STATISTICS

STRENGTHS

  • Plug Me In - Upon connection to a data port, whether it be a starship, a base, or otherwise, Gambit is granted all the usual astromech permissions:
  • Expertly Hacked - A data port belonging to a base allows Gambit to freely manipulate its doors, shut down security systems, access the building layout, and retrieve data stored inside.
  • Look How Small You Are Down There - A data port belonging to a starfighter allows Gambit to seize control of the vessel, piloting it, as well as calculate hyper jumps.
  • 400 Kelvin - Gambit is designed to adapt to and operate in near-apocalyptic environments, and as such proves to be incredibly resilient. Not only is his sturdy chassis enough to let him tank drops from high altitudes, his heat resistance proves remarkably effective, able to withstand temperatures that would otherwise melt an organic in a near instant. His heat resistance, as such, proves surprisingly effective against mild lightsaber attacks, as a light swing won't be enough to sever the droid in half. Not that he'd be able to do much against the full thrust of one as it sinks inside his circuits.
  • The Future Starts With You - Furthering his well equipped ability to function in dire situations, Gambit is prepared to self-sustain himself in the case of a complete societal collapse, and is designed to function on power sources as low as 1.1 volts for protracted periods of time, due to his insanely long battery life.
  • Preservation of Mass - Aperture droids are capable of functioning even when whittled down to their most basic of selves; a mere, inch-long core housing all its memories, personalities, and directives. This increases Gambit's chances of survival during instances in which his outer chassis is severely damaged, and the core itself gives off an electrical charge capable enough of powering incredibly basic vessels, such as a potato battery (albeit, with much less critical thinking).

WEAKNESSES
  • Catch me CatchmECATCHME - Gambit's most obvious weakness is, of course, his mobility. With a complete dependence on navigating via management rails attached to surfaces, this severely limits the freedom of movement upon patrolling ships or bases. Even worse, however, is when the droid is faced with an area lacking a rail altogether. If he were to progress, he would need to forcefully detach himself, leaving himself at the complete mercy of anyone coming into contact with it. Unlike other droids, Aperture units rely on being carried by their handlers in order to be brought along on missions, and the utter lack of movement proves it near impossible to escape enemies when firmly grasped.
  • No Fingers - Unlike humanoid droids such as protocol or assassin droids, the Gambit lacks any appendage used to interact with, excluding the two handlebars he can fruitlessly wiggle. Not even with the utility arm astromechs possess, this leaves him without any way to feasibly carry or input specific things, and also means that, while more than capable of piloting them, he's not particularly useful at repairing starfighters.
  • Tiny and Insignificant- Aperture droids are relatively small in size, being able to comfortably fit in backpacks, which may aid in sneaking them within places, but their small stature means that it takes significantly less force to destroy them. A mere crush can leave Gambit grasping onto life, and while he's capable of surviving incredible heights and lethally scorching temperatures, he is still what many expertly trained hunters would call... target practice.
  • Corruption At 100% - A major downfall at the cost of producing such highly-human droids is their increased risk of corruption. Being subject to too much overwhelming material - be it physical, such as one too many rushed downloads and installations, or mentally, such as a traumatic experience at the forefront of battle - leads to the Aperture droid's core corrupting. Once corruption begins, the droid's primary functions begin failing, with the unit progressively forgetting its name, its memories, and its personality; until it's nothing but a frantic, broken shell obsessed with its prime directive. Corruption during early stages is salvageable if acted upon quickly, but an Aperture droid is too far gone at 50%, with the only option left being to destroy it. Corrupted units are a danger to droids around them, as their corruption can spread through contact or by sharing data ports. It is advised to discard your APS-series personality core immediately upon irreversible corruption.

APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY

Gambit is a small, spherical droid without any arms, legs, or semblance of limbs at all. He has several layers within his chassis, with his inner panel with his central optic, and the outer panel featuring the dual handlebars he has on either end of his body. On his sides are two exhaust ports that house his inner mechanisms. On his back, a data port is located, allowing to be plugged into access terminals.

Personality-wise, Gambit is very, very talkative, often in a friendly and conversational manner, resulting in him occasionally sounding rather annoying. He struggles with social cues and is unaware of how much he talks. On the surface, the droid may appear somewhat narcissistic and stuck-up, talking highly of himself with frequent brags and feats that have never happened. In reality, however, Gambit suffers from an inferiority complex, and constantly bigs himself up in order to override the feelings of inadequacy he truly has about himself. He has pitifully low self-esteem, opting never to talk about his feelings until a breaking point is reached, and will try to portray himself in the most positive of light at all times.

Cowardice plays a big part in his character, as the droid is fairly inexperienced with gruelling tasks. Wanting to help people as much as possible, he often bites off more than he can chew, resulting in often disastrous consequences. Due to his initial programming, Gambit isn't the brightest droid, having been manufactured and designed to make awful decisions, a factor that plays highly in his troubled self-worth.

BIOGRAPHY

Gambit is one of countless APS-series Personality droids, born from circumstances he can't exactly remember. Supposedly created for great purposes, Gambit lived his life unaware of the reason for his existence, but didn't much question or complain. He would be frequently attached to other droids and panels of starships by his handlers - he wasn't sure why, but it always gave him the possibility of making another friend. So he'd do the one thing he did best: talk and talk and talk, until he would always inevitably be pried off his new acquaintance and be returned to his stand. Gambit was sad to always see his friends go, but he was constantly reassured that they were better because of him.

He wasn't sure why, but one day, his handlers stopped showing up at his door. Days were spent alone in his stand, staring at blank, empty walls, talking to himself. It wasn't until one day that someone-- he can't remember who, but it certainly wasn't any of his handlers-- made it into his room and picked him up. Taking him to an area he'd never seen, Gambit's view flashed to black as he was soon deactivated.

Years following, the droid would finally reactivate alongside thousands of Aperture droids just like him. Each of them were given a management rail to navigate throughout the star cruiser they were situated on, and assigned a function. Gambit was granted the role of monitoring the ship's Relaxation Vault in order to watch the impossibly high number of organics placed in cryostasis. While he was saddened about never making any friends, he at least got to watch over the peaceful humans as the otherwise supposedly empty cruiser roamed the galaxy to a destination he was never informed of.

One rotation, the cruiser arrived at its stop. Gambit watched in curiosity as thousands of foreign lifeforms entered, and one by one, they collected each of the organics in cryosleep. Overhearing a conversation between some of them, the droid discovered that the stored organics were in fact captured freedom fighters scheduled for enslavement. Panicking, Gambit accessed one of the vaults and shut off its cryobed, awakening the human inside. Informing her of the situation, the droid would help her escape, guiding her throughout the cruiser as she avoided the chasing slavers. Eventually, the duo made it out, unable to free any of the others, but having survived the attack. Now on the run, the pair laid low as they travelled together across the planet. Years went by, with the droid and human bonding very closely. They were inseparable.

Finally, the human was returned to her family. Gambit was promised a place to stay, but he politely refused. Seeing the number of slavers still out there, and inspired from the thanks and well of happiness bubbling in his chassis from having saved the human woman, he knew what he wanted to do.

The droid set out in hopes of helping as many people as he could, blissfully unaware of his purpose as a droid of horrible decisions, designed to drain the intellect and capabilities of any droid or starship he was attached to.
