Bad hair day

Vexen sat quite still. It was telling that she didn't reply for a few seconds. She merely shifted in her seat, obviously uncomfortable about something. To start with she didn't know what the world specialisation meant. Ipsy had chattered at her quite quickly and used a lot of long words.

Vexen had only just finished learning to read basic. Even then she was at the reading age of typical girl half her age. She'd lived so much of her life alone and isolated and with no use for reading.

The wraith replayed as much of Ipsy's words as she could and latched onto the first sentence.

"So I suppose it's not that different from reading two people from different places. Like a rodian and a gran," she reasoned. Vexen took another breath and continued, going for what she thought the crux of the question was.

"I used to make people not look at me," she murmured softly. "So I kind of learned that first and it always stuck. Making folk do small things. Micah's thought me how to use the Force in other ways though. And a good bit of fighting too 'cos he's always takin' us places with trouble."

"Exactly!" Ipsy replied, noting her friend's pause. The ashen taste of discomfort filled her mouth as she picked up waves of Vexen's feelings in the force. She realized something in her comments had slightly alienated her friend, as some of the wraith's excitement now seemed stifled and awkward.

"Is everything okay?" Ipsy asked. "I apologize if I made you uncomfortable with my questions. If ever you feel I have pried too much, please say something. I would not wish to cause you distress."

The tiny Amaran's tail continued to twitch, albeit more slowly than before. Her voice trailed off, and was replaced by the gentle clink of plates as Kilf set down their food. Gordo peeked at them over his owner's shoulder.

"Mraoow?"

Ipsy gave him a wave and nodded at Kilf in thanks, then returned her attention to Vexen. Curiosity burned as she wondered at her friend's force skills.

"Why did you not want anyone to see you? Your coat is beautiful and you're so fun to talk to. Although I can just imagine how much funness it could be to sneak around and explore everywhere without getting into trouble. Have you enjoyed training with Micah? I would love to learn from you if you'd be willing to teach me. Some good old fashioned fighting skills would be super useful anywhere."

"S'alrigh'," Vexen replied. She canted her head to one side, her ears were suddenly not as straight upright as before. She shifted slightly closer, lowering her voice to try and reduce the chances of anyone else listening in.

"I lived on my own when I was small. Lived rough. Everyone was just scared of me so I didn't really learn to talk that good. So it just takes me a little to catch up."

She didn't really like explaining it, but it was better that than leaving Ipsy upset. Especially after she'd been so kind.

She gave a subtle shrug. It was a gesture she'd picked up from Micah. "That's why I kept people away. Also because I was normally stealing their food..."

"...Anyway, sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it's very hard. When he took me in being lazy and eating lots was a new thing. I got pretty squishy round the middle. Wasn't easy getting back into shape but I could teach you. I think."
