At the mercy of the rain. [Serian]

The rain had been coming down hard for the better part of an hour. It drummed a constant rhythm on the tin roof of the tiny diner, as if it were knocking to be let in and refusing to take no for an answer.

Irri sighed as she wiped down the counter for perhaps the fifth time in the last five minutes. Patrons were scarce at the diner that night, which was hardly surprising given the fury of the storm that raged outside. Deep ocean blue eyes cast across the windows briefly, lingering on the doorway for a moment. Something teased at the edges of her senses, as if dragging teasing fingers down the side of her neck until she shivered.

Shaking her head, she turned away from the door and gave her attention over to the pile of freshly washed coffee cups. With a practiced motion, she picked up each one and dried it off, before adding it to the pile of its waiting, identical brethren. It took her just a few minutes to finish the task and to realize that all of the cups and glasses were clean and there were none left to be dried.

Folding up the towel she'd used and setting it aside, Irri turned to put a fresh pot of caf on to brew. It was a decent dark roast that she'd acquired a fondness for since she'd been working at the diner. Two of her clean, white cups were retrieved, turned right side up in preparation, when Dax called to her through the serving window.

"Hey Irri...got fresh caf for me?"

The brunette leaned over to grin at her boss. "Brewing as we speak, big guy. I'll bring you a cup when it's done. Want me to start closing up out front?"

"That would be helpful."

The young woman hummed a soft tune under her breath as she went about her work. While the cleaning droid worked on the floor, she went to lock the large double doors.

It hadn’t been raining when he’d first gone out for a walk despite the clouds that had been threatening. He’d come to this place to relax, it had been pleasant so far, but the rain was making things miserable. It was cold, rolling from the ocean like a dark wave, he’d been caught in it with no umbrella. Currently he was taking shelter under an awning, but quickly moved to shelter under the roof of a building. At first all he heard was the storm, lightning flashing and the ominous sound of thunder. Under it though were smaller, weaker sounds, he heard plaintive cries coming from the alley next to him. It sounded like a child and he turned to look into the gloom getting wet.

The alley was clean, mostly boxes, in one of those he Sensed life, three flickering tiny flames to his Vision. He moved over to it and stared for a moment, in the soaked box, slowly filling with water, were three small kittens. He scooped them up and tucked them into his coat not even sparing them a long glance. He’d have done the same if it had been a child, acting first then deciding what to do later. No small creature should be out in this mess and he cursed the person who just abandoned them so. He understood needing to find a way to be rid of them, but there were better methods. One wouldn’t think it, but he hated seeing animals suffer and was actually quite a softie in their regard.

His long coat had plenty of pockets for him to place the wet, miserable balls of skin, bones and fur. The first thing he needed to do was get someplace dry and get them dried off with something warm to feed them. He recalled a diner in the distance and hurried, pulling his coat close and hoped they would stay where he’d put them till he could manage them better. Fortunately it wasn’t that far to walk, but his hair and whatever could get wet by being exposed was. He headed straight to the door only to find it locked, he cursed and rapped on the glass loud enough that it wouldn’t be mistaken for the storm. There were people inside, he could Sense them and this was the closest place he could think of to get what he wanted.

Fingers tugged the fresh pot of caf from the brewing unit and poured two large cups of the heady brew. She inhaled deeply, pleasure lighting her senses at the scent of the rich, dark roasted caf, steam rising in delicate whorls from the surface. Adding milk and sugar to Dax's cup, she set it up on the serving window for him, before returning to her own black as midnight cup and taking a happy sip.

The knock at the door startled her, but at least she managed to not spill any of her cup's precious contents. Setting it down, she rushed over to open it and let the man in, even as Dax hollered a request from the back for her to do the very same thing. They'd had no business that evening, so a single patron, even at closing time was a welcome sight.

A wet, drowned rat look type of sight but with the most amazing crimson eyes...Irri's senses fluttered like a bird in a cage, abilities she hadn't used in months trying to rouse themselves into a useful, wakeful state.

If this guy wasn't a Force user, she'd let Dax make the caf while she ate her cheap, designer knock-off shoe.

"Hey there! Come on in...have a seat here at the counter." Irri managed to say brightly, motioning for him to sit while she slid around the end of the counter and fetched a couple of clean towels for him to start drying off with.

"Can I get you a cup of caf? Freshly brewed...how do you take it?"

He was pleased that the woman didn’t try shooing him away, he would have been rather displeased if he had to invoke his powers to Persuade her into doing what he wanted. Though he was relatively certain that he could have simply talked her into it as well, but it also depended on the amount of resistance he was met with. Only two humanoid lives within the building, no wonder the door had been locked. He studied her a moment and pushed some of his wet hair from his face. “A shallow bowl of warmed milk and, if it is no trouble miss...some tea? Don’t make the milk too warm, just warm enough to not be more than slightly past not cold. Hot tea would be...most appreciated, though I think it wise if I stand here and drip a moment longer. I do have another strange request, I need you to help me dry off a trio of passengers I picked up.

His accent would be very out of place, cultured and precise, tones one would expect from nobility and odd sounding even then. His accent was borne from a time when where he’d been raised had been occupied by the old Imperial empire. Even now his ‘pure’ accent compared to those of more ‘modern’ high culture set him apart. He was polite, almost stiff, but carefully respectful, treating her with the same diffidence he’d have done to a high bred lady. It was just how he was with anyone, but considering the circumstances it might be a bit odd.

He carefully reached into his pocket and with considerable gentleness he held out three tiny bundles of half dried wet fur. The smallest, covered in patches of different colored fur, let out a pitiful mew that made him look at the poor critter with concern. “I know that its not looked on with any favor to bring in animals, but I hope you’d be willing to make an exception? Someone left them in too high a box and it was almost a pool of water when I found them. I refuse to take them back now that the lot of us are someplace dry.

Making it clear in no uncertain terms that he would not see them abandoned again either. He gently placed them in her arms closing the subject as well as he then peeled himself out of his coat. Under he was wearing a long sleeved white shirt, dark pants and a dark vest. He draped it over the side of one of the booths, trying not to wince at the wet sounds, he despised being out in the damp. He then carefully took his charges back and sat down, the towel she’d offered him being used to help dry the kittens before he bothered to tend his own needs.

He was careful with them, totally ignoring her and everything else as he gently got as much of the wet as he could from their fur. At the end he left them all a huddled mass of fluffy fur and indignant murky blue eyes. The silver black striped ball of fluff was the first to toss dignity to the wind and start to salvage what he could by grooming the mess he’d been left in. Only then did he turn the towel on himself having a similar expression himself.

She smiled down at the tiny, wet bundles of fur in her arms, cooing at them softly as they mewed with adorable indignance. Telling her in no uncertain terms that they were hungry and decidedly unhappy with their current state of wet. A soft 'awww' passed her lips as he took the tiny kittens back and sat to tend to their needs before seeing to his own.

Irri lofted a brow and nodded, tallying a mental point in his favor for that gesture. "Tea it is." she said softly after a moment, bustling away to heat the water and fetch the tea infuser from her handbag. While the tea that Dax had was perfectly acceptable, she still had a bit of the fine Chandrilan Black blend she'd gotten what seemed like an eternity ago.

With a small pot of bubbling hot water, she gathered the necessities for tea and arranged them neatly on a tray, which she set on the table in front of him. "I'll be right back with the milk. This isn't the first time we've tended to kittens...they tend to get abandoned a lot in the alleys out here." Irri smiled and sauntered off, returning a moment or two later with a shallow dish of lukewarm milk and several more dry towels.

She watched as the tiniest of the trio immediately planted its little face into the dish, messily lapping up the milk and making contented noises. The other two soon joined in, and Irri absently sat down to watch them, a smile playing about her lips. The multi-colored kitten looked up at her and mewed, stumbling over to inspect her outstreched silvery-blue fingertips.

With their needs taken care of he could tend the few of his own, mostly just standing and not only drying his coat as best he could, but also cleaning the water he inevitably tracked in. He made sure that what was left could have been just from cleaning the floors as a whole and nothing so wet that would take a while to clean. An odd thing for him to do perhaps, but he had made the mess and didn’t think it polite to let a woman who was technically off work have to clean up another mess. He sat down when he saw she brought the tea and nodded his thanks, taking time to fix it and gently discouraging the kittens from poking their noses in it.

The solid black one had decided his shooing fingers were a new toy and decided to attack him which amused him greatly. “You’d think people with pets would be smart enough to get them fixed so they didn’t feel that abandoning the small offspring was the easiest choice.

Finding out that this was a common occurrence only poked his temper. He didn’t like stupidity and while there was nothing he could do about the situation it still upset him a little. He caught the black kitten mid pounce as it moved to attack the dangling string coming from his tea cup. It meowed with surprise squirming, but all he did was move it away with a soft chuckle. “My name is Serian Loria, what is yours miss?

"I agree. But I would amend that and suggest that we should also fix the people...that level of stupidity should not be permitted in the gene pool." She added rather archly, before her expression melted in response to the tiny kitten who decided that climbing onto her shoulder was the best idea it had ever had.

Luckily, the kittens had approached and sniffed at her cup, but retreated upon scenting the caf within. As she took it with no milk, there was nothing to interest their fledgling senses. The tiny bundle curled up on her shoulder began purring, almost impossibly loudly for something so tiny. "Irridia Solensis...a pleasure to meet you." she said with a smile, dipping her head carefully given the passenger on her shoulder.

She picked up her cup and sipped from it, watching as the silver and black striped kitten groomed itself and the black kitten stalked Serian's fingers. "Can I get you anything to eat? The cook is about to close down the kitchen for the night..." Irri asked softly, nodding to acknowledge Dax as he gestured through the serving window.

He blinked at her a moment then looked at the kittens “Though I could eat something and probably should given how long since I last ate, it probably wouldn’t be wise given this trio of mischief I rescued. I’ll have something once I return to the hotel, at least then they can wander the room while I keep my meal safely out of their reach. Though…” He looked over his shoulder at the still ongoing storm “I don’t relish the walk back.

It wasn’t phrased like he was asking, without asking, for a ride, he was more than capable of getting where he needed to go without assistance. “I shouldn’t keep you much longer, just long enough for these three to finish their drink and I mine. I do apologize for this inconvenience, this place was the only one I could recall and now I’ve kept you from getting to your home and out of the wet.

The black kitten had decided to stare at his reflection, puffing up his fur and arching his tail hissing for all he was worth. This got the other two to stare at him, but what got Serian to laugh was that at that moment the wind shifted making the rain splatter against the glass. This startled the little one so much he fell over backwards and almost fell off the table, rescued by his hand just in time. “At least it won’t be dull back home, especially with these three.

Fingers rose to gently move the kitten from her shoulder, it’s tiny, sleepy mew of displeasure perhaps the most adorable thing she’d ever heard. It was enough to induce Irri to cradle the kitten close, nuzzling it’s head and smiling as she was rewarded with a feline headbutt. “Well, if you’re sure...” she started, the kitten still cupped in her hands.

“At least let me give you a ride back to your hotel. It’s not fit for man nor beast out there. Especially tiny little beasties that don’t like water...yes, I’m talking about you, little one.” Irri laughed as the multicolored looked at her with its’ head tilted to the side, blinking as if to say ‘seriously, you silly human...what is wrong with you’.

Deep, steel blue eyes followed the black kitten’s topple and focused after a moment on the man’s features as they were warmed with laughter. His crimson gaze was lit with a merriment to match the sound, and she found herself tearing her gaze away after a moment so as not to be so rude as to stare. Irridia gently set the kitten down atop one of the towels to keep it warm before she slid out of the side of the booth she had sat in.

“Just give me a few moments to finish up here and we can go. I think I’ve even got a small box we can put towels in so the kittens will be comfortable.” Irridia added, smiling brightly as she went off to finish the routine she had with Dax to close down the diner.

It took perhaps ten minutes to finish, and to set the cleaning droids on their overnight programming. At least, she mused, she wasn’t on the schedule tomorrow. She wasn’t going to be able to sleep through this wretched storm in her tiny little rented room. Irridia put her apron away, folded neatly in her allotted space, before smoothing out her top and skirt. Her leather jacket slid on but remained unzipped as she rummaged for her keys in her pockets.

Satisfied that she was ready, Irri returned to Serian and the kittens, a small box and lid in her hands. “Will this do? We can line it with towels to keep them warm and the lid is kinda loose, but it’ll keep the rain off of them until we get into the ‘speeder.”

He nodded at her offer “As long as it isn’t an inconvenience, I’m staying at the Azure Retreat.” It was one of the finest hotels along the beach, commanding its own private slice of it and excellent views from the building. “Allow me to buy you a meal as well, it would only be fair and it would keep you from driving in this mess.

He watched her go about her tasks quietly, his tea was finished before she was done and the kittens finished their milk not long after. When she looked about done he carried both dishes to her and once they were taken, sat back down again. He gently lined the box and placed the kittens in, covering it with a lid and carrying it. “If the weather hasn’t cleared you may stay, I’ll sleep on the couch, driving in this wet isn’t safe.

He made it clear he didn’t want an argument from her about it, he wasn’t someone used to having people go against what he wished. However to make sure she didn’t make any assumptions about what he wanted in her regard he chose the couch. It wasn’t like he would get much sleep anyways, he hardly ever got more than a few hours and fitful ones at that.

"Not an inconvenience at all. I have to go past there to get home as it is." Irri added, resisting the urge to fuss with the box of kittens. Instead, she fiddled with her jacket, and wished distantly that her skirt were a little longer. It tended to ride up as she drove, and while that had been ok when...when...

The young woman blinked, confusion settling briefly across her features. It flitted away as soon as it had appeared, however, and she cleared her throat softly. "Sorry about that...I occasionally woolgather as Dax calls it." she smiled sheepishly before turning her attention back to the decidedly handsome man standing in front of her.

The crimson just added to the fascination, she thought to herself.

"That's a very chivalrous offer, and one I'd be delighted to accept...just follow me and we'll be on our way."

She turned to wave to Dax before leading Serian out the front door and down the side of the building to where she'd parked her speeder. It was not an expensive vehicle, but as well maintained as she could keep it with her meager earnings. It got her from point A to point B, as she was often fond of saying, and nothing more. Which was alright...her life here, such as it was, only consisted of working at the diner anyhow.

Once they were both inside the vehicle, with Serian holding to the box of kittens, Irri started the speeder and they were shortly on their way. Mercifully, it warmed up quickly, and she settled behind the controls with a contented sigh. There was a bonus to living a good distance away from the diner...she could enjoy the drive back and forth.

He was pleased she didn’t argue, he wasn’t a person used to being denied and especially over something was really just reasonable and smart. From her clothes and vehicle he assumed she wasn’t one check away from poverty nor was she on the streets like his very first two apprentices had been. He wasn’t even sure she was Sensitive, but he could find out once they were inside the room. He didn’t say much during the drive, he simply watched the buildings go by as they passed them. He could feel all the lives around him and to his Sight everywhere he looked there was a glowing light. Some were big, some were small, all sizes that were so easily seen.

In a way it was similar to seeing the sky on a clear night, for all those lights reminded him of stars. There was plenty of beauty he’d seen, this was one aspect of his abilities he never got tired of seeing. In the faint light of the speeder his lit ruby gaze seemed to glow, glittering like fine jewels. He was a very controlled person, she’d see it in how he had little expression, in how quiet he was. He didn’t talk needlessly and also didn’t seem to mind the silence. He almost faded into the background for he did nothing to bring attention to himself. Up close she’d see lines that indicated much pain and a lot less laughter. He also looked tired which wasn’t immediately visible in the harsh light of the diner.

For all that he was looking outside, he was also very aware of her every movement. He could see her in his peripheral vision and was taking his time studying her, just not being obvious about it.

They left the congestion of the city and found the open road that hugged the coast and led past the expensive, exclusive resorts. Beyond them were the small towns that made up the suburbs, where those who worked in the city to keep it moving were forced to live. It certainly wasn't ideal, she mused, but it was all she had. One hand remained on the steering yoke while the other lifted to pull the pins from her hair, leaving the chestnut curls to tumble loose across her shoulders. Damp as they were from their brief time in the rain, the silver strands were faint and glittering in the dim light within the speeder.

Irri sighed softly as she slumped into the seat, comfort winning out over perfect posture, even in light of her passenger. He reminded her a bit of the highborn aristos back home on Corellia, though the comparison wasn't a true one. He was polite and a perfect gentleman...well. Almost perfect, she mused, she was decently positive he was watching her.

She was used to that.

Silence reigned between them for the moment, with even the soft mewing of the kittens having quieted. Likely the little ones had managed to curl up together and fall asleep, in light of the warmth of the car and their bellies full of milk. She turned the speeder smoothly onto the tree lined road that led to the Azure Retreat, brightly lit holosigns pointing the way.

The parking area was covered and even had a covered walkway to the door. He carried the box in and when he got to the lift he swiped the card. He held the doors open while he waited for her and then walked in himself. It was a bit of a trip up since this particular lift took people to the more private suits. His wasn’t the largest, as he only needed one room, but it commanded the best view of the sunset. As they walked in a driod greeted them, but he ignored it for the moment. He lifted the lid and gently scooped the kittens up, placing the box on the side and making a next with the towel before putting them back in. As he had expected, even moving them hadn’t woken them as they were too deeply asleep.

There will be an extra charge for bringing pets, do you wish for a cleaning droid to bring quality food and a waste box?

He looked over at the droid giving it an irritated nod, he’d never much liked the mechanical pests. He looked over at Irridia “Menu is on the table near the couch order whatever you wish, I need to change out of these wet clothes.

On the coffee table there were all sorts of papers, books and, open a sketchbook. To the side of the mess was the stuff for the hotel. The drawing that was visible would be of the view from his room, which happened to be right then a blood red rainy sunset. The sky was totally covered by clouds, but they were stained vivid colors. When the sky was clear it was just as impressive a sight. When he came out he was dressed in loose grey pants and a white shirt. Clothing he’d be lounging in the room with compared to the clothing he’d worn for public. “If you need dry clothing use whatever of mine you wish, the wet stuff will be taken to be cleaned whenever the cleaning service gets here.

He made his own order after he sat down in one of the chairs, fruit salad, medium rare steak, steamed vegetables and cold cranberry juice.

It went without saying that though she’d been living there for some time, she’d not been inside any of the luxury resorts that lined this stretch of the coast. With what little money she’d had and the few credits she made at the diner, it was only barely enough to live on. It didn’t afford any opportunity for the finer things in life...things she’d enjoyed before.

With him.

Irridia nodded to Serian and turned her back to him, pressing fingers to her temples as the pain lanced through her skull anew. It happened every time she tried to remember beyond the past few months, tried to remember the face of the one who had rescued her from the dungeon of the Sith temple. But that time...that...last year of her life was gone.

Maybe it was gone for a reason, she mused, looking out at the rain soaked sunset without really noticing it.

She picked up the menu Serian had indicated earlier and placed an order for dinner, choosing a large salad with a variety of greens, a few pieces of fruit, and two large bottles of mineral water. Her peculiar hybrid body preferred vegetables and fruits in all of their varied forms, and was largely unwilling to tolerate protein save for the occasional bit of fish.

“Thank you...that would be a bit more comfortable.” Irri said softly, turning away from the window and catching another glimpse of the sketchbook on the table. She gave it a lingering look as she passed, wondering if he’d permit her to look through it later on. She left her jacket hung neatly in the proper place, before taking her bag and stepping into the ‘fresher to change. While she always carried a change of clothes with her for work, she’d already changed once that day after a slight disagreement with one of the diner’s stimcaf dispensers. She set that blouse aside, along with the skirt she still wore, and the still damp top.

Irri changed into the soft shorts from her bag, and borrowed one of Serian’s button-down shirts before she stepped back out. Setting aside her bag and her boots, she padded barefoot over to the bed and gently stroked each kitten’s head, lingering there to watch them as they slept, all wrapped up together. She sighed after a moment, and moved back over to the sitting area, curling up on the couch opposite where Serian sat.

Her dark, steel blue gaze gazed down at her fingers, their pale blue and silver shimmering in the soft light. That would fade soon, as would the silver streaks in her hair, one of which was twined around her fingers in that moment.

Lit ruby eyes watched the storm outside, he could feel the energy surging within it and knew that the raid was just the beginning. He looked over at her “So how did you end up on a resort planet working in a diner?

He knew that eventually he’d have to make conversation, at least till the meal arrived. He wasn’t used to small talk, even when he had apprentices he only spoke when he had need. It was easier for him if others started and kept it going, at least then it wouldn’t be so awkward.

Fingers toyed with the silver curl, watching as it slowly faded back to her usual chestnut. Absently tucking it behind her ear, she shifted slightly on the couch, slender legs folded beneath her as she gazed out the window. She'd noted the incredible view earlier, but this time her steel gaze was drawn down to the ocean as it roiled and snapped at the sky. Her gaze darkened as she sighed with a touch of wistfulness. The storm had a taste to it, an almost metallic tang to the energy that powered the wind and rain, and Irri wanted little more in that moment than to dive into the ocean to feel it for herself.

Blinking owlishly, she tore her gaze from the window and met Serian's crimson orbs looking to her as he spoke. "I...I don't know, to be honest." Irri shrugged and folded her hands in her lap, staring down at them instead of looking at him. Confusion warred with pain for control of her voice and features, and she loathed the way it made her sound.

"The last few months...maybe the last year...have been a bit of a blur, and there's a few weeks that I have no memory of at all. I was part of the...Confederacy for a while...and then when it collapsed...that's when I left, I think. Or at least, that's when my memories start going fuzzy."

Good job, Irri, you sound -pathetic-.

It sounded like she had something akin to amnesia, he could relate to it in a way. “I was a part of the Confederacy too not too long ago. My best advice for you is to not force yourself to remember. Unfortunately this mean that when those memories surface you won’t be able to control it, but fighting it only makes things worse. I’ve...had something similar and this is what helped me. The mind, especially ones own does not take well to being battered and you find you beat yourself up worse than if you had left well enough alone till things were ready.” He shrugged “I am not an expert however, but I do know something about the mind and the punishments that it can take.

He had a particular set of talents for manipulating minds and he knew better than most how fragile they were. She could have had her mind manipulated, but one would have to assess what it was she might have had that made her a threat to begin with. “Yes, I am a force user, I wouldn’t be able to tell you just exactly where I fall because I personally don’t think in terms of ‘colors’ when it comes to my abilities. I can at least tell you that you are safe around me.

He wasn’t a bad person, but he wasn’t good either for he could and would do whatever he needed to do to get whatever he had to do done. No person, law or personal feeling would get in the way either if they got in the way. He might as well tell her now since he was sure the question would come up eventually. He didn’t know if she was one such who feared those of his kind, but the sooner he found out the better.

Lifting her head, her gaze met his across the small space, and one corner of her lips lifted in a faint half-smile. "Believe me, I figured that out the hard way. Last time I actually tried to put the pieces together I blacked out from the pain and woke up a full day later."

Irri lifted a hand from her lap, palm facing upward with slender fingers cupped slightly, gaze still on his. Hovering over her hand a moment later, was a small sphere of water that made no sound as it popped into existence. It was a deep, angry blue to match the storm-tossed ocean outside, miniature waves rippling as the sphere spun above her hand. "I was wondering if you were a Force-user when you walked into the diner earlier. My senses haven't worked right since my memory was screwed up, so I wasn't really sure. But this..." she said softly, eyes watching the swirling sphere as it spun.

"...I've been able to do this since I was very little. I have a gift for manipulating water...useful, considering my genetics."

He chuckled “I don’t use my powers unless I have need. My aura stays hidden as well as I don’t want to spark a challenge from someone feeling the need to foolishly attack me.

She wouldn’t know it quite yet, maybe just a sense of it perhaps, but he was a private person and the act of hiding his aura allowed him to have no intrusions. He watched the water for a moment and nodded “I have an affinity for fire, so its interesting to find someone with an affinity for its counter element.

He’d already made up his mind that he would take her on as a student, but he would wait till morning to tell her. It was then there was a knock on the door, he opened it and a couple droids trundled in and he took their food while they fixed the stuff for the animals and took their wet clothing away. He gave her her food and then sat down to start eating his own, neatly moving things away from potential mess. “What are your plans?

He assumed she didn’t wish to remain on the planet for the rest of her life and it might help him get an idea of what his next step with her would be.
