Sakadi Sinvala stood upon the narrow steel walkway that wove its way through the dense, carefully curated overgrowth. Beneath her slippered feet, the metal hummed faintly, a subtle reminder of the immense machinery hidden below. Above, pale white bulbs drifted in slow, deliberate patterns, their glow soft and diffused. They dulled the colors of the fresh green foliage and stretched shadows into long, wavering shapes, giving the entire garden an almost dreamlike stillness. These were the floating gardens of Hosnian Prime. An immense platform held up by repulsor fields, gliding with stately grace through the heart of the capital.

She had chosen this as the meeting place herself.

It lay firmly within what was the High Republic's sphere of influence, yet close enough to the Blackwall that its presence lingered in every public debate on the planet.

Sakadi tilted her head slightly, her gaze tracing the towering silhouettes above. The trees rose impossibly high, their branches woven into a canopy that filtered the artificial light into fractured beams. A small plaque at the base of one trunk identified them as originating from Bri'n. A diplomatic gift, no doubt, offered in an era when Hosnian Prime stood as the unquestioned seat of galactic unity.

That era felt impossibly distant now.
The galaxy she inhabited had never felt more fractured in her lifetime. Even the Jedi Order, once a constant and unwavering presence, had been reduced to scattered remnants. Hidden networks, isolated enclaves, and a handful of stubborn bastions clinging to relevance.

Her expression remained composed, but her thoughts were anything but still.

The ghost of Caltin Vanagor had prompted her to act, but she needed information first. Answers, to better understand the situation.

That had, as he had suggested, driven her toward what might be the last significant concentration of light left in the galaxy: the Order of Shiraya.

If anyone had answers, it would be them.

Answers about the Blackwall - what it truly was, and what lay beyond it. Answers about the power structures forming in the Core, obscured by rumor and silence. Answers about the Jedi themselves: how many remained, where they stood, and whether they still had a future worth fighting for.

There was too much unknown. Too much at stake.

And so, after considerable effort and more than a few carefully navigated channels, she had managed to establish contact. Not with just any member of the Order, but with one of notable standing.

Now, all that remained was to see whether the journey had been worth it.

Lily pulled out the message again, her eyes scanning over what had been said. It was still a strange feeling being a point of contact for people, being seen as someone of high standing and to be respected. Lily did not feel very impressive as a Jedi a lot of the time and that could be part of the reason that she wasn't sure that her place on the council would be one that was lasting. Her decisions and actions seemed to not match up with where the council were wanting to go and that was never a good sign to have such a mismatched view of the future of the Order. For now, Lily was still part of the council and she was going to consider what is important to her and what Lily needed to reconsider as crucial.

Arriving on Hosnian Prime, Lily was new to the world, she had never really found herself around in this part of the galaxy. It was something that Lily was curious on and wondered if she would have time to visit and explore things more. Lily walked slowly, taking in the views as she made her way to the meeting point. Her mind curious if this was going to be another Sith or Dark Side leaning person seeking redemption or a new path within the High Republic.

She had dealt with a couple of people like that more recently.

Looking around the area as she arrived at the meeting point, Lily spotted someone that she could feel held a presence in the Force. Someone that held the presence similar to a Jedi. Lily was curious, but she didn't wish to assume or be optimistic about the fact that this could be a Jedi. It was important to talk and understand more of this stranger. Walking over to her, Lily gave a wave. "Hello, I am assuming that you are Sakadi Marathi-Sinvala?" Lily extended a hand in greeting with a polite smile on her lips.

It was definitely going to be a meeting that Lily was going to find interesting.

Sakadi moved with slow, measured grace as she turned to regard the Echani woman in silence. Her eyes, usually an almost iridescent lilac, had dulled to a soft metallic sheen beneath the glow of the garden lights, set within lavender features framed by silver hair that shimmered like moonlight.

She studied the other woman openly. Measuring. Calculating.

Lily Decoria.

The truth was, Sakadi had not known who she was meeting until the woman stood before her now. But uncertainty was not something she wore plainly, even if the name Decoria stirred no memory within her.

The woman's appearance, however, did.

Sakadi’s gaze drifted over the Echani’s powerful frame as she adjusted the white shawl draped loosely around her shoulders. She had seen this Jedi Master before. Posters of her, provocatively dressed to accentuate her hourglass figure, hung in almost every speeder bus she took, sporting slogans like "The Republic Needs You!"

What the posters failed to capture, Sakadi thought, was the sheer physicality of the woman standing before her now. The strength in her build was more impressive than the curves advertisers so desperately tried to sell. Yet despite that strength, there remained a softness to her face. Something earnest and almost disarmingly kind.

Sakadi’s ears twitched faintly, the first visible break in her otherwise statuesque composure. Then she gave the smallest nod, as though the motion itself helped gather her thoughts.

She raised a hand and flashed three quick gestures in a fluid motion. It was Echani War Hand. A sign language meant to be performed with a single hand, almost exclusively for battle signals when at least one hand was carrying weaponry. Most Echani martial artists she'd met spoke it fluently. And this woman was, in every sense of her appearance, the martial artist.

Permission to approach. Followed by a soft tap against her temple and a nudge of her head toward the Echani.
War Hand left no room for question marks, but she believed her meaning clear. Her reach through the Force was gentle and unobtrusive, like bathing in rays of sunlight.

With it came her disembodied voice.

~ Walk with me. ~ Not seeming to take no for an answer, she glided forward and extended an arm for Lily to hook into.

She offered no greeting, nor any inclination that one was forthcoming, as she strolled. ~ I apologise for the intrusion. My true voice was lost a century ago. This has been my preferred method since Knighthood. ~ Her gaze shifted briefly toward Lily again, thoughtful and assessing. ~ I also vow not to pry into your thoughts or emotions, if that offers reassurance. Many find telepathy… invasive. ~ A faint pause lingered between them before Sakadi continued. ~ Master Decoria, was it? Your physical discipline is remarkable. I can only imagine the degree of mastery required to shape oneself so thoroughly. ~ Though the compliment sounded sincere, her attention had already wandered momentarily toward the towering trees overhead, their leaves rustling softly beneath the evening breeze. Still, a faint smile lingered upon her lips.

~ In truth, I had hoped you might indulge a few curiosities of mine. I was roused by an old friend, and now find myself in a galaxy wholly different from the one I left. ~ The corner of her mouth tugged with quiet dissatisfaction. ~ And so I find myself drawn to what Light I can find. That of your Order, as it appears. ~

She came to a gradual halt beside a bed of nightflowers glowing beneath a hovering lantern. Pale petals shimmered silver-blue in the artificial light. Sakadi studied them quietly for a few seconds before speaking again. ~ Would you tell me of your Order’s ideals? Its principles? And your own place within it? ~ Her eyes finally settled fully upon Lily again. ~ I wish to understand what drives you- what drives those who still stand as guardians of peace and seekers of wisdom in this era. ~ There was something almost weary beneath the calm composure now. ~ Before I choose whether to devote myself to another cause destined to erode beneath the endless touch of conflict. ~

Lily noted that the Selphi Jedi Master immediately used Echani War Hand, it was surprising since it was not something that Lily really expect to see others outside of the Echani culture to really know, especially enough to form sentences. While the signal did not have a question, the intention of one was clear and with her own hand, Lily affirmed, meaning that Sakadi could approach. It was strange to use hand signals for simple conversation and not used in combat situations like she had been taught them to be used for.

While the Jedi Knight had seen the posters of herself and were not exactly thrilled about them, she understood why they were being used and did hope they would be positively received. They were not accurate depictions of herself but it was interesting what assets of her physicality that others focused upon. The Echani warrior was never going to aim to make herself appear that way, she was far too comfortable with her appearance and enjoyed the muscular frame that she posed. It was something that she believed should be appreciated.

Hearing the voice in her mind was a strange experience but it made sense that this was someone who did not really use their voice, given that she approached Lily using Echani War Hand and not a vocal greeting like most would. Lily hooked arms as requested and walked with the Selphi, curious on the desire for a more intimate walk.

"Sorry to hear that you have lost your voice." Lily did not seem overly concerned about Sakadi pushing the thoughts and conversation into her mind, though it was kept very surface level. Lily had learned how to defend her mind very early on in her Jedi training. Being the warrior that she was, it was important to keep her mind focused and secure.

Turning on her allies and kill those she considered friends would break Lily.

Shaking her head with a soft giggle, "Jedi Knight, not a Master yet. But I appreciate the vote of confidence in my abilities." Lily mentioned as she was still young to be a Jedi Master and there was a lot in the galaxy and in life that she needed to experience before Lily considered herself ready for the challenges of becoming a Jedi Master. There was always a weight and burden that came with carry such a title, as well as being on the council and being the Battle Master. Many would be looking to Lily amongst several others on the council to be solving issues.

Pressure that Lily was never sure that she could ever be prepared to handle. It was difficult enough handling her own Padawan, yet alone everything else. "I appreciate the compliment, I train daily and rigorously to ensure that I display to the best of my abilities what a true Echani warrior is like. As well as demonstrating what a Jedi fighter is like. I feel it is important to have a warrior mindset like that as someone who fights as physically as I do. It is not for every Jedi and I believe others should find their own paths, this is just the one I wish to embody as much as I can."

"The Jedi Order seeks what it has always sought in the many variations throughout history, peace, democracy, protection of innocents and safe explorations of the Force. I am the Battle Master of the Jedi Order within the High Republic, providing lessons in various forms of combat to all students. I also fight against the Sith as all Jedi do, but I try an offer olive branches to those who prefer life as bokken Jedi or seclusion in enclaves. Coordinate with them and ensure there is an open line of communication so that we Jedi can be united against the Sith." Unity was crucial in the fight, especially when the Sith were displaying a high level of unity within themselves. Something not really seen before.

Taking a moment to think and breathing in deeply, "sadly, this is not a peaceful time for the galaxy. The Sith have only grown stronger and bolder with the demise of the Galactic Alliance and many of the Jedi who were highly skilled from that order vanishing or stepping away to pursue other desires. It has been an uphill battle, it will continue to be an uphill battle for a while now. Unfortunately, conflict and war are going to seem not only inevitable but also endless. But as the Jedi have in the past, so shall we, preserve and push the Sith back."

"But we do need allies, we need Jedi to step up and we need teachers to help demonstrate to the next generation of Jedi that while this conflict is bad. It is not all that the Jedi will be and it is not all that they will face." Looking to Sakadi, "hopefully my words are somewhat convincing. I was never really much for talking in Basic... action was always preferred, very Echani of me, I know." Lily laughed a little.

Sakadi nodded absently. ~ A Knight it is, then. ~

Inwardly, she chastised herself for assuming the Order still resembled the one she had known a decade ago. During the war, any Knight skilled enough to survive the front lines without losing themselves had often ascended to Master quickly. There had simply not been enough capable Jedi to keep the ranks intact otherwise.

At Lily’s words about the mindset of a warrior, Sakadi cast a sidelong glance toward the Echani. She understood. Combat was woven into the very marrow of their people. Yet whenever lightsabers became wrapped in the romance of battle, it left a bitter taste in her mouth.

~ I once had an apprentice who would have agreed with you completely. ~ A faint, wistful smile touched her lips. ~ He devoted his life to becoming a guardian. The hero who stands before danger so others do not have to. ~ This time, she deliberately turned to meet Lily’s gaze, lilac eyes studying the Echani’s pale blue. ~ But he neglected to learn when the blade should remain sheathed. And that the purpose of a fight is never the fight itself. ~ Her tone carried the stern patience of a grandmother correcting a mistake she had seen too many times before. ~ Please pass on the lesson that I failed to teach him. Then I can support your path wholeheartedly. ~

Their conversation drifted naturally toward the teachings of the Order. Lily spoke of principles unchanged by time: preserving peace, defending democracy, serving the will of the Force.

Sakadi listened in thoughtful silence, her attention seemingly captured by the lanterns floating among the nightflowers. In truth, she was reflecting upon the distance between them. The Echani possessed a tolerance Sakadi no longer knew how to summon. A forgiveness she herself had slowly lost over the years. The practitioners of the Dark Side had exhausted her patience long ago. Again and again, she had watched the same cycle repeat itself. Fear becoming hatred, hatred becoming war, and war leaving only grief for the next generation to inherit.

The Dark Side never seemed to tire of feeding that fire.

Silence settled comfortably between them.

Sakadi did not disturb it.

Lily spoke first.

~ It has always been an uphill battle. ~ Sakadi replied softly. Her gaze lingered on the drifting lights overhead. ~ The Dark Side possesses one unfortunate advantage. It needs only wait for our light to go out. ~ Then, slowly, an enigmatic smile curved across her features. ~ Unfortunately for them, dawn is just as inevitable. ~

The Force sought balance in all things. No war could last forever, just as no era of peace could remain untouched forever. It was a painful truth. One she still struggled to accept completely herself.

Sakadi turned toward the Echani once more. Though she had to tilt her head upward to meet Lily’s eyes, there was something in her calm composure that made her feel equally tall.

~ Convincing. ~

The word lingered thoughtfully between them.

Her head tilted slightly, moonlight-silver hair cascading over one shoulder like a waterfall of pale silk. ~ I believe that, with practice, you could become very convincing indeed, Knight Decoria. For now, you persuade through honesty. You radiate hope… but with sorrowful eyes. ~

It was hard to deny whenever she studied the Echani's face. Lily’s conviction felt genuine, unwavering even, yet shadowed by a grim sadness that sat too deeply to be ignored.

She clasped her hands loosely behind her back. ~ Could you show me through action, then? As is most natural to you. ~ Curiosity glimmered openly within her lilac eyes.

"I am sure there are many within my Order who would agree that I should be made rank of Jedi Master, but I am still in my early twenties and there is so much of the galaxy and the Force that I still need to study and experience before I would ever feel capable in accepting such a title." Of course some would argue such humbleness was a clear sign but there was no winning those arguments. All Lily understood was that she felt there was still a vast amount she needed to learn and overcome before she could even consider her place amongst the Jedi Masters in the galaxy.

Lily offered a sympathetic smile, she feared her own Padawan was sometimes one who would be similar in thinking to Master Sakadi's old Padawan. However, she understood what was being asked of her, Lily nodded her head. "While I understand my role and I fully accept and push myself into the necessary situations that require my skills. What I do is not something that I believe should be the ideals or the role that the Jedi should play for the long term. Right now is a dangerous time, however, that wasn't always the case. It wasn't always a time where danger surrounded us on all sides." Lily mentioned as she looked to the Jedi Master.

"There is always a need for philosophers, thinkers, believers, creatives with the Force. Peace keepers, diplomats. They are the Jedi of the future and they are the ones that will be able to ensure the Sith never rise to power like this again. My role is small, my role is merely to ensure those Jedi survive and get to live that future." Lily stated, she did not see herself being anyone of great importance during times of peace and serenity. While Lily wanted to find such times, that would be when her blade was no longer needed. When her role as a Jedi was finally over. When she could think on a future that did not demand her fighting the greatest of evils every time.

Shrugging, "dawn is always approaching but every spark during the darkest of nights can ignite fires across the galaxy that burn away the shadows until the dawn comes. And right now, it feels like one of the darker nights, a long dark night." Two growing Sith factions, not fighting amongst each other for dominance, but instead working side by side. It was strange to see but felt oppressive in a far more dangerous way than normal.

When asked to spar, to demonstrate in the language far more spoken and plainer in Lily's experience, the Echani was surprised but appreciative. "I can attempt. I have no really met many Jedi who fully understand the ways in which Echani communicate through sparring. If anything is unclear, feel free to ask." Lily mentioned, looking around, she was not sure this felt an appropriate location to spar but it was not really an issue. Unclipping her belt, Lily cast it aside so that it would not distract or to tempt her.

"Shall we begin then?"

Sakadi remained silent for much of the conversation, content to let Lily speak her mind. Only when the Echani Art was mentioned did she reply.

~ When I was younger, and still struggling with the loss of my voice, my Master encouraged me to study other forms of communication. ~

As she spoke, her fingers drifted to the sash wrapped around her layered robes. With a slow, practiced tug, the knot came loose.

The garments drifted soundlessly to the floor in a pooling tide of white silk and coarse-spun brown wool, revealing the simpler slate-gray tunic beneath. Stripped of ornament and ceremonial layering, Sakadi appeared smaller somehow. Yet paradoxically more dangerous, like a blade finally drawn from its sheath.

~ I studied the lekku movements of the Twi’leks. The intricate sign languages of the Anomid and Neimoidians. ~ A faint glimmer of humor touched her eyes. ~ Even Tusken, at my most desperate. ~

Then she turned away from Lily and took three measured steps across the lantern-lit park, creating deliberate distance between them. When she faced the Echani once more, moonlight silvered her profile.

~ But the most fascinating by far… was Echani. Battle and martial discipline transformed into language. Emotion rendered through motion. ~ Her gaze narrowed slightly, reflecting genuine admiration. ~ I found it exquisite. ~

And then, without another word, Sakadi changed. The shift was immediate and unmistakable.

Her stance widened. One foot slid behind the other while her arms rose into a poised and fluid guard. Gone was the serene philosopher. In her place stood something harder.

A warrior prepared equally to receive violence or provide it. Whatever adaptation the moment demanded, she would become it.

In truth, Sakadi had never truly mastered the Echani Art. At best, she had climbed to the Second Tier before her studies had been abandoned for other callings. Yet she understood the philosophy beneath it. Understood that every motion carried meaning, every hesitation confessed uncertainty, every strike revealed the soul behind it.

And knew that Lily, being Echani, would read all of it.

The odds were not in Sakadi’s favor. She knew that with painful clarity.

To rely upon the Force now would be dishonorable. To create distance or fight indirectly would betray the very tradition she claimed to admire. Echani battle demanded honesty through physicality alone. And Lily possessed every natural advantage imaginable. She was taller by nearly a head. Younger by decades. Stronger in every obvious sense. Sakadi half suspected the woman could simply seize her, sit atop her, and declare victory before the contest properly began.

Still, there existed counters for strength.

Precision could neutralize force. Timing could fracture momentum. Certain grapples and joint locks favored leverage over raw power, while carefully placed strikes might force a stalemate.

As Sakadi circled sideways with guarded steps, her mind flowed through five separate duel sequences in rapid succession. A probing feint, an aggressive elbow-counter sequence. A sacrificial lock, or a retreat into mirrored defense.

All of them, undoubtedly, read by Lily. In the end, Sakadi settled upon restraint over aggression.

She grew still.

Utterly still.

Her lilac eyes remained fixed upon the Echani with unwavering focus, calm and predatory all at once. Waiting and watching.

Coiled like a viper the instant before the strike.

Nodding her head as Sakadi mentioned the various forms of communication that she learned over the years to replace the voice once lost. Lily had no experience in such things but there was some understanding. "I have studied various fighting cultures but also, various ways people fight across the galaxy." Numerous people focus on the main warrior people, the Mandalorians, the Echani, the Jedi, the Sith, the Atrisian and such. But Lily was fascinated in all ways of fighting. Seeing the differences in Wookiee fighting culture, compared to Twi'lek fighting styles, to traditional ways on planets like Dathomir and more aquatic worlds like Mon Cala.

While Lily was of course biased towards her own race's style of fighting, each one she had learned was of deep interest to Lily. Where some had social taboos to fighting, the priorities that differed, the focus on differing movements and styles. She observed events like fighting pit champion matches, shock boxing and kaggaths. They all highlighted brief insights on various cultures and the history that flowed from that. "I am glad to hear that you admire my people's way so much." Lily's movements shifted into graceful, dancer like as she adopted a far more flexible and elegant fighting form than one might assume due to her muscles and frame.

There was a clear signal to Sakadi that she was not merely a force of nature, a brute in power. A hammer. Her silver eyes studied the movements of Sakadi, the cycle of differing approaches that crossed the Jedi Master's mind. The understanding that certain approaches could never work, that other approaches would be betrayal to the traditions of Echani fighting culture. However, the stillness was an approach that Lily did not think Sakadi would settle on. A trap clear with intention. The tension within Sakadi was clear, a strike, a counter was poised for when Lily dared to approach. Lily breathed in deeply as she focused her mind.

Predicting movements was not something that one had to use the Force to do, Echani warriors were sometimes thought to be just as prescient as a Jedi if they were dedicated enough. Lily did not hamper her progress as an Echani warrior in this regard by relying on the Force now that she was a Jedi. If anything, Lily worked even harder to demonstrate that she was not only a stand out warrior as a Jedi but one of the best Echani warriors as well. There would not be an asterisk on her name for why she was as talented as she was.

So, while Sakadi attempted to prepare a counter to Lily. The Echani warrior focused her mind in the moment, the warrior unlocked. Sharp yet powerful strike snapped out insanely fast towards Sakadi's stomach, a punch delivered faster than most people would think was naturally possible. As soon as the punch was fully extended, a sharp pushing kick to Sakadi's leg was sent out. One to strike out and over extend the Jedi Master's stance to off balance her.

The Echani Art was not just a form of combat. It was a language.

Her approach, her rhythm, was like her stance in the argument. She was a roaming Knight now, her ties limited to the Hidden Path and the Outcasts. It was a matter of personal conviction to remain apart from galactic affairs. She had yielded the initiative long ago, choosing restraint over action. Choosing to remain passive.

She was not the driving force in the galaxy, nor in their exchange. She was the one who had to be convinced. By force.

The Echani warrior read her stance and immediately seized the initiative Sakadi had surrendered. The attack came brutally straightforward. Honest, exactly the way Sakadi had come to understand the woman through their conversation.

Sakadi backpedaled, striving to maintain at least two paces of distance between them. She caught the incoming punch with both hands, blocking with the palm of her right hand and locking onto the warrior's wrist with her left, but the blow carried through regardless. She could match this woman's speed, yes.

Not her strength.

The fist crashed into her stomach, driving deep enough to slam the air from her lungs. Pain rippled through her core, but her own hands remained firmly clamped around the Echani's wrist, a desperate measure of defense that had failed to stop the strike.

Fool. Challenging an Echani in her prime.

The thought had barely crossed her mind before the follow-up came - a lightning-fast kick snapping toward her leg.

Sakadi twisted sharply, letting the strike scrape past her leg rather than connect. The moment it passed, she retaliated immediately. Her own leg hooked around the Echani's, lifting it higher than intended in the kick, and disrupting the warrior's balance.

At the same instant, Sakadi yanked hard on the arm she still held with her full weight. She pivoted, turning her body into the motion and sacrificing her own footing to generate momentum. The world lurched as both combatants were pulled off-center.

It was a sacrificial throw, designed not to overpower the Echani, but to bring her crashing down with Sakadi. Not unlike how she'd been in conversation. Drawing from personal failure to rebuff the Echani's arguments.

Lily had not accepted that passiveness or inaction were acceptable stances for the Jedi. The galaxy fell to the Dark Side, to the Sith if the Jedi were anything but constantly vigilant and active in fighting back against the evils. Lily had seen that with the Galactic Alliance, the Hidden Path and with other Jedi. They allowed time to pass, they allowed things to fester as a status quo, and now the most dominant presence in the galaxy was the Sith. Lily's approach to the fight was how she approached the fight with the Sith. Caution but actively pursuit.

Before Lily could continue her attacks on Sakadi, the other Jedi moved her plan on dragging Lily down onto the ground with her. Attempting to knock Lily on the ground did not phase the Echani, she had dealt with grappling and fighting on the ground plenty of times, people had falsely assumed that she could be positioned into locks and wrestled into submission on the ground but Lily on grinned in that style of fighting since she knew exactly how to approach things.

Instead of focusing on breaking the fall to remain safe. Lily went aggressive, she leaned into Sakadi and aimed to land on top of the Jedi. The aim was the have her left forearm pressing against the throat of the other woman and a raised fist aiming for the face. Lily was showing that no matter how tough things got, no matter where the fight would take her, Lily was always prepared. But there was restraint, Lily did not rain down blows to Sakadi's face. She was not trying to actually fight aggressively, or knock the woman out. So Lily merely left the demonstration of what her intentions were. A fight that would never surrender.

A light that only burned brighter when surrounded by shadows. That was the focused and resilient determination of Lily, that was the spark that shone in her silver eyes as she looked down.

The Jedi only lost when they stopped fighting, when they became passive and inactive in the face of darkness.
