Barriers to dogfighting

Star Wars canon (including but not limited to movies) has many examples of dogfighting scenes. Granted, they are highly variable in quality (story-wise), but still they are a part of the SW lore, for better or for worse. From my limited experience of dogfighting, which sadly does not include PC-to-PC dogfights, here are my observations:
  • Dogfighting tends to accrue less drama than conventional dueling or fleeting due to the playing field being much more even
  • Dogfights have a few more parameters over duels, some of which are movement-related, but far less than fleeting (1 craft vs. multiple craft)
  • Sometimes writers will take hits only to their shields
What makes dogfighting so scarce these days?

To be honest, the question is how to make it attractive. As I think the best way doing this, is to improve the theorical damage they can cause. Say like a WW2 fighter. As they could take down the big ships.

with the new movie fighters kinda killed fleeting but I agree a good boost to what they can do would help. Alot of fleeters treat fighters as fodder. alot of fighter people over exaggerate what can be done. They X-wing books give a very good example of how fighters and capitals should interact. the problem as the same as it always is and always will be... hit calling. That is what fleeting always boils down to. In universes like wing commander and B5 a good bomber can take down a capital ship fast one salvo for light ships alot of the time. But there is a flip side to this. ANTI-air tech is insane. Even if you reference WWII. By 1944 ships like North Carolina, South Dakota, and Iowa class BB,s, and MIdway-class carriers kinda deleted air attacks. there will never be a happy medium for fleeting because no two people consider anything to do with fleeting the same way. Some people will ignore fighters. SOme will take damage from them. some will claim they do more damage then what the other thinks they do. Best thing is to talk to your writing partner and get on the same page as far as fighters and capital ships work for that matter.
