And then the witchdoctor he told me what to do...

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian gawked at the giant mushrooms. The route he’d taken to find Serendipity had taken him through several stands of mushrooms but they were much smaller. These were frighteningly large and mixed among them were pitcher plants with pitfalls large enough to swallow a man.

So far the sensors in the biocontainment compartment were reporting negative indicating no leaks in the canister. Packed tight in the foam as it was, Ian doubted they would have any problems unless he crashed into, oh, say… a giant mushroom.

He sensed Seren calming the force sensitive fungi with the force and was surprised as he had idea she had force abilities. He studied the calming influence she was projecting and began to emulate it as best he could. Needless to say he planned to do exactly as she instructed – he would stay close and watch her movements. Thinking of the movements he saw at the sink hole, he could think of no better way to spend an evening.

Her eyes kept a careful watch on the scan for Ian and the distance between them, he had kept to her path and moved with skill. Her heart rate, however, had not subsided at all and probably would not until they had the canister secured in the isolation chamber. Regardless of this, Seren remained calm and focused, it would not do to have an accident or incident at this point but her knowledge of the area would provide true and soon they came to the district of the water farms.

Seren pushed the speeder forward, the faster pace providing means to catch up time and take the danger away from the village. She led them both around the village and across the open grass plains to her farm. As her home came in view of the scanner and her vision she allowed a smile to cross her face.

"Ian, we will be there in ten minutes, is everything ok back there?", she said through the com and patching the co-ordinates to his system.

The Gian came to a halt at the back of her home, immediately Seren climbed out and ran to the back door and punched in the security code on the pad. She entered leaving the door open for Ian and went straight to the isolation chamber. Yes there would be plenty of room for the canister and it would be safe until her father came to dispose of it. She returned outside to assist Ian to bring it inside.

She stood waiting by back door for him to arrive.

Ian was almost disappointed when they left the giant mushroom forest. It was a magical place and shimmered in a translucence that defied logic. He examined the region of the water farms and its small community with curiosity; but, he felt the need to secure their cargo as soon as possible just as he was sure Seren did.

“Everything is fine back here, Seren,” he assured her in response to her inquiry. For safety he allowed the distance between them to increase as their speed increased traversing the plains but had no problem keeping pace with her.

He stopped near her Gian and secured the Astral; shutting down the repulsors and lowering it to rest on the soft, moist ground.

He made his exit and walked over to where she was waiting getting an idea where they would be storing the canister.

“If you will make sure all the doorways are open, I can move it without any assistance,” he volunteered. It would actually be easier than lifting it out of the sink hole.

Ho opened the hatch on the Astral revealing the canister now encased in a foam cocoon. Wondering idly what might be in the area that would be interested in someone using the force, he opened himself up to the force and mentally wrapped it around the entire unit lifting it slowly. When it was about chest level, he began walking toward the doorway, pulling the canister along in tow. Reaching Seren’s containment room, he lowered it to the floor and released the force. He walked around it, giving it one final integrity check before they sealed it inside.

“Looks good, Seren. We can lock it down until you can arrange transport.”

He stepped out of her way so she could perform her own inspection if she wished and to allow her to close and seal the container room’s door.

“Let’s take another look at this,” he suggested taking the holorecorder he had removed from his biohazard suit. “In this darker room, we may be able to see the markings better than we could out in the sunlight.

Ian activated the recording of the canister, adjusting the image to correct for the waters refraction and brightening the image as well as altering the contrast to improve the image.

“That’s definitely old. I suppose we could look up exactly what the warning image represents but I don’t know that it’s terribly important to us at this point. I’m more curious about the legend marking along the bottom. Do you recognize the print? Could it be old Gossom or Commerce Guild script?

[member="Ian Milàn"]

Seren had made sure all doors where open for Ian to move the canister. She maintained her distance as he levitated the canister through the back of her home, and into the isolation chamber. Her curiosity growing greater now they had the canister in a safer environment and the water of Felucia no longer in danger for now. "I will contact my father immediately", she said about to leave the chamber, however Ian stopped. His curiosity as avid as her own.

She moved back as Ian took another reading on his holorecorder, as he held to read the scan she moved to see as well. The markings are old and mostly faded or worn from age, but she recognised part of it.

"By the looks of these colours, the blue and green here", she pointed to the markings, "Look like part of the old Commerce Guild symbol, the other marking I am not sure but appears to be Gossam. Which would make sense consider". She moved away in thought. "My father will be able to tell us more".

"I am going to contact him now", she said moving to the door. "Ian there is not much we can do until he arrives, apart from securing the canister. please come and make yourself comfortable in my sitting room until then". Seren walked back along a small hall to her open plan sitting room and kitchen. "However, if you need to leave I understand, I believe you have a meeting to attend. Unless you can postpone it, after all we have not collected your samples you came for yet".

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian followed her into the sitting room and explained, “Actually, my meeting is in the morning at 10:00 at the river crossing ten miles north of town. Perhaps you could give me directions how best to reach it.”

He glanced at the quickly darkening sky outside and thought of trying to retrace their course in the dark. “I don’t want to impose, but, could I park the Astral on the edge of your property for the night. It’s well equipped for me to overnight in the field for days at a time so I’ll be quite comfortable in it tonight. I’d just rather not try to pilot through this area in the dark if I can avoid it.”

Ian was thoughtful for a moment and asked, “Seren, have you had encounters with the Jungle Felucians?”

[member="Ian Milàn"]

“I can give directions of course, the terrain in that direction is not as adventurous to travel through”, she smiled.

“Ian I can’t allow you to sleep in your Astral on the edge of my property, for many reasons. Firstly, come the morning I would awake to find little remaining of you as there are creatures that hunt around these parts of a night. Big ones. I have a shield that protects my home of a night so we will be safe. If you wish to sleep in your ship then leave it near my house. But, my second reason for not allowing this is that you have done much for me today and it would be ill mannered of me not to offer shelter in my home, but the choice is yours of course”. She regarded him hoping he would accept her invitation to remain and dine with her, after all it would be nice to have some company for a change, and such handsome company at that.

Leaning on the back of her sofa, she considered his finally question.

“I have yes, I know where they are located”, she answered his inquiry. “I also know where to find the vine for the root you wish to collect a sample of, let me return the favour you have done me today and I will help you retrieve it”.

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian thought about it for a minute and added regarding his meeting the next morning, “I was fortunate enough to meet an adolescent Felucian earlier today. He agreed to take me to meet his uncle the Shaman in the morning. I was to meet him at that bridge at 10:00. Uncle was the best translation I could determine for the term he used to describe their relationship; it could be entirely wrong.”

Ian made a strongly gutteral vocalization that sounded something akin to stubborn roots being pulled out of the ground followed by the sound of a dozen wuli nuts being cracked and finalized by the oddest chirp Seren had probably ever heard – or maybe not, she was after all from here. He finished his mimicry by explaining with a grin, “That’s what he called himself. Know him?”

“It should be an interesting morning. Would you care to come along?” Ian didn’t know if she had opportunities to meet the Shaman but as a Botanist should find it an enlightening experience.

Ian listened as she explained why he shouldn’t camp out way from her house. His Astral was actually equipped for overnight stays in dangerous environments and had its own shield generator; however, her offer hinted at something the Astral couldn’t provide – conversation.

“If you’re sure it won’t inconvenience you, Seren, I’d be happy to accept your offer. If it’s OK, I’ll go move the Astral closer in and get cleaned up and changed into something that doesn’t smell so swampy. I even think I have a bottle of wine that I can contribute to the evening.”

[member="Ian Milàn"]

Her face twisted in surprise as Ian began to vocalise the language of the Felucian. Watching him with increasing intrigue, as his effort was near perfect. Although Seren has no knowledge of the language structure and can not speak it, she has heard it many times. She smiled at his jest, before laughing, "No I can't say I have the pleasure of meeting the man, and I would love to join you it is an opportunity I simply could not resist". she laughed more.

Seren is very pleased he has decided to accept her invitation, "No inconvenience at all, it will be nice to have someone around to talk to, well discounting the plants in the green house, but they don't talk back".

She moved toward her bedroom, "Let me show you where everything is", she said indicating for him to follow.

"This is my room, you will sleep here, I will make a bed for myself on the sofa. Through here is the shower, please make yourself at home and use what you need". She showed him where to find a fresh towel and other conveniences before returning to her room. "Secure your Astral and freshen up, and while you are doing that, I will contact my father". Seren approached her door to leave him to his bath. However she added, "Oh and don't forget the wine", she smiled. After she would send her message and Ian had completed is refreshing, Seren will do the same and wash away the grime of the sinkhole water.

She entered her small office located toward the back of the house. Immediately she sat and contacted her father, in no time he appeared on screen and smiled, "How is my lovely daughter?, and why have you not come to see me?".

"Hello father, I am sorry I have been busy collecting samples for my research of water plants", before he could interrupt however, "Father there is something I need to tell you. Today .. I, we that is, Ian and I, discovered a biotoxin canister at the bottom of a sink hole, the water of which feeds into the villages to the far north and there is underground links to the south that service the water farms. But the markings on it, and the design of the canister it is very old and possibly originated from the Commerce Guild. Ian and I have retrieved it and it is safely contained in my isolating chamber. Can you send a team to come get it?, however I was going to ask you to dispose of it however, I want to find out where such a thing has come from and who put it there, and more importantly, what their intentions where. Either way I want to investigate it". She looked at her father with intent, her face stern and serious.

Her father's face changed dramatically with each word Seren spoke. And when she had finished, he sat thinking and to Seren she could have sworn his face paled. "Father?". She questioned, as she had never seen this of him ever.

"This is distressing indeed. I will arrange for a team to come to you first thing in the morning. I will start investigations immediately, leave it with me". was all he had said.

"Father I would like to be involved in the investigations, I want charges laid to the offenders regardless of intent at the very least it is negligent and if more.. then".

"No Serendipity I will handle it. I shall send your regards to your mother shall I?, good night". with that the screen when blank, and Seren sat back in total dismay. Her father had never spoken to her this way, or looked so .. different. For now, she put it down to his concern over the situation and he never asked her who Ian was. Normally that would have been his first question.

Seren left her office and went to the kitchen to see about dinner, her mind racing about her father.

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian followed Seren on her quick tour of her home. He was relieved that she hadn’t said they would share her bed like many of the women on Corellia might have; but, he was reluctant to put her out of her bedroom.

“I would really feel bad putting you out of your bed, Seren. May I have the sofa instead of you having to sleep there? Or, let’s at least flip a coin to see who gets the sofa.”

He went out and moved the Astral up near the corner of the house at the side. He looked though his clothes available pick out something suitable and grabbed his kit. He hurried back inside and took a quick shower and gave himself a shave. A quick glance in the mirror confirmed he had done all he could to make himself presentable for the evening.

He could tell something was wrong when he opened the bathroom door. Not that it was a magical barrier, but, his awareness was reaching out then rather than being confined by the business of cleaning up. Seren’s link to the force revealed her emotions and even someone as minimally trained as Ian could tell she was unhappy and mad and confused.

He followed the sounds of her preparing dinner into the kitchen and leaned against the counter next to where she was working. “I really didn’t use all the hot water,” he teased catching her eyes and giving her a reassuring smile. Unknown to him, he was also reinforcing his support of her through the force – soothing, reassuring, relaxing – it was an involuntary outflowing of his naturally empathic nature.

Seeing that he had won a smile and had her attention, he asked softly, “What’s wrong, Seren?

[member="Ian Milàn"]

She flashed a smile at him as she continued chopping some green herbs collected from her hot house. His presence near her sent a wave of calm through her and almost immediately she felt more at ease, this is a strange thing but one she liked greatly. "You look nice", she said by way of compliment at his appearance all fresh and clean shaven. She liked him, with each minute in his company he appealed to her sense of care.

Seren turned away as he asked the next question, only to grab a kitchen towel to wipe her hands. "I contacted my father regarding the canister. He is going to send a team to come for it in the morning", she began. Her concern over her father is personal to a point, her concerns for his behave, how would she explain that?

She sighed a little, "Maybe I am over reacting, I don't know .. he seemed odd about it. Cut me off .. he has never done that before". Little did Seren know but after their conversation had ended, her father immediately left the house without inform her mother and vanished into the night. Although he had arranged retrieval of the canister, he had also arrange for more.

"I need a shower, would you mind finishing these herbs and vegetables for me please? I will be back very soon". She left Ian to deal with the dinner for the moment and headed for her room. "Oh we can flip a coin if you like, honestly I don't mind sleeping on the sofa" she said at the door way to her room. Her eyes looked over him briefly she doubted he would notice from that distance, but yes she liked him.

After adjusting the water to her liking, Seren peeled off the grimy clothes and entered the water. Allowing the warmth to run over her body for a moment to wash away the worrying thoughts of her mind. After washing her body and hair she reluctantly left to dry and entered her bed room and walked to her cupboards. Flicking through the hanging clothes she was unable to decide on her choice. She puzzled at herself, never had she do this before today, she normally just grabs whatever is convenient without thought.

She laughed internally at herself, as she dressed in the undergarments and brushed her wet long hair. As if he would like me. However, Seren unwittingly chose a simple white dress which she very rarely wears.

Slipping on her soft cream shoes she came back to the kitchen to finish off cooking the dinner.

Ian had no idea what to make of Serenity’s father’s reaction to her call, but, her obvious concern and confusion caused him to worry about what it could mean. His thoughts along those lines were interrupted when she announced that she was going to shower. Despite his best intentions, he couldn’t avoid thinking about her in the shower. The memory of her standing so close to him in her wet underclothes earlier that day certainly didn’t help his imagination regarding her under the running water of her shower.

He shook his head as if that might clear the images from his mind and concentrated on preparing the vegetables as she asked. Even then he couldn’t fully concentrate and ended up with some rather exaggerated platings.

Ian’s empathy made becoming intimate with a woman almost impossible for him. He had an aversion to emotional attachments because of his parents’ history, but, contradictorily, he longed for a closeness that involved a physical aspect. He actually hungered at times for a soft touch. His problem was the reaction of the women when they realized he was inexperienced and socially awkward from being raised on Mustafar. Whether they displayed any reaction outwardly, his empathy picked up on their emotions and Ian would invariably be hurt by their curious amusement or worse, pity. His father always told him he was too thin-skinned for his own good. Ian was sure he was correct, but, knowing it didn’t make it any more avoidable in this case. So far, Ian had only sensed a curiosity from Seren – a good curiosity.

He found a cork puller and opened the bottle of wine, letting it breathe a few minutes before he poured two glasses.

When Seren returned to the kitchen Ian was stunned by how beautiful she was and the simple elegance of her chosen dress.

He picked up a wine glass and carried to her saying softly as she took it, “I think I’ve just found the most beautiful flower in the jungle.” From the look in his eyes, there could be no doubt he was speaking from his heart of her.

[member="Ian Milàn"]

She smiled as she took the glass, however her eyes fixed on Ian’s as he spoke words she did not expect. For the moment, she could not move or speak as soft words and feelings entered her being. The truth is, Seren is equally as awkward as he having remained isolated out here in the jungle, she has a far better repour with plants then people, not because she does not like them, more because her field of study requires much time away from social arenas.

“Thank you Ian that is a very nice thing for you to say”, she took a sip of her wine to help aid her courage and subdue a growing warmth which would flush her cheeks. However, a turmoil of emotions began to churl within her, one of which is the joy that he might actually like her after all. Even though they have not spent much time together, and that time taken up with the importance of the canister, she had not failed to notice him as a man, and an attractive one at that.

Seren raised her glass, “To Vines and shamans, to jungles and forests and to the joy of receiving an unexpected gift”, she said by way of a toast, the last part of it spoken directly of him. However, she did not wait for a reply but moved to the kitchen to complete the meal. She noticed the plating of the vegetables and showed her surprise on her face as she looked back to him. “You did this?”, she smiled, “It will actually be a shame to eat it, and it looks amazing”.

Her talents in the kitchen are practical and provides the basic of fare since she only has herself to fend for. However, Seren began to prepare the meat for the meal. Also she moved to the control panel on the kitchen wall and pushed the shield generator button. The usual clunk and whirl could be heard just outside the kitchen window as the shield came to life shedding its pale blue protection around the house and Ian’s Astral.

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian looked at the vegetables as if for the first time and was embarrassed to recall what he’d been thinking about while he was preparing them. “It was something my mother taught me. When we lived on Mustafar we didn’t have much variation in what was available to eat so she tried to make things more interesting by different presentations. There wasn’t much she could to change the flavors thought. Bellassan peppers tasted the same whether they looked like flowers or butterflies.”

Thinking of his mother generally made Ian sad and he was determined not to allow those thoughts spoil his evening with Seren. He sipped at his wine and watched as she turned on the shield generator. He wondered what it must be like having to live inside one of those each night. He stepped to the window and looked out; wondering what was lurking out there. He had the impression that, with the exception of the few force predators that prowled Felucia, most of the life on the world responded well to the light side of the force. He certainly hoped he would find that to be the case when he met the shaman.

He returned to where Seren was preparing their meal and asked, “Is there anything I can do to help?”

[member="Ian Milàn"]

She sprinkled some seasoning over the meat as it seared in the pan, cause the meat to retain it's juices and tenderness. The meal was soon prepared and plated for the two of them. Seren smiled as Ian made mention of his life on Mustafar and listened with growing interest. Such differences between the two planets and no doubt influenced both of them in differing ways. She is most interested in traveling to his home planet at some point, even if Ian does not offer an invitation, such places peak her curiosity.

"The meat is done", she declared and moved with the plates to the small table by the open window and placed them in the center for them to share. "Please come and eat", she said turning to face him and pulling out his chair, with an ironic smile.

"You must tell me of life on Mustafar. Are your parents still there?". she asked as she took her own seat.

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian sat down and wondered what kind of meat she had prepared for them. It didn’t look like nerf or endorian chicken, his two mainstays on Corellia. He followed her lead and helped himself to a serving of everything as he thought how to describe Mustafar for her.

“How can I begin to describe Mustafar? It’s about as different from Felucia as you can possibly imagine. I was born there, so, I thought it was a grand place until I left and saw the mountains, forests and oceans of Corellia. And since I’ve been working for Corellian Pharmatech, I’ve been visiting worlds of such beauty I have to wonder from time to time why humans would ever even consider living on Mustafar.”

“I’m afraid a botanist would be at a loss. I can’t recall seeing a single plant of any kind growing there. If you have a love for or a need for exotic metals that come out of the earth in a nearly refined state though, Mustafar is the place for you. That’s why my parents were there. My father was a metallurgical engineer in charge of the Corellian mining operations contracted with the Mustafarians and my mother was a geologist. They were exactly where they wanted to be professionally. Then I came along and upset the apple cart.”

He paused and took another sip of his wine, a sad shadow clouding his eyes as he tried to explain what happened to their happy family. “They saw that I was force sensitive when I was very young. The jedi wanted to take me to one of their enclaves for training but I didn’t want to leave them and my mother didn’t want me to go either. The jedi compromised and assigned a knight to our small community – in theory to serve the people but in reality, he was there to train me.”

“To jump ahead to the end of that story, my mother divorced my father and left with the jedi knight. They are roaming around the galaxy wherever jedi go – I really have no idea where she is now.”

“In my mid-teens, a couple of my Mustafarian friends and I began taking land speeders out exploring. My favorite area became the smoking forest and the old jedi ruins. I met some of the Blackguard and they began telling me their story and offering to let me see their prized possession, the sith holocron. They were trying to recruit me into their order. When my father found out he decided it was time for us to leave. He arranged a transfer to the home office on Corellia and we moved.”

“I attended the University in Coronet City. Studying was a refuge from the physical and cultural shock I experienced on Corellia. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and thought it must be the most beautiful place in the galaxy… it was just… there were so many humans. Millions of people – I had no idea how to cope with them at first. By the time I graduated, I was fitting in nicely, but, it was a rough transition.”

That sad look returned to his eyes as he continued, “During my third year, my father died. The doctors said it was complications from the toxins he was exposed to for so long on Mustafar. I think he just never got over losing my mother.”

“He left me financially secure – not rich by any means but with enough of an income to manage nicely and our apartment to live in.”

He raised his eyes giving her a smile that never quite banished the shadows and said, “Now I get to travel the galaxy, exploring worlds looking for the next wonder drug. And I get to meet beautiful botanists, hidden away in their secret jungle labs.”

He chuckled at the hint of a blush on her cheeks and apologized, “I’m sorry. Wine makes me overly chatty sometimes. What is this meat? It’s delicious!”

[member="Ian Milàn"]

She listened with interest with each of his words as he spoke about his family. A sad story which clearly has influenced Ian in many ways. Seren took a bite of her food to hide a blush at his compliment of her not used to such things. She looked out the window across the darkening night and through the shimmering haze of the shield.

"The meat is nothing special, bantha meat. Felucia imports a lot of it produce as we don't have much local meats available really, I just added a sauce to give more flavour", she looked back into his face now and smiled as she indicated out the window. Wandering around the house on the other side of the shield is a large Acklay, not on the hunt for them but passing. It is not a common sight for Seren and these parts but tonight they are lucky to see it. Seren does not hold fear of such creature, at least not in a safe environment, but rather marvels at them and how they interact with their environments.

She lifted the glass of wine and siped to enhance the meal. "I have never been to Corellia either, I have lived a sheltered life it seems, I must remedy that", she added, "My parents have always said I need to get out more. It might be time to do so".

[member="Serendipity"]

Ian cut another bite of the meat as she explained it to be bantha. “Bantha,” he said mostly to himself as if to memorize the name,

“I know it’s available on Corellia. I guess our eating habits were formed by the years on Mustafar where variety was scant as almost everything edible for humans had to be imported. I’ll have to remember it when I get home.”

Ian turned to watch the acklay stalking by when Seren motioned for him to look.

“Wow! We don’t have those strolling by the apartment in Coronet City.” Ian wondered what the massive beast would do if it weren’t for the shield and decided he would prefer not to think about it. “Do you see many other of the large indigenous animals?” Ian knew the night was the time predators moved about hunting and wondered what a watchful eye could see overnight here.

“I had only lived two places before I got my current job. I’ve been fortunate since then to be able to travel extensively. I do recommend it if you have the opportunity. There’s so much out there to see.”

Ian sipped at his wine and offered, “Of course, if you get to Corellia, you are more than welcome to stay at my apartment. I actually have two bedrooms and having company would be a pleasant change.”

Ian didn’t regret the invitation but was somewhat shocked at himself for offering as assiduously as he had avoided having any of the young women he dated visit him there. He gave a mental shrug and chalked it up to returning host courtesy after the kindness she had shown him. But there was more to the invitation than he was willing to admit as he realized when he added…

“Corellia has lots of beautiful features… snow capped mountains, waterfalls, beaches and islands to name a few of my favorite. I’d love to show you the sights if you ever find your way there.”

Had Ian ever seen eyes that sparkled like hers?

[member="Ian Milàn"]

"They come by the house from time to time, and so do other creatures. The shield holds and they do not approach, but they are a sight aren't they? it is like going to a zoo, but we are the ones view them from inside a cage", she smiled. "This wine is very nice, I don't drink much, but I am enjoying this", if she really told the truth, it is her company that she is enjoying the most.

Seren, looked on with growing interest, as Ian spoke of Corellia, a famous planet of course and most knew of it. His speaking only reinforced her lack of knowledge outside of Felucia and a wanting for travel began to build inside of her. There is so much to see, to study out there, even though one could spend an entire lifetime in study on Felucia alone.

"You have described two places I would like to see, even though Mustafar may not have anything immediate for a botanist but I bet there is some form of life there. In a controlled environment it might be interesting to see what one could do. But there is more to beauty then pleasure to the eye, a barren landscape can be just so as well, I guess it depends on ones point of view". She took another sip of wine and began to feel a welling of warmth through her body.

"Thank you for the invitation to Corellia .. I would like to accept that invitation and one day I will come and see your home". Where it was the effects of the wine or just simply Ian's personality and physic, but Seren's eyes linger over his handsome face a little longer then prudence permitted.

Ian reflected on Mustafar, remembering…

“There is a beauty to it. Although I never saw them, there are apparently large fungi that grow in some of the caves that the Mustafarians revere. They even model some of their architecture after it. On the surface, the world is constantly changing; being torn apart by the opposing gravitation of two nearby gas giants, cracking the world and allowing the volcanism to run rampant.”

“It wasn’t always like that. It was once a world of beauty and greens and blues like many others. Apparently a titanic force battle changed the orbits of the gas giants causing them to come too near Mustafar and causing the damage.”

Ian shrugged, “Of course that was millennia ago.”

Ian had finished his meal but continued to sip at his wine.

“Perhaps when we are done, we can take some cushions from your couch and go out and sit atop my Astral and see what parades by outside your shield.”
