Private Another Flame

VARIN MORTIFER

He felt the shift of weight, then the planting of the staff over his back. Aerik was using his weight and balance to deny the lift.

Varin also noticed something else. The flames did not bother him. A smirk appeared on his face.

Finally, someone he knew could take it.

“Are Lechners always so defensive? I want to see you fight!”

Varin shifted his free arm, drawing it in close. He rammed his forearm into Aerik's ribs, the range of motion limited, but the blow landed hard.

In the moment of distraction Varin would jolt his upper body upwards, his hand moving to grip the staff. Not to steal but to hold and control.

“Avoidance will only take you so far.”

His gaze swept over him, his eye taking in the very shape of his force signature. Something was different about him, but he could not quite tell what it was.

“You’re holding back. You said you would show me the might of a Lechner. I have yet to see it. I have briefly seen what your father is capable of, I want to see that from you.”

It was not said in a way of mockery, he wanted to see Aerik push himself. If he had to force it out of him, then he would.

Varin drove the forearm in tight. The strike landed clean against Aerik’s ribs, short range and hard.

Aerik did not answer it.

When Varin surged upward to claim the staff, his grip closing to hold and control, Aerik moved.

His hand released the shaft without hesitation and came down to Varin’s arm instead, fingers locking in just above the elbow. His other hand shifted from the staff and took him at the shoulder, closing both points of contact at once.

His stance dropped.

The lift came from his hips, not his arms.

Aerik stepped through the space Varin had opened, turning his body as he drove upward and across, pulling at the arm while pushing through the shoulder. The motion did not pause. It carried straight through him.

Varin’s feet left the ground.

Aerik did not hold him.

He turned with it and sent him across the room, releasing at the height of the motion and letting the momentum carry him the rest of the way.

In one instant, Varin had gripped onto the staff, in the next instant he felt the grip of his opponent and then a lift.

His feet had lost purchase as he was violently taken to the air, momentum carried his body slamming hard into the wall, a sharp breath escaped him as some practice equipment flattered to the ground.

Varin rolled right after the impact, stabilizing himself in a dropped knee position. Another drop of blood trailed from his lip, this time the blood seemed to boil when it hit the ground. The brown color of his eye slowly shifted in color, bleeding into a bright burning orange.

That was much better.

He thought to himself.

The force surged through his body, muscles tensed, the runes flared brightly on his body. With a quick burst of speed, his body nearly becoming a blur, he rushed back to Aerik, a quick jab came in from below, then fluidly followed a cross elbow from up high.

His eyes never left any part of him for any sort of retaliation. His form, though still planted like stone, still held a fluidity of combat experience in hand to hand.

Varin came off the wall and back into motion without pause. The surge was immediate. The distance closed in a rush as he stepped in low, the jab driving up from beneath before the elbow followed high.

Aerik did not step away.

As the jab came in, his hand dropped and turned it aside with a short motion at the wrist, redirecting it off his center without chasing it. The elbow followed. His other arm rose and met it before it could settle, forearm catching forearm as he stepped in rather than out, closing the space Varin had just created.

He stayed tight.

Varin’s speed did not break his footing. Aerik adjusted with him, each movement answered in kind, each line met and redirected without giving ground. His shoulders remained square, his balance set beneath him as he matched the rhythm without forcing it.

When the elbow finished its path, Aerik was already inside it.

His lead hand slid down along Varin’s arm to keep it from resetting. His weight shifted forward through his stance as his rear hand came up from his center, driving straight toward Varin’s face in a compact palm heel, the motion short and direct from the space he had already taken.

The close quarters combat only drew closer as Aerik met him head on with his offensive, redirecting the first attack and suffocating the second one in a vice like hold over his arm. Then his palm drove forward towards his face Varin’s head drew back just in time to avoid the palm strike aimed for his jaw, he could feel the slight wind behind the attack and the force that came with it.

His finger flicked towards him, recalling the blade to his hand, it whistled as it approached towards Aerik’s back.

Varin would only use it as a distraction for him to try to avoid before he pressed further in an offensive maneuver, his knee pulled upwards towards Aerik’s sternum. Not once, not twice but three times to break the hold and drive the wind from his lungs. The force ran through his muscles increasing his strength even further as each knee answered with a harsher blow.

The runes on his body pulsed once then flared a constant orange hue like a furnace.

His palm drove forward as a powerful force push erupted from his palm towards Aerik’s ribs.

Varin slipped the palm and recalled the blade. Aerik heard it cutting back toward him as the distance stayed tight. The knees came up in quick succession, driving toward his center with force behind them.

Aerik stayed in.

The first knee rose and he shifted his hips to take it off his center. The second followed and forced a tighter adjustment, his grip changing as he kept Varin from extending cleanly. By the third he was already moving forward again, closing the space and breaking the rhythm before it could settle.

The blade came in behind him.

Aerik turned with it, shoulder angling as he stayed tight to Varin instead of giving it a clean path. It passed close as he kept his position.

The Force push followed.

It struck his ribs and drove him a half step back. His footing shifted with it as he turned through the impact rather than taking it square, letting it carry across him.

He stepped back in immediately.

His hand stayed at the back of Varin’s neck, keeping him from resetting as his other arm came across and caught at the wrist that had driven the push. He pulled down and in, folding Varin forward as he stepped to the outside of his leg.

His foot hooked behind Varin’s ankle as he attempted to take his base again, this time driving through the turn instead of meeting him straight on.

As soon as Aerik drew closer Varin acted, he felt the touch come back to the back of his neck and his arm swung under Aerik's, elbow meeting the bend of his arm enough to cause a bend.

Aerik's foot hooked behind Varin's ankle, an attempt to take away his base. But the force that flowed through his body held him firm.

Varin's other wrist was grapple, while his free arm had wrapped around Aerik's, hand just under his bicep. It kept him from full control. But it also meant they were now tangled.

Varin's footing planted into the floor as he drove his shoulder forward along with his body to knock Aerik off his center. A quick adjustment of of his arm then pulled Aerik toward him while Varin twisted his body, hoisting Aerik on his hip turning with the momentum as it drove Aerik towards the floor.

Varin drove in and caught the entanglement well. Aerik felt the shift in pressure as the shoulder came forward and his center was drawn into the turn. The hip came underneath him as Varin sought to carry the throw through.

Aerik did not fight the rotation.

He moved with it.

As his feet left the ground, his grip changed. The arm Varin had trapped did not resist but slid deeper through the hold as Aerik turned with the momentum instead of against it. His free hand caught at Varin’s shoulder as his body twisted in the air.

The throw did not finish clean.

Aerik planted a foot against Varin’s hip as they turned and pushed off it, using the height of the lift to carry himself over rather than down. His body rolled across the line of the throw, shoulders turning through the motion until he came behind Varin instead of beneath him.

His feet found the ground first.

Before Varin could recover from the broken throw, Aerik moved.

One arm cinched across his upper chest while the other caught at the wrist. He turned sharply with the position and drove a knee up toward Varin’s back, using the motion to force him forward as he sought to take control of the exchange.

The events that followed during the throw was like a blur to him. Aerik had found his way to somewhat soften the throw and pivot in his own direction. A clean escape from the momentum that carried.

Varin felt the pressure of the knee on his back as his arm was forced back.

Varin grunted with the pain at first, but instead of fighting the hold his body relaxed. A breath left him.

Then a billowing of smoke rose towards Aerik's eyes and nose, aiming to coat his senses with the sight of blackness and smoke. The cloud was thick, almost choking.

Varin would use the distraction to wrap his arm around Aerik's ankle adding a quick and violent shove with his legs in an attempt to break his foundation.
