PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Biodome generator
  • Can link up to cover an adjustable area size
  • Able to adjust internal conditions inside the shield
Strengths:
  • Mobile- The BDS Generator is biodome generator that can be moved. This presents an advantage over other generators because a normal one has to be positioned and then can not be moved from that spot. The BDS gets around this limitation by being only 2 meters tall. It can be easily moved from spot to spot as the need arises, which can let is expand or shrink its effected area to suit the needs of those using it. The generator is also light enough that it only requires 2-3 average strength humans to carry.
  • Desirable- The BDS Generator is a biodome generator that creates a shield similar in concept to that of atmospheric-friction shields used on starships. It can be designed to block all but what is desired from the outside environment. It also contains inside the shield what is desired while allowing what is not to pass through. This means that is can do things such as allow in enough wind to form a comfortable breeze, but stop any harmful sand or dust particles through. It is thanks to this that the environment within the shield can be maintained and controlled. It also can allow for pockets of breathable atmosphere to be formed in places it otherwise could not, such as asteroids.
  • Links- The BDS Generator is designed to connect up with other BDS generators to form the domes. This unique feature allows it to form shields as small as 2 kilometers when two are hooked up to far larger as more are added. Each new unit adds on up to 2 kilometers to the diameter of the shield with the only limitation on the size being how many you wish to hook up together. This ability to link up also allows them to strengthen the shield if more are added than needed for the maximum diameter of the shield being generated.
Weaknesses:
  • Not Alone- The BDS Generator has many strengths, but they also prevent problems. One of these issues is that they are dependent on their link feature. A single generator can not produce a biodome shield on its own, so if two are linked up and one is destroyed or stops working the entire shield fails. This failure due to the link being effects can occur if there is one less generator than the maximum shield diameter being generated requires. This issue can also occur if not all of the generators are hooked up properly to a power source or lose power. The generator will stop working and the shield will go down.
  • Repairs- The BDS Generator also has issues with it's repairs. It requires them regularly as debris being blocked will begin to build up at the base of the shield, which is also were the generators are located. If the perimeter of the shield is not regularly maintained then materials could overwhelm the generator and damage it. Another issue with repairs is the use of silicar in it's design. The material is better of replaced than repairs due to it's nature and this trait carries over to the BDS generator as well. If any of it's silicar parts break it much be replaced with no option to repair in the field.
  • Combat- The BDS Generator might take inspiration from deflector shield technology, but it is not designed to handle combat. It offers very little to no protection from weaponry. The shield is actually more likely to allow a blaster bolt or rocket to pass through unhindered than it is to attempt to block it. This means that while the shield is great for keeping atmosphere in and out that is all it is good for.
DESCRIPTION
With Mandalore currently dealing with major environmental problems, Raxis Independent Designs decided to focus all their attention onto correcting them. Of the many projects proposed one that was quickly picked up was that of a biodome shield generator. Mandalorians are no strangers to the concept, so the project picked up momentum swiftly. After some discussing, the concept settled on was that of mobile generator rather than the traditional stationary one. Some trials and errors later the BDS Generator was born.

The BDS Generator is simple in it's design. The basic design was to create a frame and casing created from layering silicar and reinforced alusteel together. The alusteel kept the weight down so it could remain mobile and also could protect the silicar. The silicar in return protects the alusteel from hazardous environmental effects, such as corrosives, and some of the strain that could destroy it over time. The electronic components are then fitted inside between the casing and the frame so that they can stay protected while they do their jobs. A duraplast layer was then added to the outside of the casing to add further protection for everything contained within it.

The BDS Generator works by locating another nearby BDS generator and linking up with it. They then create the shield between them and maintain it as long as it has power. Each link functions by sensing the nearest links to it within their 2 kilometer range and sharing data with each other. This link is what allows the size of the shield to be adjustable as well as how the shield produced is able to be adjusted to create the desired atmosphere within it. It is also for this reason that every generator must be located along the edge of shield rather than created a bubble around it.

Neat.

So this thing needs 2 to work at all? And 2 of these produce a biodome of 2km in diameter? At first it read as if only one can hold a shield of 2km in diameter by its own.
