DESCRIPTION

The AS/BX-02a "Eel" Battle Droid, often referred to as "Eels" are designed to function as dangerous close combatants in aquatic environments. They are mostly composed of durasteel, but have relatively light armour and get be destroyed by a few blaster bolts. However, they are have a small profile so are hard to detect/target at a distance and will often attack in swarms.

They will often sink right to the bottom of shallower environments and immerse themselves in mud, waiting to ambush passing ships.

They are a threat both to vessels and infantry. Their powerful jaws are capable of rending metal apart, and they will often attack structures and ships and piece their hulls. A few of these can do serious damage if they are not dealt with by aquatic infantry.

The Eels are loaded with a relatively simple programming. Unlike many ASA droids they do not learn over time, and must be subject to software patching to add improvements. They will enter one of several modes, and start waiting/hiding or scouting for prey, or following larger tactical orders. Once engaged with a target they will communicate electronically amongst themselves to co-ordinate their efforts, often spreading out and attacking from multiple angles.

They can swim upstream and lodge themselves in river banks. This can make it exceedingly difficult for enemy troops to traverse this type of terrain if bridges are down/repulsor vehicles are not available. They have enough energy to maintain active for weeks, and will often persist in an environment long after the end of a conflict, following their basic programming and attacking enemy soldiers.

These droids are kept straightened out, rack-mounted and deactivated when not in use. To be deployed each shelf of eight droids can be dropped from a ship, at which point the clamps will release the droids which will swim free. Alternatively they can be transported along the ground, and carried individually into the water by Clanker droids or two soldiers.

They are, at least, intelligent enough not to target civilians.
