OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
SETTING INFORMATION
  • Structure Name: Barkhesh Culinary Academy
  • Classification: Cooking school
  • Location: Victory Point suburbs, Barkhesh
  • Affiliation: Independent
  • Accessibility: Open to the public
  • Description: The campus of the Barkhesh Culinary Academy comprises a few buildings: the main building, where all cooking classes are held, and, for this reason, kitchens make up a significant portion of the space in the building. In addition to the main building, it also features a dormitory, where boarding students sleep. Finally, an indoor 25m pool is used by both locals and Academy students.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • The training kitchens: Students take their cooking courses inside the building, with several training kitchens where students are trained in the art of preparing ingredients, as well as one room for training future chefs in each station of the kitchen brigade system. Together the training kitchens take up a significant portion of the main building's floor space.
  • The dining room: Due to the large student body, by cooking school standards, the dining room is also quite large, and can comfortably seat hundreds of guests at any one time in a formal dining environment. Revenues from the dining room are used to fund the costs of providing the students' educations, to the extent the costs can be covered.
  • The administrative offices: Located in the main building's basement, next to the school's pantry and cold room, the administrative offices are there to not only manage student life, but also the restaurant as operated to facilitate the students' training as chefs. It is also home to the school's souvenir shop, where restaurant guests and students can buy memorabilia from the school.
  • The dormitory: Capable of housing about two hundred students, the co-ed dormitory is a separate building from the main building, with all the amenities students usually have come to expect from a dormitory. Most dormitory residents are off-worlders since most Barkhesh residents that attend the cooking school are day students.
  • The indoor pool: Once again, it's located in its own building, with a 25m pool capable of being used for hippodrome swimming meets, and, in fact, is regularly used for that purpose. It also features a gym for dry fitness training of the students.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Right after the Gulag Plague subsided, the local authorities on Barkhesh realized that some cooking lore was lost among the society and set out to build a cooking school in what was then the wealthier suburbs of its capital. Quickly, it gained a reputation as one of the premier cooking schools of the sector, producing graduates who would go on to become executive chefs at five-star restaurants. By 750 ABY, the administration of the school was approached by the local authorities to promote health and wellness, and so built an indoor pool for the purposes of not only recreation, but also health. Over the years, the school also began to enroll would-be cooks that were student-athletes, although it offered scholarships in only one sport: swimming.

The main curriculum was initially set to last one year, since the Academy operated pretty much as if it was a trade school. The school survived mostly unaffected by the wars between the Galactic Alliance and the First Order, and the First Order operated the cooking school with only minor changes related to the change of jurisdiction, but also flying under factional radars. Meanwhile, it also gained fame all over Barkhesh as a place where competitive swimmers honed their skills prior to making it to major university programs, or to hitting the professional circuit, either on Barkhesh or off-world. It also produced several swimming coaches, including the coach who went on to coach one Varindar Asyt on Dathomir and later on Trandosha, where he briefly became the executive chef of what would become Varindar's first hotel (and restaurant).
