again. He knew she was a subscriber to the “i'll believe it when I see it” Mentality, but The pit had not been kind to him. He had spent decades killing killers, murdering rapists, and just surviving. It had not scarred him, not in the least. His nature prevented such silliness from happening, it had however sharpened his skills to a fine razors edge. Soliael was an excellent fighter, even without the force, and now he didn't need to worry about the latter part.

Still he frowned slightly, displeased at his mothers doubts of him. As any child did Sol had an intense drive to please her, to earn her pride. Even after two hundred years that need was still very much there.

He decided to suppress this feeling and instead gather information from his mother, He had only recently returned to the galaxy and he was still fairly ignorant about what was going on. Quietus likely didn't know much either given her...unattached attitude towards the galaxy at large, but at least she hadn't been in a supermax prison for the last seventy years.

“Oma tells me you have been traveling the galaxy with a fleet of Vagrants.” He started at what he knew, at least that was simple.

There came that strange smile again. She looked to her son, gazing at him with an edge that said she was not pleased he'd been told these things, but clearly there was nothing to be done about it. Silencia was ever more indulgent when it came to information, only so much to the point that he often got far more from her than he did from Qui. Even just that little bit was more than she would have said.

Her smile broadened, Yes, the mental voice replied finally, from time to time I have been. To keep an eye on things.

Quietus stared at him a bit longer, looking pensive, choosing her words wisely as always, It would interest you to learn that your Great-Great-Uncle Vascious is still alive. I found him not so very long ago.

Soliael looked at her for a few seconds, Silencia had also mentioned Vascious. He had never met the man, though while going through the old archives that his family had he had read much about the man...and heard a little from both his Oma and Mother. Soliael admired him greatly, and part of him wished to meet him. He knew that he could learn quite a bit from the man. The young Sith made a mental note to track down his uncle and introduce himself at a later date.

Slowly however he turned to face Quietus, scooting himself in the chair ever so slowly until he faced her completely. The smile that had been on his face quickly disappeared and turned into something new, something much more serious. It was a face that was a mix of curiosity and stern determination, not one often seen upon Soliael. “I want to know if someone else is alive as well.”

That was a stupid way of beginning this, but despite himself Soliael was rather nervous about the question he was about to pose.

“My Father.” As soon as the words left his mouth Soliael regretted saying them. It was too soon, he was pushing his mother too far. Yet a voice inside of him knew that this was the right thing, he knew that he needed to know of his father. He needed to learn about the other half of his family tree.

With a tankard raised halfway to her lips the Force Master gave pause as the words left her son's mouth. Grip tightening around the mug she felt a sudden and unsuppressed well of anger singe her veins. The cup and it's contents turned to stone in her hand and she left it to fall. It felt against the table with a resounding crack, resulting in a further unfettering of reality. The table, the plates, the food, all grew aged and rotten, tarnishing and spoiling before crumbling into a massive pile of black sand.

Soliael's seat crumpled beneath him into ebony grit.

Quietus, already standing, stared at the black dune now slowly shifting across the stone floor in a cross breeze from an open window. Jaw set, green eyes blazing, she turned from her son and walked out of the room without a word. Glass footprints burned into the sand was all she left behind.

If he chose to follow, she would be gone before he could.

Quietus left for Iziz upon the back of a skreev before the barest of traces of sunlight filtered through the horizon. She did not wait for Soliael and gave no indication she wanted his company. All signs were clear that he had, indeed, pushed her too far. The day passed slowly. It was a hot mid-summer sun that baked the jungles and rose steam from the sodden forest floor. The air was thick and humid with the barest of merciful breezes. The Citadel Acolytes went about their daily tasks, sweat soaking through their robes and beading on their brows. Beast Riders with bronzed, tribal-marked skin came and went, their mounts of varying breeds and statures. Flying beasts flocked lazily through the air, making way for the lake to the west where they might sate their thirst.

By the time the sun began its descent a thrumming of life had filled the lands. When the moon had risen the air was alive with the call of the dragons and the drums of the Tribes. Quietus did not return that evening.

It wasn't until the following morning that the horns signaled her return. She flew in upon her skreev, landing in the southern courtyard just as the gleam of a silver speeder pulled through the entrance gates. Quietus was not dressed in the tattered robes Soliael was accustomed to seeing her in. She wore new robes of black and pale green and had a distinct lack of dirt or blood anywhere on her figure. Turning her steed over to the wranglers, the Master moved to speak with the man driving the speeder. He was of pale complexion and short, shock-white hair with saffron eyes hidden behind a set of shaded lenses.

"Lord Talith," a Servant spoke from behind the man, wherever it is that he was, "Master Quietus has returned. You are requested in the courtyard with all your belongings immediately."

Soliael was not exactly surprised by his mothers response to has question, in fact he had expected something far harsher and more...damaging to himself. Instead however everything about them turned to dust, and he fell to the ground. A slight frown was on his face as the chair below him turned into nothing but blackness. That was all the reaction that came out of him, and then he began to fall. Before he could correct himself Soliael found his butt hitting the ground and his arms locking into place to stop himself from falling anymore. His bare palms struck the ground of the dining hall and in that instant the force rushed through him.

Soliael was greeted with a vision, a memory of the dining hall, one that could not easily be forgotten. Three people within the hall, two women, one man. All three had been incredibly powerful in the force one, the man had been near death. The vision shook Soliael to his very core. It showed him the words they spoke, and it showed him their face. His Oma was there, the fiery redhead and her stern look of disapproval towards the man. His Mother, sitting quietly on one side of the table. That was no surprise since of course the room could not hear telepathy.

Then there was the man, Soliael did not recognize him though there was something...familiar about him. The vision continued for a few more seconds. The Man spoke, his words like a twisting snake. For a few more seconds Sol watched the man entirely stunned. It was his father.

Suddenly the vision cut off. The room returned to normal and Soliael found himself sitting within the dust of the furniture that had once been here. He frowned, unsure of what had just happened. What had happened of course was Psychometry, a gift from his fathers lineage. He did not know this however, and so he sat quietly within the ruin, contemplating and thinking.
~~
The next day did not hold his Mothers return, and so Soliael simply wandered the Citadel. He relieved his families memories, wandering about the palace grounds and exploring in the nostalgia. It was a relaxing day, perhaps one he had needed after six decades in prison.
~~
Finally on the second day his mother returned. He could sense her far off in the distance. There was no smile on his face this time. He knew that she would likely be upset still, and he doubted that he would receive any answers on this day. Soliael had contemplated the vision he had had, and he was now certain that the half dead man had been his father. He had also determined that the vision had happened recently within the past few years.

Unfortunately those answers had only yielded more questions, ones that were unlikely to be answered. Soliael frowned as the Servant spoke to him asking him to gather his belongings and head to the courtyard. The Sith looked at the servant inquisitively. He had no belongings. All he had come here with were the rags he was wearing as clothes. Shaking his head Soliael simply took another change of clothes from his room in the citadel and threw them into a rucksack. He threw the bag over his shoulder and began to walk towards the courtyard.

As he wandered into the southern section of the citadel the frown was still on his face, there were too many questions.

Quietus was already in the driver's seat of the speeder by the time Sol exited the main citadel hold into the courtyard. The blond-haired man was standing beside her door, hands clapped at his back and a smug look upon his face as he watched the Talith son stride towards them.

"Devin Shamalain is it," said the man aloud, brows lofted behind his shades, "a pleasure indeed. Never once thought I would lay eyes on a child of Quietus yet here I stand profoundly amazed. I would shake your hand but I've only been out of stasis for a week and I'm loath much physical contact."

Quietus leaned over from her seat to open the passenger side door, signaling for Sol to join her.

Soliael walked into the courtyard and gave the man an odd stare. He had no idea who the person was though his mother seemed quite familiar with him. The Sith Frowned slightly, but gave the stranger a polite nod. When he mentioned Stasis Soliael's ears perked up slightly, that was a clue. This man was likely someone from before his time, someone his mother had been close to at one point.

“The pleasure is all mine.” Soliael said quietly and respectfully then he continued “Though im afraid I did not catch your name.”

As he spoke the Sith slipped into the door his mother had opened, he assumed that the man would be joining them and thus they could continue the conversation, otherwise what he was doing was terrible rude.

"I am Lord Domos Virago of Arkania, better known here as Darth Volden," the man swept into a graceful bow before standing upright again and taking a step back from the speeder as Quietus keyed the engines to life.

"I am certain we will meet again, but for now I have several hundred years to catch up on. Until next time," he waved them off and made way for the Citadel entrance, several Acolytes bowing and following after him.

Quietus brought the speeder around and steered it through the courtyard gates, taking the road down along the mountain pass, heading east towards Iziz.

As they hit a cruising speed she gave a sigh and looked to her son, He is dead, Devin. Your father is dead. Whatever it was that had happened in the last two days seemed to clear a roadblock for Sol. Her spirits were as high as they had been in nearly a century.

Soliael gave the man a respectful bow of his head as they departed. He would have to remember that name, Volden. As soon as the speeder took off Soliael began to wonder where they were going. His mother had said nothing of that and neither had any of the servants. He assumed it was Iziz, though last time he had made such an assumption it had turned out to be glaringly wrong. Slowly the Sith began to chew on his lips, then he once again heard his mothers voice in his head.

Soliael had been so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn't noticed his mothers demeanor and the sigh she let out. He heard the words, and then suddenly he snapped back into reality. The clockwork machinery in his mind came to a glaring halt, his thoughts ground to a stop and immediately became floored.

For but a moment he felt sick, nausea overwhelming him. A part of him had known his father was dead, perhaps an inkling through the force or just plain intuition, but he had known. He gave his mother a look, not angry, not sad, but disappointment. He watched her for a few seconds, and then finally answered her. “How?”

It was a question he kind of already knew the answer to, his father had been a Sith, and had likely been killed by Sith, but Soliael still wanted to know.

I do not know, was all she offered in reply to that question. There was little in the way of emotions within her son that escaped the empath's notice, but she chose not to act on them. Offering him comfort was the last thing she intended to do. Solace for a thing like a father that never was made little sense - as little sense as fear ever made to her anyday.

He visited me a short time before and told me he knew it would happen. It was really just a matter of time. That was months ago ... I knew him intimately enough to notice the absence of his presence in the galaxy. He is gone, of that I am sure.

Would she miss him? That was difficult to say. Saul was a curious, strange man at the best of times and it was his quirks that held her interest - not his power or his corruption. The simple, subtle things like his sense of adventure and his seeming lack of fear. In that way they had been a great match, Quietus only lamented that he'd not been present in her life during her prime. The things they could have accomplished together, the possibilities of their matched abilities ... it was probably for the better. Likely they would have succeeded in breaking a good many things in the galaxy.

His name was Saul Talith, but he was known as Darth Moridin. It would be better if you did not mention him at all - his legacy was a self-serving one of making bad decisions and powerful enemies.

Quietus looked to her son unsmiling, There are so many reasons why forgetting about him is in your best interest. You have so much more potential than he ever did because you are not fated to walk in his shadow - it was never in your path. I wasted so much of my life, Devin, so much of it walking in my own father's shadow to no end but disappointment and failure. Not because of my own lack of abilities or strength, but because of his inability to see more than just himself. You're lucky because your body and your mind do not carry the permanent scars of your father like mine do.

Soliael listened to his mother quite carefully and as her words reached his mind he knew that she was right. As soon as she had said the word Moridin Soliael made a small connection, it was difficult to walk the galaxy for two hundred years and not have heard of Darth Moridin. The man had been something of a legend before the four hundred year darkness, and apparently recently he had become even more so. The Young Sith frowned at his mother as she begged him to forget all about his father.

His father by from what little he knew was a Sith Lord, and a great one. He must have been powerful, and there must have been qualities even his mother enjoyed about him, his existence was proof enough of that. He wanted to learn more, he needed to know more, but a part of him wanted to do as his mother told him. He wanted to forget.

But he didn't know how quite honestly. He had been after this information for so long that forgetting all about it seemed impossible, even now he wanted to know more, he wanted to ask his mother more. Though he knew that would be a bad idea. Finally after a solid 5 minutes of complete silence he spoke.

“Did he ever know about me?” It was his final question, the last he would ask his mother about his Father. He would dig into him himself of course, Soliael was not one to let it go. Still, he could feel the pressure from his mother to do so and a piece of him wanted it to end there.

No, there was little pause before she answered, no he did not. Had he known he would have tried to use and corrupt you. Would have ruined you.

There came another sigh, this one edging on aggrivation, though it wasn't directed at him.

I want you to remember something, Devin. Regardless of what else you may seek after the name of Talith, you also bear the name of Shamalain. You already have the skills and the tools you need to follow the legacy of our name, we raised you for it. Ours is of power, wisdom, strength, intelligence, cunning, balance and enlightenment. We are not self-serving creatures, we are self-fulfilling - we serve the bigger picture. What we cannot do is tell you what that bigger picture is, you have to figure that out on your own. What we can do is help you once you do.
