Ancient submissions - How can we improve them?

I have come across several submissions that in the past years do not really flesh out the creations well enough to be entirely understandable. My question though is if the people responsible for the submission are no longer around - how can we make the submissions better? How we give them more detail so that they are better explained? I know that writers can request to change or edit their own submissions, but what about these were the writers have long moved on?

You can make a new submission and upgrade/tweak things but it be of the same thing.

In the template where it says primary source: you link the old submission.
