Description:

With Arkudans making an appearance on the galactic scale, the immediate realization that the galaxy was not ready for them was made very apparent. This came in the form of the most simple of things: hand weapons. Arkudans cannot use most hand weapons as the standard weapons are usually not sized or fitted for Arkudan biology.

The answer was the Mauler. The weapon is, quite simple, a forearm mounted, small caliber cannon. Built with reliability and simplicity in mind, the weapon is a muzzle loading slugthrower that fires chemically propelled rounds. The barrel is made of Alusteel with durasteel fittings and features an 80mm bore.

To operate the Mauler, the Arkudan simply crams one of many chemical propellant packages down the barrel until it meets the base of the barrel. Once done, the chosen projectile follows until it is properly seated. After this, the Arkudan simply cocks the hammer located on the back of the Mauler, making the weapon read to fire. The weapon can then be fired by pulling the collapsing trigger mounted on the weapon's side. Once triggered, the hammer hits the kinetic operated spark device mounted within the back of the barrel. This spark triggers the highly flammable flimsi packaging containing the chemical propellant, which then ignites the propellant charge and sends the projectile downrange.

However, there is an alternative firing method that has found mild popularity among Arkudans. In this model, the weapon functions normally, but is absent of both trigger and hammer. Instead, a small pinhole is found at the top of the barrel. The Arkudan loads the weapon normally, but instead of cocking the hammer, he or she then places a small amount of chemical propellant in powder form within the pinhole. Once this is done, the Mauler is aimed at the target and the user then lights the propellant powder with heat or flame. This lights the propellant and fires the weapon.

The ammunition is highly versatile and ranges from anti-personnel to more specialized roles. Canister and grape shot are generally used to clear confined areas of enemies or to affect large groups. Standard shot is for more 'precise' and long range shots, or to use against more heavily armored foes. The fin-stabilized grenades are for use against large groups at long range or for enemy vehicles or installations. Lastly, the Spider shot is a type of chain shot capable of scything through enemy groups at close range and is generally used as a terror weapon to break enemy morale.

The main downsides of the weapon are simple. The weapon is slow to load and fire, making it a bit more cumbersome at times. The weapon is also not hugely accurate outside of the grenade rounds. Lastly, the weapon has decent recoil which is enough to be felt by all but the largest of Arkudans and would easily break the arms of smaller, less robust species.
