Bjorn Einarson was born on the world of Danarius, the home of the Danar people. The Danar are humans, only separated and isolated from the rest of the galaxy since the Gulag Plague in their out of the way star system. Here, using starships without hyperdrive capabilities, the Danar raided and fought each other across the six habitable planets of the star system. Danarius, the poorest and least populated of all the worlds, was home to a collection of tribal groups ruled by Earls. The lands of the Earls were poor in quality, barren in resources, and hostile to all life, but this only served to make the Danar people stronger. They became warriors of necessity, and they raided the rest of their home system regularly to secure the food and resources needed to maintain their people.
Brjon's father, Einar Tolarson, was a sworn warrior for Earl Ubba, a prominent leader of the Danar people. He served as the captain of one of the Earls raiding ships, a frigate lacking any form of faster than light travel. He was a successful raider, and he brought much blunder and resources back to his Earl and family, ensuring their continued survival. However, he proved to be too successful. Earl Ubba grew jealous of the increased attention and acclaim Einar was earning for himself, and acted to curb any potential uprising against his power. One night, the Earls men surrounded Einar's hall, barricaded the doors, and set it aflame.
Bjorn, on a hunting expedition with his brothers, returned just in time to see the final moments of the burning. His brothers, older than Bjorn, rushed down and threw themselves on the shieldwall of the men and women surrounding their home. They were cut down, and Bjorn, the last survivor of the family, was sold into slavery to tell the tale of those who resist the Earl. He spent the next decade of his life in slavery, though not to Earl Ubba. He was sold off to a minor raiding ship that held no ties to an Earl, the lowest rung of society of the Danar culture. This insult burned in Bjorn as he grew older, grew stronger, and in time, too strong.
Following a unsuccessful raid that saw the death of half the ships crew, Bjorn led a slave revolt that killed the remaining crew, and secured the ship for himself. In command of a ship, Bjorn began to enact his long awaited revenge against earl Ubba. He attacked other minor raiding vessels, wiping out their crews and freeing the slaves, securing for himself a small fleet of vessels that he took back to Danarius. On a storm racked night, he landed and led his army of freed slaves to the Earls settlement. Rather than plundering and destroying it, Bjorn challenged Earl Ubba to single combat.
They fought, and Bjorn won. He was wounded in the battle, but in the end he stood triumphant as the former Earl Ubba's soul went to the next world. Now, Bjorn is the Earl of his own lands, and commands a fleet of ships nearly unrivalled among the other Danar tribes. But rather than settling himself into the life of those who came before, he has turned his gaze beyond the star system. A madman among the Danar has claimed to have invented a faster than light starship design, and is offering it to the highest bidder. The price is exuberant, but Bjorn has agreed and paid for the vessel, and now begins his plans to lead his armies out across the galaxy.
