Beyond the beginning of the journey

Sorel Crieff

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
Sorel noted the alert and so pocketed the Holocron. “First things first,” she said and headed to the cockpit.

There she considered the two planets in front of them. “Which one first?” she wondered out loud, before turning to Lynn. “OK, being a Jedi is not all about waving a saber and using the Force. It’s often about applying our mind. So, if this were your mission, what would you do first?”

It wasn’t a test per se, but development. Just as valid as showing someone how to use Telekinesis.

Lynn looked between the two planets. If she were to go by appearance she would be picking at random. Her Master would want more than random. She followed her training and closed her eyes and began meditation on the two planets. Her new bracelet making that easier.

First thing she felt was turmoil and that was on both planets. If she were to compare them they seemed equal on that, so something else she needed to search for. She began to focus to see if any had killer intent. She winced when she focused on the planet on the left. It hit her like a migraine.

She opened her eyes, "There is a greater disturbance on the left planet. I sense, an army. Though I sense manipulation, a puppet master controlling both plants, maybe an ambassador from one to the other?" She turned to her Master, "If I were leading, I would go to the left even I feel it the hardest of the two."

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
Sorel remained calm and patient. In her experience, most tests were not presented by someone else, but were internal challenges. And that’s what differentiated those that aspired to be Jedi Knights and those that achieved it.

There was an old Jedi mantra that when you know why you’re not ready, then you’ll be ready. This was often the case. Self-doubt was always the enemy of the Jedi but in coming to terms with why something was not a success, a Jedi could then overcome the shortfalls.

Lynn was no doubt wondering how to choose and might be experiencing some self-doubt. But Sorel knew she had the answer, she just had to find it.

For Sorel had a personal mantra as a Master – to provide the questions and not the answers. She allowed her Padawans to find the truth for themsleves, she was not there to tell them that reality. Her role was to ask the right questions and at the right time.

So she sat silently as Lynn internalised the request. And once she heard the answer she smiled. “Good,” she said simply. “The Force is an ally we often overlook in matters like these. Your instincts have guided you well. Do you want to set a course?”

The only thing that was the problem which her Master's internal reasoning was self doubt. Lynn was Not one to doubt herself. She was a realist and did know her limitations so when she said she couldn't do something she was being realistic. If she doubted anything it would be the power of the Force.

The Force was a curious thing to her. It was the light and dark side and was always at was with itself which made no sense to Lynn, but maybe over time it would make more sense; such the nature of wisdom.

She smiled happily and leaned forward to begin setting the course. Then she gripped controls and shot the ship forward, maybe too fast, fast enough yo make you think she maybe a Skywalker. She giggled, but before hitting the atmosphere she slowed down to gently make the transition and then radioed the hanger requesting permission to dock.

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
Sorel sensed it. Perhaps it was because Lynn was her Padawan? Maybe it was simply due to the fact that she was looking for it? Or maybe, just maybe, the Force was at play here — helping the Jedi Master to assist her Padawan on her journey (the metaphorical one, not the literal one).

But regardless of the reason, Sorel believed that there was doubt. Perhaps Lynn did not doubt herself, or even the Force. Maybe it was the connection between the two? Sorel chose not to press the point. Like most things of note, the truth would surface sooner or later and at a time where it was opportune to do so. For now, Sorel focused on the task in hand.

“Tell me,” she asked in a quizzical tone, “Have you ever heard of the Harch?”

Lynn got the clearance code and began sending the ship to the hanger she was given. She pulled back on the stick a bit to bring it up a little and slow the fall as she gently set the ship down on the hanger floor. As she began the ships cool down after it's trip she turned to her Master and thought on the question. Could she mean a door? Not, that would be a Hatch, but what was a Harch? She sat in silence trying to find the answer in her memory, but the more she searched the more it escaped her. It was becoming clear that Harch was a word that she had never heard of before. She bent her head slightly, then looked back up to her Master, " I don't believe I have ever heard of Harch before, what is it?"

Sorel smiled. It was not a surprising response.

“Well the two planets are inhabited by a species that have descended from the Harsh. These came from a planet known as Secundus Ando. I’m curious if you’d encountered the sentients before as they aren’t human or near-human. And if you’re not expecting to see them, they can surprise.”

“You see they look a cross between a human and a spider. They have a large-fanged mouth between two prominent chelicerae, above which they have six red eyes arranged in a semicircle. The two lowest eyes were larger and roughly twice the size of the four smaller eyes. They walk on two legs and have six arms, with the second and third set of arm protruding from behind the first pair rather than directly above or below them. I think they are in some way related to the Aqualish.”

“So I trust you’re not frightened of spiders.”
