Private Angel, Will You Do Me a Favor?

"It's a shame," Verity said thoughtfully. "I get the sense just from the brief few minutes we've been talking that you would make an excellent politician. And yet, fate has moved you in another direction. Not that being a Jedi isn't a truly worthwhile calling. I don't have the gift, of course, but I do have eyes."

Verity shut her computer screen and clasped her hands in front of her.

"As far as how I'd like to see this go. You let me go where I need to go and when. I give you notice, to the maximum extent practicable, of where I intend to go and when and why. My office coordinates with Watch Commander Dane on that front so that he can do whatever sweeps he feels he needs to do in advance. You accompany me when possible and try not to scare people I need to talk to and, you know, don't follow me into the ladies room."

She took out a notepad and began scribbling some notes.

"And I'll have meetings. Some of them you should follow me into. Some of them -- probably the ones in this building -- are likely to not require you to be there. But... and don't take this the wrong way ...you should not speak. Here, in this office, if you have concerns, by all means. But in any meetings outside? I'm the Senator. I can't have someone in my delegation pulling faces or talking out of turn."

Verity paused a moment, her hands linking together. "I hope that doesn't sound -- strident, opinionated, and careerist."

"Oh, heavens no, I do not have the patience for politics." The smile remained. "I'd put a number of people through the wall, if they tried to pull the shit that you have to deal with on a daily basis."

The smile was still there but something would tell Verity that he wasn't joking about it.

Reading through the dossier later would confirm.

Tristan was one of the good guys. He was a staunch supporter of the Light, he put his body between mortal danger and innocents more times than people could count. But Trist had openly advocated for the eradication of the Sith with the dispassion one normally reserves for nails.

It was not difficult to imagine him being less than amused by someone's nonsense and decide to teach them a lesson in object permanence.

He listened quietly to her vision on this arrangement. It didn't truly shock him that the security detail had been less than happy with her. A lot of risk, a lot of openings for an outspoken Senator to get herself killed.

"You will find, Senator, that I am perfectly content to meditate on the state of the Galaxy while you have your meetings. No word from me, unless it is requested or necessary within the context of your security and I assure you my facial expressions will be perfectly in check."

Eyebrows rose in amusement.

"I know the Jedi are seen as the fun police, but I am not the judgemental sort."

When it came to politics anyway. In any other context that statement was hilarious.

Verity paused a moment, her hands linking together. "I hope that doesn't sound -- strident, opinionated, and careerist."

"You don't? But those are most likely the qualities I will appreciate most in you, ma'am."

Okay, now he must be teasing her, certainly.

"It's the people who think they aren't suited for politics that make the best ones, in my experience. I was never meant to sit in the Senate, after all. It was an opportunity that opened up and I found that I quite enjoyed the cut and thrust of it. But I suppose you get the cut and thrust in your day job." She nodded towards his lightsaber.

As for his insinuation that her being strident, opinionated, and careerist were the things he appreciated most about her, she only offered a confidential half-smile. "Give it time, Master Jedi. Give it time."

She glanced at her watch briefly, then stretched in her seat, rolling her neck. "My philosophy is this: if a Sith truly wants me dead, one way or another, they will get me dead. Were you at Thyferra? My experience there taught me that there are no safeguards, no defenses, no preparations that the average Sith will not be able to cut through, like a hot knife through butter. The laws of physics do not seem to apply to them, somehow. If they want me, they will get me."

Verity frowned a moment. "Which makes me think the bigger threat are the mere mortals. I've made no friends in the Naboo political establishment with my outrageous suggestion that the law applies to the King of Naboo just like it would apply to the rest of us. People can be so touchy about these things. And I wouldn't put it past the Trade Federation to try something sinister. But I guess that all remains to be seen."
