GENERAL INFORMATION
- Name: Azhvor
- Designation: Non-sentient
- Origins: Vandemar; deep forests, mountain valleys and overgrown ruins
- Average Lifespan: 28–40 standard years
- Estimated Population: Rare; isolated populations across Vandemar's oldest forests
- Description: The azhvor is a massive nocturnal ambush predator whose light-absorbing coat breaks its outline among rain, shadow and dense vegetation. It may remain motionless beside a trail for hours, allowing prey to pass within striking distance before moving. Most victims never see the beast itself—only two pale eyes opening where the forest had seemed empty.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
- Breathes: Type I atmosphere
- Average Height of Adults: 1.4–1.8 metres at the shoulder
- Average Length of Adults: 3.2–4.5 metres
- Skin color: Black, dark grey or muted violet beneath the coat
- Hair color: Matte black, charcoal or deep blue-black
- Distinctions: Azhvors possess low, heavily muscled bodies, broad paws and powerful forelimbs capable of overturning light speeders. Their coat consists of dense, hollow fibres that absorb visible light and scatter common low-light sensors, obscuring the animal's silhouette without rendering it invisible. The skull is wide and ridged, with short ears protected beneath raised bone plates. Males are larger and develop thicker cranial ridges; females are generally leaner and more territorial around denning grounds. Elderly specimens acquire pale scars, broken fangs and grey filaments along the muzzle and shoulders.
- Races: None formally recognised. Mountain azhvors possess heavier coats and broader paws, while lowland animals are darker, longer-bodied and more agile.
- Force Sensitivity: Non-Sensitive
- Exceptional concealment in darkness, rain and vegetation
- Immense forelimb strength and devastating ambush attacks
- Highly developed night vision and patience
- Poor heat tolerance and reduced activity in warm conditions
- Light-sensitive eyes are vulnerable to sudden illumination
- Solitary nature leaves injured specimens without pack support
CULTURE
- Diet: Carnivore. Azhvors prey upon large herbivores, forest predators and isolated travellers. They prefer fresh meat but cache unfinished kills beneath roots, stones or shallow water.
- Communication: Low growls, chest vibrations, scent markings and deliberate claw scoring on trees and stone.
- Technology level: None.
- Religion/Beliefs: None.
- General behavior: Azhvors are solitary and strongly territorial. They establish large hunting ranges centred around caves, ruined structures or dense root systems. Rather than pursue prey over distance, they study trails and water sources before selecting an ambush site. Mothers raise one or two cubs alone and teach them through controlled exposure to wounded prey. Mature offspring are driven from the territory, sometimes violently. Azhvors usually avoid settlements, but individuals that learn to hunt sentients can become persistent and unusually difficult to remove.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Azhvor remains have been found in Vandemarian strata predating recorded settlement, confirming the species as part of the planet's native megafauna. Their shadowed coat appears to have evolved beneath the dense canopies of Vandemar's primeval forests, where direct light rarely reached the ground.
Early colonists regarded azhvors as supernatural manifestations of the forest. Entire patrols vanished before thermal optics and motion sensors revealed that the beasts were biological rather than spectral. Even modern scanners remain unreliable at close range, and specialist hunters continue to rely upon tracks, scent and disrupted vegetation.
The species is protected beyond settled territories, though any azhvor that begins hunting along recognised roads is designated for removal. Such hunts are traditionally entrusted to knights, for an adult azhvor can tear through civilian barriers and conventional infantry with equal ease. Among Vandemarian foresters, a patch of forest that falls suddenly silent is called an azhvor's court. Entering it alone is considered less bravery than invitation.
