  • Personality




    Awnry was named for being difficult, and he has kept the name like a shard tucked in his sleeve.

    He is stubborn, sharp-eyed, and slow to trust. He understands rules, posture, silence, and careful speech. He knows how to lower his gaze, how to stand still, and how to read the mood of a room before stepping fully inside it.

    Beneath the trained manners is a young man with a long memory. He remembers faces, routes, small habits, loose keys, careless hands, and every voice that taught him caution.

    Freedom is new to him. Choice can make him hesitate. He may ask permission for ordinary things, then bristle when told the choice belongs to him. He hides food, keeps small gifts close, and prefers places where he can see the door.

    Awnry can be sharp, suspicious, and biting when frightened. He also notices gentleness in detail. He notices who asks instead of orders. He notices who waits before touching him. He notices who says his name like it belongs to him.

  • Backstory




    Awnry came from the slave markets of Kaas City.

    His handlers marked him for ornamental service and courtly attendance: an attendant trained to stand where placed, speak when permitted, carry himself well, and survive the attention of powerful people. They taught him posture, silence, etiquette, and presentation. They also taught him the cost of hesitation.

    They shaped his manners. They failed to take the stubbornness from him.

    Awnry became known as difficult stock: useful, striking, observant, and inconvenient. He learned the market's arithmetic early. Compliant stock moved quickly. Broken stock lost value. Defiant stock drew the interest of buyers who enjoyed a challenge.

    Braze, known to some as Avarice, found him there and freed him.

    Awnry was given shelter, food, clothing, education, and a place as a ward and student. Braze treats him as a person with a future, rather than a possession with a price. That change is simple to say and difficult to live.

    Open skies, clean rooms, ordinary laughter, and people walking freely through streets all feel strange to him. Lessons are easier when they have clear rules. Freedom asks more of him. A book can be opened. A meal can be eaten. A door can remain unlocked. Learning that those things belong to him may take longer than any lesson written on a page.

    He has left the market behind.

    Now he is learning how to belong to himself.

Physical Description

Awnry is lean and long-limbed, with the narrow, wary grace of someone still growing into a life that belongs to him. His skin is warm brown, his eyes are a clear, cutting blue, and his copper-red hair is usually drawn back in a low tie, with loose strands slipping around his face.

Cleaned and dressed properly, he can look almost elegant: black and white formal garments, fitted boots, careful lines, and a high-collared silhouette meant to make him seem composed. The illusion breaks in the little things. His jaw tightens too quickly. His shoulders carry old caution. His hands hover near his sides as if waiting for correction.

He looks polished because someone made him so.

He looks guarded because the lesson stayed.
