Description:
After Ashin’s defeat at the hands of Triam Akovin, Ashin returned to her old style of tanking. She realized the disrespect inherent in using the Force to protect herself constantly, when armor could do the job more often than not. As a result, she applied to Iron Crown Armories’ metallurgists, who used the highest grade of Val’halan phrik to replicate her old reliable set of armor. The phrik was provided by Minerals and Metals Inc, a Val’halan mining firm, 85% owned by members of Fringe leadership after a corporate raid of sorts on J.A.C. and its subsidiaries locked down the planet’s phrik supply. (45% of the shares were already held by influential Fringe members Dissero, Valik, and Rave Merrill, after Velok’s holocron auction.)
The project was personally headed by Master Rave Merrill, who -- unbeknownst to Varanin -- placed a drop of her blood inside each piece of armor. As a result, Merrill can now track Varanin anywhere she wears this armor.
Phrik is very light, and Ashin’s old suit, after which this one was patterned, was made of alchemized durasteel, which is very heavy. This suit offers the same degree of protection (the original was at class 10), but at a much lower weight. (The gauntlets are delicate, preserving some degree of dexterity in the hands. Grabbing lightsabre blades would not be a good idea.)
However, as the old suit was worn by a younger and more mobile woman, who had not yet taken repeated injuries to her right knee, the end result is very similar for mobility. Light this armor may be, but Ashin generally does not move with dexterity when armored. This lack of dexterity is compounded by the overlapping nature of most of the plates, as shown. The torso setup is very solid, as are the bracers; the shoulder armor also limits mobility.
Another major limitation is in terms of insulation. Though the armor is generally worn over a bodysuit, which may or may not be insulated, several points on the armor place metal in contact with the body. As a result, the armor cannot function as a Faraday cage. Electric current, as with Force lightning, cannot be ignored.
Likewise, though the armor can withstand blasterfire and various Dark Side blasts, it conducts the heat of those impacts, potentially roasting the wearer. This may be compounded by the time required to take off and put on the armor -- close to five minutes, in most cases, with telekinesis or a helper.
The armor has no helmet, another significant weakness. When she wears a helmet at all, Varanin prefers a Tenloss Warrior Helm, which is merely class 8 armor. The fit is imperfect, resulting in an exploitable gap if a blade angles up against the neck armor. Likewise, several of the overlapping plates are vulnerable to a properly angled blade.
