OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: For more background and stuff for Vran’Ti
  • Canon: No
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Links: vranti, Vran
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Borvolix, “Revenge stem”
  • Origins: Bioweapon
  • Other Locations: No
  • Classification: Weaponized Fungi
  • Average Growth Cycle: Spore - Rooted - grown - outgrown - repeat.. Time depends on the size of the host.
  • Viability:
    • Requires: Bio-matter, dead, or living. Must have at least some moisture.
    • At temperatures above 120 Fahrenheit or 48.9 Celsius the Fungi will begin to rapidly dry out and overheat, at which point it is vulnerable to movements which can cause it's ability to grow to be stunted or halted entirely.
    • At temperatures above 200 degrees Fahrenheit or 93 degrees Celsius it will began to experience a burning effect which will kill it, but will not spread to the entire plant and is only localized.
    • Borvolix can experience a Frosting effect at 0-1 degrees Celsius or 32-38 degrees Fahrenheit. The effect is a hardening of the Fungi and a stunting of growth. At this point it is fragile and can be damaged by movement. But is not necessarily dead right away. If it is warmed up, and wasn't damaged during the freeze, it may still survive.
    • If however it is very rapidly frozen, the sudden change can kill the Borvolix due to the speed of changing materials.
  • Description: Borvolix spores are miniscule and usually completely unnoticed. In the rooted phase it has thin filaments which often are ignored even through body scans, and do not hurt or cause damage yet as they are two thin. In the grown stage it has reached and begun to form in the brain with thicker growths. In outgrown it has overused the body and is now just a mass of fungi which releases numerous spores before dying off as it finishes the rest of the body and leaves only spores and dead matter behind.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average Height: N/A
  • Average Length: N/A
  • Color: Tends to not have a noticeable color, but if it could be removed it often appears grey or brown.
  • Nutritional Value: None
  • Toxicity: Not technically
  • Other Effects: It infects easily, do not consume or touch.
  • Distinctions:
  • Very hard to notice as it grows through thin filiments.
  • Grows fast
  • Uses spores to spread.
  • Spores grow, generally, to the size of around an inch when getting closer to the full grown stage. There can be multiple spores in a single body if the organism is large enough to necessitate it. An average humanoid will typically only have one or two actively growing spores, but may have many meant for spreading.
Strengths:
  • The process: Borvolix, or just called “Revenge stem” is an old bioweapon of Vran’Ti originally created by a rebellious group trying to utilize the advanced science of Vran’Ti to their advantage by creating an unnoticed fungi which would spread, and would only be noticed by the time it was too late. Borvolix doesn’t show up on the surface. It hides itself inside of animals as deep as it is able when it is still just a spore, which has slow mobility and is extremely small to the point most cannot see it. From there it grows to around the size of an inch, and sets off thin root or filament like structures. Then it begins to grow its “brain” inside of a creature, if it has one. This “brain” usually is the only thing first noticed due to the thinness of the filaments/roots not causing much damage on their own. The false brain often grows overnight big enough to control the conscious actions of the body, whether or not the mind remains intact. However by this point the person is very likely already lost, and would require incredible surgical precision to save due to the sensitivity of a brain and how easily the spore could simply replant. It forces the body to go in large crowds, where minute stems that usually only make the skin feel rougher than normal, spread the fungi to others. This process however only lasts a mere two days, for humanoid size species, before it will cause rapid growth in the body distorting it beyond compare. Sometimes making it useless due to potentially injuring the legs and limbs in the process. By this point any part of the brain that still existed is likely completely destroyed. And the body lacks any thinking ability. It only moves around. It is however easily spread, as the growths began to burst with the fungi which have by this time grown through its muscles and tissue to considerable greater extent, and start spilling the spores to any nearby. An average body will only last another week before it’s fully corrupted and the only thing left is the fungi itself, which typically is reduced again as it starves. All that remains are spores, which can live up to 30 years before dying out.
  • May not be noticed by scans until the brain stage, may depend on organism.
  • Spreads extremely easily and quickly
  • Spores can live 30 years on their own
  • In order to destroy the fungi inside someone before it kills them, it would have to be searched for or found by very good scans as it may be seen as simply broken veins, or not seen at all due to their small size, then the original spore or spores must be located and either poisoned (which, depending on the patient, could endanger them as well) or removed. Removal requires a very large and careful procedure and attempting to poison the Fungi may still be dangerous, as if it does die and remains in the body the body still has to deal with the pieces. In order to poison a growing or grown Fungi they must poison the original spore or spores that the filaments grow from.

Weaknesses:
  • Require intense care: The spores spread extremely easily and as a result they are kept in a facility that is kept under constant military supervision while experts ensure the spores never leave their containment. Even with Vran’Ti’s incredible medical technology, if the Borvolix went unnoticed long enough it could still threaten the lives of numerous Vran before it could be eradicated again.
  • In order to use the spores it is either going to be obvious that a type of weapon was used, due to the necessity to wear full body equipment, or it would involve the person almost certainly getting infected themselves and either sacrificing their own life for the cause or requiring treatment. Not to mention the difficulty of removing it even when it has been found. It is extremely difficult to actually use without getting infected as there's always the possibility some has spread onto the clothing. Requiring numerous stages of cleaning and often the clothing being worn being able to handle extreme heats so that the spores might be burned off, just in case they managed to get on.
  • Spore can die in rapid freezes.
  • Spores become vulnerable to any movement in temperatures warmer than 120 Fahrenheit or 48.9 Celsius and colder than 0-1 degrees Celsius or 32-38 degrees Fahrenheit. This endangers their structural integrity.
  • At temperatures above 200 degrees Fahrenheit or 93 degrees Celsius it will began to experience a burning effect which will kill it, but will not spread to the entire plant and is only localized.
  • Due to the inch sized spore when it began to fully spread, some may experience discomfort inside their body depending on the location of the spore. Usually it is ignored, but if it prompts a more thorough scan the spore may be mistaken for cancer. Which could prompt surgery, and then find out what it is
  • The Spore can be poisoned, which must be done at one of the spores that is spreading the filaments. If the poison works, than it may kill the whole Fungi connections, leaving only dead parts which may need to be taken care of by surgery, especially in regards to any around the brain.
  • The Spore may produce larger stems merely by accident, this is not extremely common, but occurs enough that it is notable. This is when a stem shows up outside the skin like the others, but is clearly not simply a hair. They are most common to show up when someone clenches their hands, fingers to fingers, a lot, as it may mistake them for being connected and so continue to grow. Since this is an early stage, before the host is completely certain of death, it is possible this can prompt doctors to look more into it.
  • The strange behavior to need to go out to be around people can be recognized as unusual depending on the personality, as it tends to appear obsessive, and not always natural.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Borvolix was created by a Vran Scientist who had recently suffered the loss of his family members in a rebellion attempt against the Vran’Ti Vo Ni of the time. He put his knowledge to use creating a bio-weapon meant to go under the radar. Then he released it by infecting several animals and releasing them in public places. In merely two weeks the entire population of Vran’Ti had been reduced by 20% before they were able to eradicate the disease through numerous surgeries, and sometimes, completely annihilating infected towns and then carefully burning the remains to ensure the death of the spores. Although they technically both overcame, and then managed to continue to use the bioweapon themselves, Borvolix would be forever feared as a Bio-weapon. And the scientist, who shortly after vanished entirely, claimed it was only the stem of his revenge. Whether or not the scientist actually was able to do any more damage is unknown, as no remaining information can be found on him by the public and it’s theorized he may have died of his own experiments.

This is a very well done submission overall, my only comment is with regard to this rule:

Species possessing extreme/unique powers, abilities, or attributes are advised to be balanced with suitable strengths and weaknesses. When creating your species consider actionable PvP related weaknesses to balance PvP related strengths.
Weaknesses:
  • Require intense care: The spores spread extremely easily and as a result they are kept in a facility that is kept under constant military supervision while experts ensure the spores never leave their containment. As written, what you currently have is that the virus is too good to be contained and the other only anticipates a single way that this could be introduced into a RP thread. I'd recommend strengthening the weakness section, as this is a very powerful submission in a PVP setting. It's essentially an invisible, airborne bioweapon. You mentioned elsewhere that fire destroys the spores/fungi, so that would be a useful item to note here. Similarly, the effects of frost on the fungus is notable. What temperatures is the fungus vulnerable to? Near freezing? Freezing? Below freezing?

Finally, I'd recommend nesting the 2 bullets underneath Viability with an indent so that it's clear that isn't a blank section, like this.
  • Viability:
    • Requires: Bio-matter, dead, or living. Must have at least some moisture.
    • Can be burned or frozen but may not die if frozen.
Let me know if you need help with that.

Thanks!

Ok, I actually made a lot of clarfications now, and some alterations now. I specified it's tempurature limitations, and I also changed it now so that there is a stage during the spread the host can still be saved and noticed. I added an extra sign of the spore that is not universal, but occurs, so players would be able to use that. (Accidental over growth of stems outside of skin, usually would just make skin feel rough, now they would be noticable due to their length.). I also added that the Spores could potentially be poisoned, if poisoned at the growing Spore, but may still require removal it would just not be able to spread, grow, or have its own effects anymore.

I also noted that the strange behavior may be recognized depending on the person. And made the Spore, when its reaching its larger stage, is around an inch which, depending on its location in the body, could be noticed as a pain or mistaken for a cancer growth. Removing it at that stage wouldn't stop it, but it would mean that they were aware it was not a cancer if they tried surgery or more in depth scans. So they could move to the other attempts to destroy it.
