Beat on, do the Drums of War

Mahan paced the deck of one of the new planetary assault carriers the Imperial Remnant had rolled out. The Grand Admiral had taken the only three the Remnant had finished from the shipyards to hold a training exercise over on of Kamino's numerous moons. It was an uninhabited moon, but it could support life. Along with the three planetary assault carriers, he had brought two Tyrant-Class star destroyers as well as four Bulwark-Class escort frigates to provide the necessary fire power to engage in the preliminary orbital strikes on the planet. Mahan wasn't in charge of the operation, he along with three other admirals were here observing the work of a Vice Admiral Raadus, the man placed in charge of this whole training exercise. Mahan was anxious to see this through, he had high hopes for this ship class.

Mahan left the bridge to the conference center, where the other Admirals awaited him. The fleet had exited hyperspace only three hours earlier, marking the beginning of the operation in only two more. Being a Grand Admiral was not always as grand as they made it out to be, but Mahan did not find it entirely tiring. Entering the conference room, Mahan saluted the three flag officers inside. The occupants stood up and returned his salute with salutes of their own. Mahan began speaking, "Admirals, I'm glad to see all of you in good health." Admiral Gular replied first, "As we are to see you in such a good state." Next spoke Admiral Kaal, "Grand Admiral, have you any opening opinions about today's operation?" Mahan spoke confidently, "Albeit, I wish we could try and test our capabilities to launch a shock attack on the planet, but a week long beach head invasion is a more than acceptable challenge for these new shiny carriers." Admiral Gular nodded in agreement.

For nearly half an hour, the council of flag officers discussed the possibilities and potential for the new planetary assault carrier class. Grand Admiral Mahan, and Admiral Gular spoke for the most part of the meeting, despite the age seniority of Admiral Hast'ik over Gular, and the amount of favoritism Mahan held for Admiral Kaal, the only other alien in the room. It concluded when Admiral Hast'ik recieved word that he was needed elsewhere, most likely to ensure the logistics of the operation would run smoothly. Feeling they had covered the neccessary material, Mahan decided to finish the meeting. Once Gular left, Mahan looked to Kaal, alone at last, "It has been months since I saw you last, Shana, where was it, deep space off of Kamino?" Kaal cracked a small grin, "I believe so, Butch. Always eager to see me?" Mahan looked towards his feet, "You are one of great importance to me Kaal, maybe the only one." Kaal sighed, "You flatter me too much." Silence held the air for a few moments, "Would you like to...?" A lustful look overtook Mahan's face, "Why of course my dear." They exited the conference room, and walked to Kaal's temporary cabin aboard the Preemptive. The Togruta woman began to unbotton her uniform as Mahan entered, checking outside to ensure nobody followed.

A while later, and the two had finished. Whilst Kaal lay atop the sheets, Mahan had already begun to adorn his uniform once more. Kaal did not protest his sudden departure, she and him had gone through this before, things were strictly professional, withholding one another fro their duties was strictly off limits. Once Mahan had slid on his boots, Kaal also put on her uniform, fully rested for the day's portion of the week long exercise. Mahan, fully dressed, nodded to his secret partner, "I will see you later then, Shana?" Kaal, not fully dressed replied, "Of course Butch, of course." Satisfied with her answer, Mahan left her cabin, making sure no one saw him. Mahan let very few dictate what he did and when and where he did it, but Kaal was one. Not only did she have his heart, but she was an authoritative woman, much like himself. How else could she have obtained such a high ranking in the Imperial Remnant. But, Mahan did long to see her personally again, it was one of the few pleasures in his miserable life.

The training exercise had been going on for over two days now. In that time his "private meetings" with Admiral Kaal had increased to half a dozen times, his body was becoming too tired to function at some points. He needed to stave off the exhaustion and focus. Mahan needed to evaluate the performance of these carriers, these planetary assault vessels would become essential in providing a home designed ship for the Imperial Remnant to subjugate more systems. These carriers would no doubt prove to be vital in operation ahead, giving the Remnant an advantage over enemy forces. If he let one mistake go unnoticed, it could really hurt him, and the Navy, later.

Mahan sat upright on his bed on the third night, his legs touching the ground. His cabin was dark and silent, not another soul inside. His fists were clenched as he took deep breathes, a recent report had angered him. Only five minutes earlier did he receive a message from the Captain of the Retribution, the second Deterrent-Class Planetary Assault Carrier apart of the fleet. One of the catapults had malfunctioned while launching a fighter, causing mayhem and rendering one of the six hangars completely useless. It was far too early to determine the cause, whether it was a design flaw, or the maintenance of the catapult had been screwed up, either way it would not look good on the progress report. Mahan felt foolish for producing three prototypes rather than one, before putting the entire line in production. The Moff council could string him up for this, maybe even stop the entire class. This could become a catastrophe, but Mahan would try his best to ensure it didn't.

Mahan examined the damage, the catapult was a huge mess of warped metal and blackened substances. Over eight crewman, and one pilot had died, with thirty seven being injured. Shrapnel had been launched all across the hangar, damaging many of the starships inside. Mahan was relieved to find out, it had not been the catapult, but that fighter it was launching that cause the malfunction. Now all he would have to do is approve a report, and sweep it under the rug, so the Moff council wouldn't take wind of it. Mahan wouldn't let a perfectly good carrier be taken away purely on the mistake of others. Finished, Mahan returned to his shuttle.

The operation was wrapping up, and it had been a resounding success. The launches, besides the one catapult failure, had been exemplary, and the orbital strikes accurate. The thousands of troops had landed safely and quickly secured the area of the droid defenders, with minimal casualties. The only deaths were the ones in the hangar of the Retribution, and two at the crash landing of a Delta-Class shuttle on the planet surface. The results from this operation would no doubt accelerate the speed of approval for the carrier in Kamino, and within the month would production start of the first non-prototype models. Mahan was proud of their work, and Vice Admiral Raadus would not doubt be receiving a high commendation for his execution, landing him a spot to lead the first Orbital Landing Task Force. But there was one last thing Mahan wished to complete, and it was far from professional.

Mahan met with Admiral Kaal on the planet surface, which was abandoned save for the two shuttles that brought the flag officers down there. The two had ventured off nearly two miles away from any peering eyes, to have a private conversation. Kaal looked across the wide valley they were perched over, its barren hills quite a sight, "So Butch, you wished to speak with me?" Mahan stared directly ahead, fixating on no geographical landmark, "Shana, my beauty, this past week has been exemplary," The Togrutan woman rolled her eyes, "Do not flatter me Mahan, you know I don't fall for any of that sappy poodoo." Mahan took a deep breath, "Yes, well, I think we should elevate our commitment to each other." Admiral Kaal turned to Mahan, "So rumble-tumble isn't enough for your ever expanding demands?" Mahan scowled, "You know what I mean Shana, I'm tired of only getting to see your face in some sort of sweaty blur. We don't have to go public about it, but I want to do something else than just that." Kaal sighed, "I understand, I've felt a small yearning as well." Mahan turned to his lover, "Good then, I want you to meet me at my residence on Rishi at once." Kaal stood up and gave a half hearted salute, "Understood, Grand Admiral." Mahan gave her a kiss, sight so rare, it could destroy Mahan's reputation as a cold blooded murderer.

After some board meetings, and a few hyperspace jumps, and a long solo ride across the hot world of Rishi, Mahan had arrived home. Mahan was a minimalist, his home consisted of one floor, and three rooms. Here, he did not wear his uniform, instead he only wear utility pants, like a miner would wear for labour, with his chest bare. The planet was always sweltering, making the decision to wear as little clothes as possible a good one. Despite his nature as one who wished for few possessions, he did have his small cubic home air conditioned, balancing the amount of warmth in the house. Inside one could only find a few chairs for sitting, a stocked mini-kitchen, a Rantok blade on the mantle, and some book cases built into the wall. Other than that there was a beige bed, with only two pillows and a sheet. Admiral Kaal arrived only two hours later, also by speeder. When Mahan opened the door, he saw her not only out of her Imperial attire, but in a lose green jumpsuit and a air speeder helmet. She looked like an average spacer. Mahan invited her in, they had a lot to talk about.
