Private Biogenetic Curiosities

I study the specimen as it moves around in the chamber, making mental notes on it's behavior and changes. Indeed this specimen is a unique creature of it's own; much like Mister usher is. And I wonder just how long the effects of the biomolecules will last. A part of me wants to extend my hand inside of the chamber to see if it recognizes me by smell, yet I refrain from doing so. Afterall there is always the chance that it could bite me. Living on New Cov has taught me how deceptive any flora and fauna can be.

I turn my observations to Mister Usher next. Still his curiosity is linked with fear and I cannot help but feel a little saddened by it. If the specimen did regain freedom; would the same happen with the body he is in now if he was injected? Would each part of it become liberated if the source had biomolecules introduced into it? And if so, what sort of consequences would that bring? Is it even worth the risk?

"All right. Let us return to my office. There is no need to rush into this, for the unknowns are too broad and the risks are profound. I do not seek to destroy you. Let that be made clear to the rest of you. We do not know if this reaction is temperary or permanent. So please, shall we go and return to our refreshments?"

I gesture to my office doorway for us to depart, not completely aware if I am hiding any hint of worry well enough. But I am trying.

Let that be made clear to the rest of you. We do not know if this reaction is temperary or permanent. So please, shall we go and return to our refreshments?"

The director brought up a good point. The husk nodded in agreement and followed Ms. Terello. "Do other uses of Biomolecules wear off with time?"

As Mr usher parsed the undertones of her words, he assured "Don't worry, it was in the name of discovery and all that, I bear no grudge nor suspicion of you wanting to destroy me."

As they walked, the feeling of guessing at what the specimen must be thinking still ate at his consciousness. "It didn't seem hostile - but rather... The volatility of the reaction makes me think either the biomolecules 'cured' or otherwise halted the connection to me, and the affected biomass chose to spread that affect. I don't think they could replicate biomolecules exactly, but the effect it had on the part could have been spread by its own will to the whole? It definitely seemed to spread by touch." Mr. Usher hypothesized aloud. "If this is temporary, maybe I'll learn more if it wears off and I can reconnect with it safely for its memories."

The biomolecules infused in metals surely did not wear off in time. Of that I know for certain. His other inquiries made me think, however. With medicines it was difficult to tell if the biomolecules wore off or if they merely became a part of the person that they were introduced to. Those questions indeed involve further study.

I am glad at least that Mister Usher holds nothing of these experiments against me. For I surely would not want to have him as an enemy. More than likely I would be very easy to kill, given his incredible abilities that I am only just beginning to understand a part of.

I remove my lab coat and hang it back up before leading Mister Usher out of my lab. And as I do so I listen to him as he thinks out loud. Only when he is finished do I respond with my own thoughts. "Biomolecules cannot be synthesized. But biologically within a host? That is entirely possible. And just how long the effects last, I am not sure. But I will document and study the specimen very closely so that we may have some answers. And if it proves to be permanent? I will keep that knowledge just between us, for it should not fall into the wrong hands. I mean no disrespect when I say that I am unsure of how many enemies that you have, but it is fortunate that New Cov is not a popular destination by any means. So the risk there is minimal that our experiments will leave this laboratory."

The outcome of the tests would be valuable, and the ego of Mr. Usher was glad to have found an acquaintance. Inside the nether-network of consciousness it grappled with the idea of freedom from itself, or destruction of itself, or if there would be any percievable difference.

"I suppose traditional means of communication are probably easier to work with until the, uh, little guy in the research lab gets better. If he gets better, or maybe worse, depending on its viewpoint." It was unlike a collective of minds to ramble. Or was it? Maybe rambling was more natural than one uniform consciousness.

"If you need anything, you know how to contact me. I may have, devoured a little nest of my own elsewhere in the jungle."
He had thought nothing of it at the time, but then again, most life seemed hostile to him before this anyway.

"Which reminds me - if you have a list of any endangered species on New Cov that I probably shouldn't be eating, perhaps I ought to get a copy of that"

Mr. Usher suddenly cared a lot more about extinction, realizing he himself was not immune to such a fate.

As an afterthought, Mr. Usher pulled free another lamprey-mouthed finger, wrapping it in a tissue and setting it on the desk.

"In case something happens to the first one, or if you need a control sample to work from."

The mostly-human presenting husk retrieved its hat.

"Thank you, director, for the time and the study. It has been illuminating. Don't be a stranger, yeah?"

While Mr usher was in no hurry to leave due to the unique ability to be in multiple places at once, he didn't want to wear out his welcome - and they both had a lot of research to perform.

I worry for him, really. What he - or rather all of them are going through cannot be easy. There are times when the unknown is scary.

"I will send you daily reports, and bring it with me when I travel. Fortunately I have a little mobile lab that travels with me, and the little specimen is not big enough to be cumbersome." At least the specimen remembers him. But how long will that last? Will it slowly forget over time? Or will it always be connected?

To his question of endangered species on New Cov, I shake my head. "There are not any endangered species that I am aware of. However our biomolecules are harvested from the flora and fauna here. So you might want to be careful about that. Might I suggest that you find yourself an abandoned location inside of one of the domes? There you may find other species not native to New Cov that should be safer for you to consume."

I am still unused to someone removing body parts from themselves so readily and easily. But I hide that well enough. Perhaps one day it will seem completely natural to me, I am not sure. I take the napkinned sample in hand and give Mister Usher a bow of my head. "Thank you, I will treat it well." I might even introduce the two specimens together to see what happens, but not yet. There are many other unknowns that need to be resolved first.

At least the Hive mind does not wish to consume me. That would be a nightmare.

"Have a good day. We shall keep in touch."

I walk him to my office door and then close it behind him after he departs. I then turn directly on my heel and head straight back into my laboratory. There is much work to be done and it is fascinating.
