Braze seemed to recognize the situation. He himself hadn't been able to speak for a while after having his jaw shot off by Maple Harte Maple Harte . Reaching into his gi top, he pulled out a small device and set it on the table, switching it on before sliding it toward her.

"This is a vocoder," he explained. "I programmed it with my own voice...if you want to use it."

To demonstrate, he typed out the word Hello. The device chirped it back in a younger-sounding version of Braze's voice.

"Well… I'm here to try and earn some credits," he went on lightly. "Got myself a rather hefty debt, only about ten million." He offered a faint smirk. "It's complicated."

Then his gaze shifted to Jacen Breska Jacen Breska .
"He's here because he's a gambling addict," Braze remarked dryly. "Because he doesn't wanna quit. Wanna bet again for another week Jacen?"

Jacen looked over at Braze, a renewed sense of purpose in his eyes. He didn't hear anything else, he just heard the challenge. A challenge he happily and eagerly accepted.

"Another bet. Creds for another week. Deal. Yes. Let's go." He jerked a thumb back towards another sabbac table.

"This is gonna be easy," he muttered to himself with a smile as he rose and approached the table.

Templar’s eyes tracked Braze’s hand as it dipped into his gi top. Her body went rigid. Right hand curled into a fist. Weight slightly shifting forward. Readying herself if a surprise attack were to come. As his hand withdrew a small device. The tension faded away. She watched as he slid it across the table toward her.

Listening to his explanation. The Relic’s eyes narrowed slightly. Studying the vocoder device. The demonstration made her freeze further. It was… fascinating and unexpected. When the Jedi Knight had offered it to her. A faint twinge of guilt slipped in. She was ready to strike him. Yet here he was offering her something that could help her speak. Templar couldn’t take it. Not after that.

Her right hand lifted, palm outward, fingers relaxed pointing at Braze. Tipping her head slightly to one side and dipping her chin in a slow nod. Slow and deliberate. Rotating her hand palm up in a gentle, open gesture. Making a sweeping motion once toward him. I couldn’t possibly… but thank you.

The amount echoed in her head. 'Ten million.' Templar’s back straightened with the thought. Surprised. Blinking once behind the visor. And she thought she had it bad. Waking up broke with no memories.

Templar’s attention followed Braze’s gaze toward Jacen Breska Jacen Breska . Slowly, pointing from Braze to Jacen. Back and forth. Her thoughts clicked. Ah… so he’s indebted to you. Her helmet rotated looking at Jacen now. Marking him as a gambling addict as well. Seeing how he just challenged Braze once more.

Jacen’s energy was easy to read. Already accepting the challenge himself. Templar turned her helmet fully toward Braze. Gauging his reaction. If he would accept or decline. She lifted her thumb toward herself. Hand shifting to two fingers. Pointer and middle. Raising to her visor before swinging them toward both Braze and Jacen. The fingers curled into a thumb rubbing against fingertips. The universal sign for credits.

I will watch you both gamble.

Never truly participated in gambling before, never learned the games. Templar knew of the stakes. It would either make or break someone. Usually break. But watching these two? That could be useful. A learning opportunity. If not, entertaining.

"I don't need it any more. You seem to need it more than me. Some people get implants to neurologically connect to these kinda devices but that's a little scary to me. " He offered seemingly having an intuitive understanding of what she meant.

Braze let the cards ripple between his hands in a smooth cascade,

"Alright, Sabacc's simplel until it isn't. You're tryin' to land as close to twenty-three or negative twenty-three as you can without overshooting. Sounds easy, right?"

He snapped the deck back together with a neat clack and started idly bridging them again.

"We'll ante in, we'll bet, and you'll think you've got a winning hand… until the Shift decides it's your turn to cry. That's when the deck swaps one of your cards for a new one whether you like it or not. Sometimes it's a blessing. Usually it's not. Hit twenty-three exactly, that's called Pure Sabacc, beats anything on the table. But if you're feeling lucky, there's the Idiot's Array: a zero, a two, and a three. Rarest hand in the galaxy, and it trumps everything. Just don't get too attached to your cards. Sabacc's got a sense of humor, and it's cruel."

He slid a card across the table with a wink.

They were brought delicious little samples of cheese cake and a nice steak dinner for Templar.

"I've got a winning system this time," Jacen said as he sat down and waited for his cards. His face hardened, trying to portray nothing as he looked at his cards.
A -19 in his hands.
It's a good start. He looked up and met Braze's eyes. "I'll take another" He said with a smile, opting to chase that -4 to win the game. When the third card came, a +9, he fought the urge to frown.

A -10. It wasn't impossible, but it wasn't the best. He forced a smile, "Your go."

With her leather gloved hand, Templar picked up the small device. Turning it over once. Looking back at Braze. ‘A kind soul.’ Closing her fingers around it. Bringing her fist to the middle of her chest. Templar dipped her head in a slight blow.

Thank you.

Templar listened as Braze was explaining the game they were about to play. Sabaac. Words rang true, it sounded simple. But nothing was truly simple. The mention of the word Idiot’s Array, her brow rose beneath the helmet. ‘The rarest hand in the galaxy?’… and named for a fool. Ironic. The idiot trumps everything. If only that logic applied outside of the cards.

Arrival of food caught the Relic off guard. Immediately recognizing the steak. Meat seared and seasoned. Its aroma familiar. But the second plate made her pause. Pale golden crust at the edges with a white creamy center that had a glossy sheen. It looked soft. Sweet perhaps? Templar hadn’t ordered it. Slowly typing with one gloved finger on the vocoder. The device spoke in Braze’s youthful voice. “For me?”

Her eyes behind the visor turned towards the table. Watching Jacen in his ‘element’. The man was very much into the game. Either it was confidence radiating off him. Or was in just plain denial. Claiming to have a winning system. Templar’s head tilted at that. ‘As if such a thing existed in Sabacc. Or any gambling game. Either he was a fool or he truly believed in his own luck.

Who knows… maybe the Idiot’s Array may be his calling.

Braze smiled at her. " Yes for you; The cheese cake is very sweet. " He chirped lighting up having seen her make use of his gift.

Braze smirked as he laid his final card down, the winning spread glinting back up at Jacen like it knew who owned the table.
"Guess chasing that -4 wasn't your best idea, was it?"

His voice was smooth, almost purring with amusement as he raked the chips toward himself.

"Don't worry, " he added with a flash of mischief, "I'll spend your credits wisely. Maybe even buy you a drink… if you're nice."

It would seem some how Braze knew just what Jacen was up to.

Jacen's eyes went wide. "How do you..." he paused and his eyes narrowed. "You're one of them aren't you?" He scoffed and shook his head.

No wonder he lost. This Braze was cheating! He could see what Jacen's cards were!

He looked down at Braze's hand. A -11, a -8.

"-19...." He stared at the cards. If he didn't take an extra card he would have pushed with him. But no, he had to go for it, had to get another card.
He slammed a fist down on the table, "Karkin' son of a bantha kriffing.....SSSSSHIEEEET."

DRINKING

The light smeared against his eyes. Even closing them wasn't enough—his eyelids were too thin—and he'd had enough of watching the room tilt with his vision. He couldn't shut them any slower. Every time he closed his eyes, the sudden shift in lighting sent a jolt of pain through his head. Too fast.

Despite the cool air of the casino, he was sweating—sweating through what had once been a sleek, elegant suit, now damp. His tie hung loose, a concession against a creeping sense of asphyxiation. Dripping from his dehydrated lips was a red liquid that burned a slow fire in his chest, the same liquid that filled the wine glass between his fingers—a glass he valued more than himself at the moment, doing all he could to ensure not a single drop spilled.

The music was too loud. The air, too warm. And for once, he didn't care who was watching. His stance sagged, his balance swayed, yet there was still that glint in his eye—the kind that could shift from soft to sharp in a heartbeat if the night turned ugly.

Then, with another turn, he found himself keeling over a table—the one occupied by the trio. The wine glass tipped, red liquid spilling across the surface, most of it flowing toward "Templar" "Templar" .

"Oops. My bad, everyone." His words slurred into each other like a frothy mix of inebration.

Templar couldn’t remember the last time she had a proper meal. Let alone something… sweet. “You didn’t have to.” Slowly typing into the vocoder. The youthful echo of Braze’s voice replying on her behalf. “Thank you once again.” She eyed this cheese cake. It puzzled her. ‘Sweet cheese?’ Templar was curious to find out.

Carefully picking up the utensils. Templar began to cut the steak into neat smaller pieces. Her gaze was still on the Sabacc game that was going between Braze and Jacen. Brow lifting beneath the helmet as Jacen suddenly accused Braze. ‘One of them?’ Head tilting slightly. The fork she held pierced the slice steak. Tapping out a message on the device. “What do you mean by, ’one of them?’

So far, Jacen’s winning system seems to be very good at one thing. Winning its way into losing. Movement at the edge of her vision caught her attention. Templar’s head turned just in time to catch a figure stumbling towards their table. He was disheveled and sweating. Wine glass in hand. The man leaned too far, tipping the glass.

Red liquid spilled across the table. Instinctively Templar kicked her chair back, immediately standing up. The wine just barely missed her. Dripping off the table’s edge. Templar glanced down. ‘The food…’ The steak, ruined. The cheesecake, spattered. Sadden. What a waste.

Her attention snapped back to the newcomer. Observing in silence. He was either unwell or clearly drunk. Hearing his words, it seemed more like the latter. Subtly shaking her head side to side. The table was a mess. Templar typed out “Got any napkins?”

Kai'el Brat "Guardian of the Light"

Braze stood up as the mess of wine splashed about and tried to save the cards. He set them aside and glanced over at who had just—oh... It was Drystan. Funny, he didn't seem to be doing well. He subtly attempted to reach out and observe his Force presence, searching for any mental shields, looking to read surface thoughts. Fetching a napkin holder, he flipped it upside down and opened the back to take out a stack at once.

"That's okay... We can get you a new plate," he offered, moving to step in front of Drystan, looking up at him. "Why don't you just... take a load off." He guided Drystan toward the spot Braze had previously been sitting before moving to clean up the mess.

"Been enjoying your newfound freedom?"
he asked, concern threading through his voice. Was Drystan taking the fall of the Core this hard? Perhaps he was trying to escape his darker thoughts by drowning his sorrows. A pang of guilt rose up as the fun seemed to melt away, reminding Braze of the very real tragedy he himself was trying not to think about.

Jacen stayed at the table, his hands on his head as the overwhelming feeling of despair washed over him like a dam that hadn't been maintained. He stared only directly into his losing hand, and then Braze's winning hand. He was cheated. That's it. That's all it was. He had to try again, he could win, for sure.
Then someone walked up and spilled all over the table and Jacen recoiled and pulled away. Jacen eyed the puddle that formed then met Braze's eyes again, "HEY WE GOTTA DO IT AGAIN RIGHT? Get a pitt boss! Who knows what the cards said!"
