STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
Strengths
* Fairly intelligent, but not a rocket scientist. Smart enough to tell when someone is trying to fool him, but not clever enough to understand warp theory.
Andre does not have a particularly wide vocabulary, but his mind is sharper than the average citizen.
* Cares deeply about people, moved to action when he sees suffering.
* He is observant, always noting the appearance and body language of the people around him.
* Brave. He won't back away from tough situations or things he may be afraid of. (strangely enough, this was the meaning of his name, Andre).
* Quick thinking and problem solving: Andre can work out a straightforward and logical solution to most dilemmas.
The problem with politics is, people are not straightforward...
* Teetotal, reasonably strong though not super-athletic. He has no health problems.
* Good stamina, can run for a while without tiring.
* Reasonably proficient with a blaster (pistol only), enough to look after himself in combat if necessary.
Weaknesses
* Sometimes he comes across as belligerent
* Often short tempered and irritable
* Brash and outspoken, Andre will not tolerate fools gladly.
* Unable to control himself when he sees what he perceives as injustice.
* Impatient. Andre will not put up with time wasters, sycophants, or anyone who causes delays to actions that could prevent suffering.
APPEARANCE:
Andre is one of the least aesthetically pleasing people you could possibly imagine.
Most of his teeth are crooked, and his nose is enormous.
His hair is thinning and unkempt, and Andre's eyes are often bloodshot with deep bags around them.
Although he is only in his thirties, Andre has a severely aged look, borne of the stress and fatigue brought on by his work.
His friends often tease him by saying he looks more old and wrinkly than a 100 year old Dressellian. (In reality, he only has small wrinkles in his forehead).
In terms of dress and appearance, this guy would normally look quite at home in the dirtiest grubbiest bar you have ever been to.
BIOGRAPHY:
Andre was born into relative poverty as the son of a young couple who had to leave their homeworld and settle on Eol Sha, a nearby planet where mining and drinking at the local cantina were the only things to do. The workers at the refinery were paid very little, and the conditions were harsh.
At least they could afford food and shelter, though. Not all on Eol Sha were so fortunate.
Andre had a lonely and dull childhood. There were very few children in Quaketown, one of the worst locations on Eol Sha for seismic activity, which on this world is really saying something, and those children were often involved in violent and criminal activities.
His parents gave him a safe and loving childhood, which was an achievement considering the town (a settlement really) was a glorified slum.
His main hobbies whilst growing up were to either read adventure stories on the Holonet, or to practice shooting targets with his fathers blaster pistol (trained and supervised by his dad, of course).
In terms of reading material, as he became a teenager, the suffering Andre saw in the slums of Quaketown moved him to read fantasy stories of superheroes who would rescue people.
He began to fantasize about becoming a Jedi or some other kind of powerful person one day, someone who could put right all the wrongs in the world.
Maybe even bring peace and happiness to everyone in the galaxy.
Whilst Andre's father discouraged wasting time on such frivolous ideas and fantasy stories, he observed that his son did have a genuine concern for those less fortunate than himself.
Andre's dad even saw his young son stashing away parts of his dinner at times, then distributing the leftovers to the homeless and disabled on the streets, giving his own food to feed those who could no longer work or afford to get medical treatment.
Having always believed in the rule of law and the power of democracy, James Flux taught his son about the good work that a Republic Senator could do, showing Andre examples of local systems with planets that had slowly grown into safer and more peaceful places to live, thanks to various laws that had been passed and Republic soldiers who had worked to clear out the scum and villainy.
"But we are a Republic world, dad. So why do the gangs rule our streets. Why are we forced to cower in our houses at night and listen to the screams of men and women?! Why do starving people sit in the streets, whilst these Republic Senators you tell me about no doubt eat their fancy meals and drink Alderaanian wine. From what I see on the Holonet, they do not look underfed, and there clothes are rich and finely embroidered!!
Why do they not seem to care about the suffering on worlds like our own? We are their people, yet all the Republic government does is take the resources and let their own citizens starve to death and be terrorized by gangs!
Why should I put any faith at all in political processes, or in this supposedly wonderful Galactic Republic that you speak so highly of?".
Once he had allowed his son to vent his anger (he recognised his wife Sarah's inner fire in Andre's eyes during that zealous rant against injustice. Like mother, like son).
James calmly replied:
" Because without a strong and well supported democracy, we would be completely overwhelmed by the evil and selfishness of any individual that came to power. Putting our faith in the rule of those put there by the majority of people, who work for the good of the majority, is the only hope we have.
Always remember this, my son."
Andre would never forget.
But the burning in his heart when he thought of all those who would be killed by thugs that night, or spend another day suffering without proper medical care, would not die out.
Andre continued to help people, as well as helping to care for his mother who had become quite ill. He did the housework and cooking, also when he reached working age and had left the only educational establishment on Eol Sha, he took a part time job at the refinery that his mother had worked in, up until her health failed her. This supplemented his fathers wage as a shuttle pilot, and allowed them to get by well enough, compared to all the poor souls who could barely afford to survive.
In his spare time, Andre feverishly studied everything he could find relating to politics.
He even did a course over the Holonet which, according to his father, would allow Andre to one day go on to become a politician if he wished to.
Unbeknownst to Andre, his mother had taken out a life insurance policy with a powerful company within Republic space.
When she died, suddenly and horribly at the end of a battle with a mysterious and undiagnosable illness, James found the files regarding the policy on her personal computer.
The amount would more than pay for him to go to the university on Lordd and become a qualified politician.
His father, though grieving deeply as they both were over this tragic loss, strongly encouraged Andre to take this opportunity.
On the last morning they spent together before Andre left the planet at the age of 21, James gave his son what was (unknown to them) to be his memorable last words.
"Only by contending with challenges that seem to be beyond your strength to handle at the moment can you grow.
You must move forward. Leave this dreary existence behind you.
Forget me, forget your childhood on Eol Sha. Me and your mother... We have played our part. In raising you, we have changed the world. When I look at you, I know I have achieved my life's dream.
Now you must do the same.
One day, my son, you will change the galaxy."
A month later, James Flux was killed in the local cantina.
The same punk who broke Andre's nose in a fight three years earlier, started trouble with his father. The man dared to insult Andre, his mother and the family name.
When they were pulled apart, the knife the punk was carrying was embedded deep in James's chest.
The nearest hospital was many miles away. Andre's dad bled to death.
Some witnesses reported that he cried out Andre's name, just once, before he died.
Maybe he had wanted to tell his son something, something important or trivial.
Nobody will ever know.
The news hit Andre hard.
For a few months, he took up heavy drinking in an attempt to drown the grief and the pain, but he stopped once he realised he was wasting his life.
He became teetotal from that day onward.
His father deserved better.
His mother deserved better.
Rather than wallowing in self pity and beating himself up over things he could not change, such as his father dying in part due to the lack of hospitals on Eol Sha, he would make damn sure that his parents had not spent their lives for nothing. His work to change the galaxy would be their legacy.
Years later, Andre was qualified to become a Senator and returned to Eol Sha, determined to make a difference.
A series of stirring public speeches, driven by the skill and confidence Andre had gained through his education on Lordd, won him the public confidence.
He promised to represent the workers interests in the Senate.
As he was the only political representative they could realistically send to the Senate, and with almost the entire working population supporting his campaign, Andre was appointed as a Senator to represent Eol Sha.
He only wished his parents could have been there to see this incredible achievement.
He owed it all to them.
Although he left his childhood home to become a Senator, Andre would never forget where the money to fund his education had come from.
More importantly, Andre would never forget his mothers compassion, her endless love for him and for others.
He could never forget his fathers strength in the face of adversity, his teachings and the unending faith in democracy.
He would fight (politically) to defend the weak and give a voice to those considered too lowly to address the Senate directly themselves.
Most of all, he would never forget that he's just an ordinary man from Quaketown. A man raised in a community that needed a hero.
Andre would not rest until everyone on Eol Sha, and on every world outside of 'the privileged few' in the Core Worlds, lived in prosperity and safety from crime. He did some good work, to some extent revitalising the economy and getting Eol Sha some financial help and relief.
One day the Republic fell, an inevitable result led to by a chain of events, like a domino effect starting at the crippling war with the One Sith, and followed by a corrosive blend of political corruption and incompetence that finally saw the whole thing break apart.
Even after his career as a Republic Senator had so abruptly ended, Andre was determined to see his people and his home protected. So when the Dominion came, the people of Eol Sha were fully in support when Andre put forward that they should join the Dominion as a colony world. Andre would represent them in the Dominion Senate, acting in a sense as leader of the small colony. He would see to it that they were all looked after. This would be a new purpose for him, a goal that Andre's parents (had they still been alive) would have believed made all their struggles worthwhile.
