OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Deflector - Provides the standard protections found under all deflector shields of its class. Provides secondary protections also (See strengths).
  • Optimised Emitters - Agrocite Prisms allow for energy to be transferred quickly to where it is needed most.
  • Experimental - Technology is expensive to deploy and maintain, its size and overheads are prohibitive making it unviable for most smaller platforms.
STRENGTHS
  • Energy Converter - Provides additional passive protection through the use of a Conversion Field, reducing the effectiveness of fast-moving Kinetic artillery and missiles. This is roughly 20% efficient dropping significantly with slower-moving objects.
  • Avalon - The deflector shield can be extended to provide extra protection for escort ships within its sphere of influence. Doing so puts greater stress on the system reducing the overall effectiveness of the shield and having a disproportional effect at long ranges.
  • Shield Banks - The Avalon is supplemented by four shield banks, each covering a different section of the ship. In the event deflectors collapse the shield banks provide a temporary boost. In the event the deflectors are hit by Ion weaponry, the shield banks double as a power sink and are drained first.
  • Multi-Cycled Refresh - Shields are refreshed on four interval cycles, these can be modified to improve shield regeneration or shield capacity.
WEAKNESSES
  • Avalon - If deflector shields are extended they potentially expose the ship to close-range engagements as the shields can be bypassed.
  • Batteries - Shield Banks provide a boost but only for a limited time and cannot be recharged while the shields are fully deployed. Shield banks take a day to recharge.
  • Secondary Shields - Generally the protection provided by the Conversion Field is poor compared to traditional shielding. Additionally, the shields remain somewhat vulnerable to ion damage.
  • Reduced Effectiveness - Expanding the shields increases the stress on components, especially when under fire. This proportionally reduces the strength of the shield. Generally, the shields become ineffective at excessive ranges.
DESCRIPTION
The Avalon is an experimental hybrid shield emitter combining elements of traditional deflector shield technologies with reverse-engineered Avali Conversion Fields. Due to its experimental nature, the Avalon is unlikely to see use outside of the bleeding-edge starship design and was originally commissioned for the Summit Class platform. Its most notable feature is extending its shields beyond its hull to offer an additional layer of protection to the accompanying fleet. This enables the Summit to protect not only escorts but damaged civilian ships during relief or search and rescue missions.

Novean Technologies engineers hope that the system might one day be miniaturised by gathering data in the field.

Important: Note that the technology listed is designed and intended for PvE scenarios and cannot be utilised in PvP situations.

Can I just say I hate how it tries to 'fix' formatting and ends up making it a mess -.-

Edit: Ended up rebuilding it, learned my lesson for next time I guess.

It is a very cool technology, and very powerful. I have to ask, do you have any canon references to this? Because I have never seen SW has ever done this technology on this powerful scale. If yes, please link it in the primary source, if not, we'll work a little on the sub.

MANIAC MANIAC -

I do not believe there is a comparable device in Star Wars canon. It marriage of ideas inspired from Elite Dangerous (Shield Batteries) and Star Trek (Extendable Shields).

I am happy to work with you to add / adjust / remove elements. If you want prerequisite techs I can sub those.

I'm going to be taking over this submission.

I'll start off by saying I really like the creativity of the submission. It isn't beyond the realm of the possible in star wars, however there are some concern I have about the potential of this submission in a PvP setting.

Primarily I'm worried about it being used as a means to artificially boost the defensive capability of shields. Take for example an average fleet of Star Destroyers and then give them high or very high defences as a flagship extends its shields to cover them. While, on Chaos, the defender is the one who decides what hits them, and how much damage it causes, the ability of a ship to buff the defences of others has the potential to cause a lot of conflicts.

I don't want to outright deny the submission, however, so I wanted to give you a chance to think over my concerns and see if you can find a way to address them.

Thanks for raising your concerns. I did foresee these issues being raised and tried to alleviate in the submission.

Using your example, while it maybe possible to bolster large Capital Ships the gains would be very minor for much greater risk.

For example, doing it for the whole fleet means your;

A) Exposing the ship to Starfighters or Assault Corvette / Frigates because they are operating within your deflector.

B) Shield strength would be significantly reduced by the sheer volume of coverage. In this case, even with batteries to provide a backup I wouldn't expect Ions or a dozen Turbolasers to have much trouble collapsing a section of the shield basically rendering it useless.

Now of course, you could help protect from point A with an additional layer, but your still giving up an entire defensive function.

To represent this we could assign a hard number to the range or ship size it is potentially supporting.

Ex,

Coverage for a Star Destroyer would be -2 Ratings as opposed to say -1 for anything smaller.

And/Or

Two ships within size limit of 1000 meters.

That way the only SD compatible would be very small, but personally I'd use a combination of the two as the weakness of shield integrity degrading with size is baked into weaknesses.

Sorry for the late reply., it's been a few since I could sit down and give your submission the attention it deserves.

I do like that weakness of the protected area becoming larger but I don't think I fully understand your second weakness. Are you saying that the ship will reduce its rating in order to provide an increased defensive rating to the ships under the umbrella?

An alternative would be a note stating that it doesn't actually have any effect on the ratings but is a roleplaying element if that's what you intend?

No worries John, I appreciate your time and support :)

Are you saying that the ship will reduce its rating in order to provide an increased defensive rating to the ships under the umbrella?

Yes. Your pushing power from your shield strength to its radius results in a reduction in its effectiveness.

An alternative would be a note stating that it doesn't actually affect the ratings but is a roleplaying element if that's what you intend?

Primarily, yeah. The hope was to use it to help shelter disabled/damaged civilian ships from pirates or hazards. So this works for me.

Thank you for the good wishes and your patience.

I have updated the weaknesses to include the points we discussed, I tried to keep it short. Please let me know if more detail is required.
