GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Aurspriit (Glowing Sprouts)
  • Origins: Falmoora’s Underground
  • Other Locations: N/A
  • Classification: Fungi
  • Average Growth Cycle: They sprout from spores that have settled in a spot with plenty of humidity and heat. Afterwards, they almost act like perennial crops. For most of the year, they have a light glow in the dark caverns of Falmoora. However at a certain point of the year, these fungi bloom. In the blooms, the caps expand more, the glowing tendrils from them grow longer, and they grow brighter. When the bloom is over, the expanded cap falls off, and either settles nearby, or gets washed down a stream to some other location to begin a new growth from the spores that would be released after it settles. From the spores, new growth happens, while the originals regrow their caps to collect and store more moisture again. In captivity, this cycle happens the same way, but the bloom caps are harvested by the Falmoorans, and no reproduction really happens unless a stalk dies before it can regrow its cap. There is no definite lifespan of these plants. However, they are extremely vulnerable during the times after the bloom when they have to regrow their caps. They would be less capable of collecting water and storing it, which causes many to die of thirst. As time goes on, it becomes harder and harder for specimens of this species to survive the post bloom times. The common ages of death from these fungi in captivity are around 40-50 years. However, the wild ones may or may not live longer with current knowledge.
  • Viability: This fungus needs a consistent amount of moisture to be present, and gets its energy from geothermal heat instead of sunlight. Due to its small size, it does not need much moisture. Said moisture can come from humidity in the air, or nearby water sources. The quality of soil does not matter for this fungus since all it needs is heat and moisture to survive. This fungus can live for decades in captivity, but it is unknown how long wild specimens may live. No one has taken them from Falmoora, so it is unknown if they would survive well on other planets. Yet, this fungi can be used for food as it is the most popular crop the Falmoorans farm.
  • Description: Small glowing mushrooms with bioluminescent tendrils that come from the caps. They commonly grow off the sides of rocks or old structures in the subterranean regions of Falmoora, or grow in little patches close to rivers and streams on Falmoora. When domesticated, the Falmoornas usually put their groves alongside rivers, streams, ponds, or even water pipelines from the ancient times. Anywhere that has consistent humidity or water presence, they can be grown on Falmoora. For convenience, the Falmooran domesticated groves are grown on stacked rocks so that they are easier for picking when ready for harvest.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average Height: Sprouts can be about 3 centimeters tall, and full grown specimens may be about 30 centimeters tall at most. Granted; many specimens don’t have much of a stalk to speak of if they grow off the sides of rocks, cave walls, or structures. This height is only for specimens that have grown from the ground. The stalks of specimens that grow off the sides of things would be about 4 centimeters long, but their caps are more pronounced to make up for the lack of stalk in terms of water retention and collection.
  • Average Length: The diameter of caps may range between 10-15 centimeters if they sprouted from the ground, or 15-20 centimeters if from the side of a surface.
  • Color: Depending on the minerals soaked up reacting with the fibers of the plant, this fungus may have a white or light blue color to it that gets accentuated with the bioluminescent tendrils that come from the caps.
  • Nutritional Value: It is a common crop of the Falmoorans. The material of the caps is rich in fiber and carbohydrates that allows for a steady food source for the Falmoorans to grow. The taste is rather bitter, and is quite unappetizing to many (especially since the Falmoorans typically eat it raw or boiled). However, the Falmoorans do not mind the taste since it is possibly one of the better tasting foods they have grown on their world.
  • Toxicity: The Aurspriit is not toxic, though due to the severe bitter taste it has, non-Falmoorans may get sick from the taste but there is no actual toxicity to it.
  • Other Effects: The tendrils are commonly used for making healing salves if mashed into a paste. The various minerals within the bioluminescent portions of it help heal and disinfect wounds quite effectively.
  • Distinctions: It is a glowing mushroom-like fungus that grows on cavern walls, floors, or on the sides of ruined or currently existing structures in the subterranean regions of Falmoora. It is relatively small (about the size of small bushes on other worlds), and has glowing tendrils that come from the caps. When in bloom, the caps would expand and glow brighter before falling off to produce spores elsewhere.
Strengths:
  • Common food source for the Falmoorans
  • Glowing tendrils make for a good disinfectant/healing salve for wounds
  • Extremely common underbrush on Falmoora within the Underground of the world
  • Requires less heat and moisture than other fungi on Falmoora
  • Easy to domesticate for the usage of growing for food
Weaknesses:
  • Is extremely vulnerable post bloom without its cap, which is when many tend to die when older
  • Will wilt in sunlight
  • Requires truly consistent humidity which would be difficult to maintain off Falmoora
  • Due to evolving on Falmoora, it may not grow well in other dark areas on other worlds in the galaxy
  • Tastes extremely bitter, which could cause outsiders to Falmoora to get pretty sick in reaction to the powerful taste

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
This fungus has been growing in the subterranean regions of Falmoora since the beginning of life on the planet. It has remained small in order to be efficient with resources between blooms, and to not limit where it can grow as long as there is consistent heat and moisture. Within the fungal forests in the Underground of Falmoora, these smaller forms of fungi commonly act as underbrush in comparison to the Aursklk that grows much taller in the larger caverns. When the great cataclysm that wiped out all life on the surface happened, the Falmoorans that survived because they were living underground found these, and realized they could live off of them. Now, the Aurspriit is the most common crop grown by any Falmooran tribe to this day due to its easy to provide for needs (considering the environment is on Falmoora), and wide availability in the wild. Aurspriit could be found as part of the common Falmooran meals today as the crops would be used alongside the meats consumed in Falmooran cooking as well.
