The rain had been coming down hard for the better part of an hour. It drummed a constant rhythm on the tin roof of the tiny diner, as if it were knocking to be let in and refusing to take no for an answer.
Irri sighed as she wiped down the counter for perhaps the fifth time in the last five minutes. Patrons were scarce at the diner that night, which was hardly surprising given the fury of the storm that raged outside. Deep ocean blue eyes cast across the windows briefly, lingering on the doorway for a moment. Something teased at the edges of her senses, as if dragging teasing fingers down the side of her neck until she shivered.
Shaking her head, she turned away from the door and gave her attention over to the pile of freshly washed coffee cups. With a practiced motion, she picked up each one and dried it off, before adding it to the pile of its waiting, identical brethren. It took her just a few minutes to finish the task and to realize that all of the cups and glasses were clean and there were none left to be dried.
Folding up the towel she'd used and setting it aside, Irri turned to put a fresh pot of caf on to brew. It was a decent dark roast that she'd acquired a fondness for since she'd been working at the diner. Two of her clean, white cups were retrieved, turned right side up in preparation, when Dax called to her through the serving window.
"Hey Irri...got fresh caf for me?"
The brunette leaned over to grin at her boss. "Brewing as we speak, big guy. I'll bring you a cup when it's done. Want me to start closing up out front?"
"That would be helpful."
The young woman hummed a soft tune under her breath as she went about her work. While the cleaning droid worked on the floor, she went to lock the large double doors.
