OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To provide a means of temporarily halting the effects of poisons or toxins until proper medical treatment can be obtained
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Name: AntiTox
  • Manufacturer: Lucerne Biological Systems
  • Affiliation: Directorate, Silver Jedi Concord, Lucerne Biological Systems customers
  • Market Status: Closed-Market
  • Modularity: Can be chemically tailored for proper effects on different species
  • Production: Mass-Produced
  • Material: Mix of proprietary gas-binders and other basic pharmaceulogical agents
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  • Classification: Drug
  • Method of Consumption: Orally, Injection, or topical patch. Can be consumed multiple times, albeit the more times it is used, the more the body suffers nutrition problems as the gas-binders may bind to and prevent the uptake of certain minerals and nutrients.
  • Average Life: 12 hours (on average)
  • Nutritional Value/Allergies/Side Effects/ Purpose: AntiTox has no nutritional value. As with many medicines, there is the small potential for minor allergy symptoms including itching and hives. AntiTox may hamper complex gas exchanges found in some species (such as beldons) and should not be given to them as AntiTox may then cause fatal reactions. Typical side effects include minorly increased respiratory and heart rates as well as increased sense of hunger. If taken for long periods of time (over a week), the user's body typically suffers significant malnutrition. AntiTox works by quickly binding to foreign molecules found within the host, thereby deactivating most toxins and poisons and allowing them to be safely excreted through sweat, feces, or urine.
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Broad-Spectrum Antidote: AntiTox uses a cocktail of gas-binders to be able to quickly interact with and lock-up a wide variety of different foreign molecules. This strategy is based on preserving what should naturally occur in the body, rather than on stopping a specific known threat. It does not tend to be as effective against a toxin or a poison as a specialized, dedicated antidote.
  • Variable Routes: AntiTox's gas-binders can be absorbed through ingestion of a pill or liquid, intravenous or intramuscular injection, or via topical patch. Each route has its advantages and disadvantages, with routes that are usually easier to administer often taking longer to get the full effect. Topical patches applied directly to a poisoned wound site (such as from a poisoned blade) will probably have a quicker reaction than an oral dose, though conversely, an oral dose would act quicker against poisoned food. In most instances though, intravenous injections, while the hardest to administer of the routes, is also very fast to act, making it the best suited for quickly freezing the effects of poisons and toxins.
STRENGTHS
  • Broad Spectrum Antidote: AntiTox has at least some effect against foreign molecules found within an organic's body.
  • Environmental Protection: AntiTox doesn't work just on intentional poisons, but can also provide relief against accidental environmental exposures, such as in the poisonous gases found in trace amounts on some worlds or from industrial accidents.
WEAKNESSES
  • Malnutrition: Being so broad-spectrum, AntiTox binds to almost any foreign molecule found within the body. This includes many molecules found in foodstuffs being digested in the stomach, as well as some legitimate medicines. Consequently, AntiTox is not a medicine that should be taken on a routine basis.
  • Master of None: As a jack of all trades type of drug, some of its gas-binding molecules may not always have an effect on some poisons or toxins, meaning that it oftentimes isn't as effect as a dedicated antidote for a specific poison.
DESCRIPTION
In a galaxy of intrigue, violence, and the unknown, poisons and toxins are almost always a potential though typically rare threat. With the sheer number of poisons available in the galaxy, it is difficult for most people to readily have a specific antidote available for every possibility. To that end, Lucerne Biological Systems introduced AntiTox as a potential remedy. While it does not typically have the same efficacy of a specific antidote, it is capable of deactivating most poisons and toxins to at least some degree. In this sense, AntiTox competes primarily other gas binder medicines and
antitoxin patches. Given this broad spectrum nature, AntiTox is often found in first aid kits or personal armor medicine dispensers of the well-prepared individual.
