Private Another Quiet Evening in Theed

Tavo was looking forward to seeing his sister, though he would have preferred to see her somewhere other than his apartment.

The place had been ready for some time already, which had not stopped him from finding reasons to check it again. His attention moved through the kitchen first, where one plate, one glass, one knife and one fork rested beside the sink, washed, dried and arranged neatly enough that there was very little left to improve. There was no second set tucked away for guests, no collection of mismatched crockery accumulated over the years, and certainly nothing resembling the sort of supplies required to entertain another person. Tavo owned what he needed and, until now, what he needed had generally been enough for one.

It was one of several reasons he had suggested an early dinner in Theed rather than attempting anything here.

He crossed the living area while checking his chronowatch, though there was no urgency in the gesture. Vira was not late, and there was still ample time before they needed to leave. His attention shifted instead to the small table beside the couch, which seemed slightly out of alignment with the rest of the room. Tavo adjusted it by perhaps half an inch, considered the result, then quietly returned it to where it had been in the first place.

The apartment offered little else to occupy him. Its furniture was sparse and deliberately practical, chosen because each piece served a purpose rather than because the room required filling. The walls were mostly bare, the surfaces clear, and nothing had been left lying around without reason. Through the partly open bedroom door, clothing had been folded and arranged with immaculate precision, shoes paired beneath the wardrobe, while his evening coat waited where he had placed it earlier.

Everything was exactly as it ought to be, which should have made the prospect of Vira seeing it easier.

Instead, Tavo found himself looking around once more.

It was not that he feared her judgement. Quite the opposite. He loved his sister dearly and had been genuinely looking forward to spending the evening with her. Dinner somewhere in Theed, perhaps a walk afterwards, and enough time to hear what she had been doing lately sounded considerably better than most ways he could have spent the night. Vira herself was welcome.

His home was another matter.

The apartment was one of the few places where Tavo made no effort to accommodate anyone but himself. There was no audience to read, no expectation to meet, no reason to alter the way he dressed, spoke or occupied the space. It was quiet because he preferred quiet, sparse because he had little desire for unnecessary possessions, and ordered because there was a particular comfort in knowing that everything would remain exactly where he had left it.

Inviting someone into that felt unexpectedly intimate, and Vira was perhaps the worst possible person to expect not to notice.

Tavo returned to the kitchen and picked up the cloth beside the sink. The bench was already clean, but he ran the cloth across it anyway, slowly working from one end to the other before pausing to inspect the surface. After a moment he went back over the same section a second time, only stopping when he realised he was considering a third.

A faint, resigned smile touched his expression as he set the cloth neatly beside the sink.

"Ridiculous."

Vira would arrive, she would almost certainly notice something he would rather she did not, and there was a very good chance she would comment on it. He would survive the indignity, they would leave for dinner, and the evening would continue as planned.

His chronowatch drew another glance before his attention shifted naturally toward the door, waiting for the knock he knew could not be far away.

Vira didn't knock.

She didn't need to. Whether her dear brother had installed bio-metric locks to recognize her or SHE had while he was away on one of his rendezvous missions, who was to say? The door to his apartment on Theed swooshed open without breaking her heeled-footstep stride. She wore a stylish crimson-wine dress, length falling to mid-calf. The latest shoes.

Very expensive.

A golden cuff along her upper arm and her signet ring. Hair was stylishly pinned, a few well-place auburn strands loose to frame her face. Full-lips ticked upward in a soft, very small smile, only reserved for Tavo. The same crimson color as her dress. She stepped forward and wrapped him in a light hug. As if showing physical affection or emotion of any kind was painful for her. A light kiss to each cheek, careful not to actually plant her lipstick on his skin. The normal Quilan greeting.

"Good to see you, Tav." A childhood nickname. One she'd never bothered changing. She stepped back.

Then those amber eyes shifted to take in the place he'd been calling home.

A light sniff.

Lips going back to neutral.

"This is a....choice. Have you been robbed?" Genuine concern.

Tavo had been expecting a knock, so the door opening without one earned Vira a brief look as she crossed the threshold without breaking stride. Thankfully, Tavo recognised her quickly, not mistaking her for an intruder. Whatever question he had about his apartment's security could wait.

His expression softened immediately.

"Vira."

He returned the embrace easily, one arm settling around her before accepting the familiar kisses to either cheek. The use of Tav brought a small smile with it, as it always did.

"Good to see you too."

His gaze dipped briefly toward her shoes.

"Those are new."

Then her attention shifted past him, and Tavo knew exactly what was coming.

He followed her inspection of the apartment with considerably less enthusiasm. The sparse furniture, bare surfaces and almost complete absence of anything decorative had never bothered him. The single plate, glass and set of cutlery beside the sink suddenly seemed rather more conspicuous than usual.

Her sniff earned a raised eyebrow.

"No." A quiet laugh escaped him as he glanced around. "And before you ask, the thieves did not take the rest of the furniture. This is actually how I live."

There was more amusement than defensiveness in it, though he still found himself crossing toward the kitchen and moving the cloth beside the sink a little farther from the edge. The moment he realised what he was doing, his eyes shifted back to Vira--

"Don't. It needed moving."

--however, the warning was undermined almost entirely by the smile beginning to form.

Tavo had been looking forward to seeing her. That was never the issue. Vira was one of the few people whose company he sought without needing a reason beyond wanting it. Having her here, however, was different. The apartment was one of the only places in his life arranged entirely for himself, without consideration for appearances, visitors or anyone else's expectations.

Unfortunately, his sister was exactly the sort of person who would notice what that revealed.

Tavo collected his coat from where it laid nearby and settled it over one arm.

"I have everything I need," he assured her, glancing once toward the functional home setting before adding, "provided nobody unexpectedly bursts through my door."

At that, his eyes moved toward the door she had so effortlessly entered.

"Which reminds me, at some point you're going to explain why my lock recognises you."

He gestured toward the exit with an easy smile.

"Preferably over dinner, where there are enough plates for both of us. Shall we?"

"Don't. It needed moving."

"Hmm," was all she offered. Hawkish eyes watching him closely and silently. Her brother brought out more emotions in herself than anyone else. More than she'd even admit to herself.

Worry. Worry that he wasn't doing okay.

A natural fondness because she was proud at what he was doing here. Well, maybe not with his poor decoration choices in apartments but his actual work. He'd always been the more noble of the pair. At least been able to choose that for himself. And she wasn't jealous about it. It just puzzled her.

An innocent look as he questioned her about his door. A mild one-shouldered shrug. No commitment to give him any answers whatsoever.

"Well, the private car is waiting downstairs. Unless we're walking?" She strode back out his door and down the corridor to the repulsorlift. Already gathering a mental list in her head of things she would be ordering for his apartment.

"Tch. Tavo. I swear on Quila's Ninth Goddess if this place has 'shack' or 'food truck' in the name you will be eating dinner by yourself. I cannot afford to get food poisoning. I'm in the middle of a major deal and work has been hectic."

Her other, other job.

Tavo watched the innocent shrug with open suspicion.

"Of course."

He followed her into the corridor, locking the apartment behind them before falling into step beside her. He would fix that later.

"It seems like a nice evening. Let's walk."

Theed was pleasant enough at this hour, and the restaurant was close enough that taking a private car felt excessive. Besides, after letting Vira inspect his apartment, he felt entitled to choose the route.

Her warning about the restaurant drew a quiet laugh.

"You have very little faith in me. I promise there will be a chef involved."

He glanced toward her as they reached the repulsorlift. He raised an eyebrow.

"I'm more surprised you're on Naboo at all."

That part was genuine. Vira's work had a habit of whisking her elsewhere, usually somewhere with considerably more commerce and considerably less patience. Theed was not one of those places, typically.

"Is everything okay? I haven't seen you on any meeting lists, so I assume it's not Chancellor related."

Tavo let that sit, giving his sister time to answer - or, as he expected, to deflect. But he remained genuinely interested, especially in her well-being.

The repulsorlift doors opened and he gestured her through first. He followed and slipped into his coat, his expression softening slightly as he looked across at her. It took no time at all to cross the small foyer and exit the building, and then the pair were on the cool Theed City streets, merging with the pedestrian traffic.

"Restaurant is this way," Tavo said with a smile. "It's not far."

He glanced down to her fancy and likely uncomfortable shoes.

"How have you been?" Tavo asked, as he breathed in the fresh air. He glanced back to Vira. "I mean really."

“Do you have little faith in me?” Head canter to the side yet so slightly, as she parroted back what he said. Looking at her brother. At least the lift music wasn’t completely abysmal. All in all. It was a nice enough apartment complex. Otherwise, she would’ve been trying to convince her brother to move. No reason to ruin dinner conversation over that, now.

Her expression softened. For a small quick moment. As they went outside. The air cooling her skin. Brushing up against her bare neck. “Everything is where it should be. On my end. Have you spoke to mother lately? She does not understand my current employment but I have my reasons. Have you heard of Tycho Irogane and his budding industry?”

Others on the street gave the pair space as they walked along. Whether it was because of the very presence Vira projected or Tavo was hard to say.

Tavo gave her a sidelong look at the echoed question, the corner of his mouth lifting as the lift carried them down.

"Enough faith to know when you're avoiding one."

The doors opened onto the cooler evening air, and he fell into step beside her as they moved out toward the street. Theed had settled into that quieter part of the night, with traffic thinned and warm light spilling from restaurants and shopfronts along the way.

"Not recently enough. I should."

Tycho's name drew another glance her way as they crossed beneath one of the lamps.

"I've heard the name. Not enough to pretend I know the details."

He adjusted his pace slightly around a pair coming the other way before looking back to Vira.

"How much do you know about him, and what exactly do I need to know?"

Vira glanced around. Idly tugging at one of her earrings. Her brother would notice she was making sure they weren’t being overheard. Heeled footsteps continued clicking down the walk without missing a beat.

“He’s a dandy bastard with pale eyes. He has a budding mining business. We were classmates at Theed University. I’m his assistant which I’m sure he loves. Considering I had higher marks than him at Uni.”

Fingers fell back to her side and away from fidgeting. “All is well, though, Tav. Come. Don’t give me that look. Tycho is someone I am perfectly capable of handling.”

Tavo caught the sweep of Vira's attention around them, along with the hand at her earring, but made nothing of it. His own gaze travelled briefly across the street before returning to her as they continued on.

"His assistant?" There was enough amusement in the question to suggest that particular arrangement interested him almost as much as Tycho himself. "I'm sure you've been very restrained about those higher marks."

They rounded the next corner, leaving the quieter residential stretch behind for a broader avenue lined with evening traffic and illuminated shopfronts. Farther down, beyond another intersection and several blocks of pedestrians, the restaurant's frontage was just visible beneath the lights.

At Vira's reassurance, Tavo gave her the look anyway.

"I'm sure you can handle him. I was asking what I needed to know, not whether I should rescue you from your employer." His attention shifted briefly toward the restaurant ahead before returning to her. "Though now I'm curious how you went from outperforming him at university to working for him."

They had barely made it another few metres when something struck the stone facade beside them hard enough to throw pale fragments across the pavement where Vira had been walking.

Tavo reacted before there was time to decide whether the shot had missed by chance or design--

"Vira!"

--and one hand caught her arm as he turned them toward the nearest break in the buildings, a narrow service alley that offered solid cover from the opposite side of the street. Another blaster bolt struck somewhere behind them as they cleared the avenue, close enough that there was little argument for remaining exposed.

He released her once they were beyond the immediate line of fire and took in the alley properly.

A man near the far end had already pushed away from the wall. Another emerged from beside a recessed service doorway, rolling one shoulder beneath a dark jacket with the air of someone who had been waiting longer than expected. Neither showed any surprise at seeing them, and the sound of footsteps entering the alley behind them completed the picture.

Tavo's gaze passed once between the three men before settling on the nearest.

Four sentients with violent intent.

"Well. That shot seemed deliberate."

"I'm sure you've been very restrained about those higher marks."
A low tut left her lips. “Please stop. It’s like you know me,” voice drier than sand on Tatooine but a glint of humor in those amber eyes. Eyes zeroed in on the flashing sign of a restaurant ahead.

Oh? Was it Eleven Maddison Park? Color Vira impressed with her little brother.

“I have my reasons. And you’re right, I certainly do not ever need rescui—gah,” she yelped as shards of duracreer flew upward just where she’d been. Those shards missing her skin by inches. His arm pulled her and they had a moment to breath in the cover of the alley. Heart hammered in her chest. But her fingers were already digging in her purse, taking out a small, sleek cylinder.

Her eyes looked Tavo up and down. Quickly assessing him for injuries. Even though he wasn’t a little boy anymore. He’d always be her’s to protect. “Your friends or mine,” she whispered to him. She stepped around him, flicking her wrist as that cylinder expanded into a long, elegant thin sword.

“Gentlemen. How very rude of you to interrupt what was becoming a lovely night.” Vira stalked toward the two from the back of the alley.

“Schutta whore. All you had to do was sign the papers.” He charged.

Huh. Most definitely for her then. She raised her sword like the professional fencer she was. Slicing and swiping. Even as the other one tried coming at her side. Those other two at the entrance of the alley went swinging toward Tavo.

She ducked, missing a punch. Worried eyes checking on Tavo. It was enough for one of the ruffians to tackle her from the side. Getting inside her guard.

The answer to Vira's question arrived before Tavo could offer one.

"Yours, apparently."

The first man came at him from the alley entrance with enough commitment to make the response simple. Tavo stepped inside the swing, caught the attacking arm and turned with it, taking the man's balance before folding him into a tight grapple. A short strike beneath the ribs took some of the fight out of him while Tavo kept control of the wrist and shoulder.

"We don't need to do this, gentlemen," Tavo said as he adjusted his footing to hold the grapple. "Walk away."

But the second man was already closing.

Tavo shifted his weight, keeping the first between them for a moment before forcing him down toward one knee. He had no interest in crippling anyone if he could avoid it. They were hired muscle, apparently, and he was more than capable of putting men like this on the ground without leaving them there permanently.

Movement farther along the alley caught his attention.

Vira had been tackled.

Tavo's eyes narrowed; the man in Tavo's grip barely had time to register the change.

With a crunch, Tavo drove his forehead into the bridge of the man's face, released the arm and stamped hard through the outside of his knee. The joint gave beneath the thug, crunching sickeningly. As the man collapsed sideways, Tavo caught the back of his clothing and hauled him forward into the elbow that came down across the back of his skull.

He hit the pavement and stayed there.

By then the second attacker was almost on him.

Tavo turned into the approach. The first elbow crashed across the man's jaw before he could complete his swing. A second drove hard beneath the ribs, followed by a sharp wrench of the wrist that forced the elbow past its limit, hyperextending the joint painfully. Tavo stepped through him, twisting and cracking the bones of the forearm, even as he struck out with an elbow against the thug's ear. The thug's head jerked from the impact, his body went limp, and he dropped beside the other before he could even cry out.

His attention was already back on Vira.

"Vira!"

Tavo broke into a run toward her.

Vira was the most annoyed at how her dress was probably ruined now. It was a one of a kind. And very expensive. She felt the thug’s arm wrap around her throat as he pinned her on top of him. His arm squeezing her lungs.

“Should’ve just signed the deal,” he whispered harshly in her ear.

She almost laughed. Getting her sword arm free from his grasp, she swatted his leg.

He yowled in pain as the metal sliced a long red ribbon into his skin. A sharp elbow went into his gut next. Then she rolled and stood even as he tried trapping her ankle. With a flick of her wrist, the sword severed his wrist from hand.

Then he really screamed. The second one she’d been fighting who tried to recover took one look and ran. “Tavo,” she said dangerously low. “Is he enough for questioning or do we need one of the others, too?”

Tavo reached Vira as the remaining man broke for the far end of the alley. He watched the thug for another few seconds to see if he was repositioning. The man kept running.

"Let him go. We have three."

The shooter was another matter. Tavo glanced toward the alley mouth and the buildings beyond it before looking Vira over properly.

"Are you hurt?"

Whatever answer came, the amount of blood beside the man at her feet needed dealing with first. Thug or not, Tavo wouldn't let someone bleed out after a fight. Even if the schleb had attacked his sister. Tavo crouched, pulled the belt free from the injured man's waist and wrapped it tightly around the forearm above the wound. He drew it down until the bleeding slowed, secured it, then checked the man's condition without offering him much opportunity to interfere.

"Stay still." Tavo warned. His comm was already in his other hand and activated. "Halor to Republic Security. I need a secure collection team and medical support at my location. Three suspects for pickup, one with a serious limb injury. A fourth fled the scene."

Tavo stood up and looked toward the street again.

"The shooter who opened fire on us is still unaccounted for," he advised, as he watched the adjacent buildings for movement. "Treat the area as active until you've cleared the western buildings of my location."

He gave the coordinates and ended the transmission once they were acknowledged.

The two men Tavo had put down remained closer to the mouth of the alley, while the third now had enough pressure on the wound to buy him time until medical support arrived. Their weapons and commlinks could wait where they were for Security to catalogue properly.

Tavo put the comm away and turned to Vira.

"He's enough for questioning," he said, as he motioned to the injured man. He raised his eyebrows at Vira. "Now, what exactly were you supposed to sign?"

Vira took a cloth from her pocket and carefully wiped it down her sword's blade. Making sure her weapon was clean before she retreacted it and place it back in her purse. She could feel a few bruises begining to form on the outside of her thigh and hip from where she'd hit the pavement from the tackle. And along her throat. All things considered?

She wasn't hurt in the way that mattered.

"I'll be fine. Are you okay?" Her eyes snapped away from the goons to properly look over her brother. Eyes careful.

They were so different. Here he even tried to prevent death. Whereas she? She would've gladly let the guy bleed out. She would've gladly let them all die. They'd tried to kill her. They'd tried to hurt Tavo. Death was the least they deserved. One day, she hoped her brother's morales wouldn't end up getting him killed.

She looked down, seeing a stain upon her crimons dress.

A light sniff.

"My dress on the other hand? Ruined." A glance to the goon still whimpering about his missing appendage. "Would you like to speak up for the class?"

He sniveled and clutched his arm.

"No? Hmm. Shame." Amber eyes settled back on her brother. "It was a deal that would've benefited the Hutts greatly. And would've tanked our family's business."
